The green flame was the zinc plating burning off. I thought it was weird that you zinc plated the parts in contact with heat.
@king_ofdogeii268 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, that does seem weird. I would plate the high heat parts in nickel instead.

Hi. Nice video and perfect restoration. Only one mistake. The loading with the gas-tank works like that: Turn the complete burner-unit app. 5 turns out of the cartridge holder. Put a gas-cartridge in. Fix it with the adjustable bottom THEN turn the burnerhead complete into the case so the dart penetrates the cartridge. Best regards and stay healthy !

Beautiful job BUT... zinc plating for burners is not very wise. The green color of the flame will indicate it is giving of highly toxic fumes...nikkel is the plating of choice here.

Another great restore. The green flame was likely the Zinc. Zinc will create a yellow colour in the flame, combined with the blue of the gas flame would create green. It will eventually burn off. I noticed a few others let you know that too lol. Zinc plating the burner was a novel idea, but it will burn off pretty quickly. Keep it in the open air until it burns off I understand why you did it. On paper it sort of makes sense to protect the metal. 🙂.

You didn’t put the locking pin in the right hole. You put it in next to the adjustment screw but it is supposed to hole the brass fittings in on the bottom

There are two locking pins, one to keep the seal on the bottom in place, and one on top to keep you from unscrewing the adjustment needle out all the way. I only showed the top one.

Not surprised the gas canister part had you nervous. Although, if memory serves me correct, insert the gas canister first, then screw the top into place. As a child in the 1970's I witnessed a camping gas canister set fire to a caravan, my late parents helped get the drunken fool out okay, but sadly his dog died. My mother refused point blank to ever use gas stoves again when we were camping, and she went back to her Primus Stove, which I still have. Priming it can be a bit temperamental, but it still works really well. Great restoration, though. As much as those early gas stoves were a bit nerve-wracking, they deserve their place in history and preservation. 😊
@TheMangeGrain4 ай бұрын
LOL ! I had the exact same canister insertion technique, usually loosing half of the gas until I could lock the f***ing canister, until I figured out you can unscrew the burner.

green flame is indicative of a copper material burning ... not sure but i think the burner was made of copper and when u zinced it that might have caused a reaction wherein some if the copper was dissolved and then free to burn off when the stove was lit... not a chemist but usually green flame means copper

According to google Zinc does not have a color when burning. Some say its a light blue flame. BUT I might have some Zinc and other chemicals mixed in the head that did not fully evaporate. And during the test it got hot enough to burn that beautiful color.

Did the acid bath cause the pitting of that top part? It looked like it was reacting really strongly with the acid... Nice restoration overall though!
@AJRestoration2 жыл бұрын
The pitting was already there, But the top part is aluminum that is why it reacted the way it did. It was not exposed long enough for pitting to occur.
@fredrichardson97612 жыл бұрын
@@AJRestoration Thank you for the explanation! I think those pits were filled with aluminum oxide and it was hard to see before you cleaned them up - and yeah the pitting is all on one side - it's as if the burner had been lying on one side in damp soil for a long time. Great restoration BTW ;)

The green typically is either chrome or copper, but the copper is usually more blue green. That green looks like chrome. Zinc should not give any color if pure, but rarely is pure. Im curious about your passivation chemicals. Would you mind sharing a bit of the labeling here? I can guess the blueing chemicals but the yellow one has me very curious. In solution chrome and also vanadium can give a yellow tint, but not that strong, so I really am at a loss as to what that is. Keep up the really interesting content. I have not seen a canister like that one before. Completely different shape and function to my experience in the USA and now here in the Philippines. So you have me curious on many fronts today...
@animeangel19832 жыл бұрын
Someone above said the green flame was produced by burning zinc oxide.
@lpconserv60742 жыл бұрын
@@animeangel1983 Yes, I see that. I have tested both Zinc Oxide and Zinc Chloride and neither give off a green flame. It is common in copper which can be seen with a lighter and a simple copper wire. But the green from copper usually has a bit more blue tint to it. But that depends on how high the temperature is.
@animeangel19832 жыл бұрын
@@lpconserv6074 It's still weird to see it burn green if there are none of the usual suspects present. Perhaps it will remain a mystery like Stonehenge or the Moai statues of Easter Island.

You must take the top off before you install the gas cylinder. When you screw the top back on it "breaks" into the cylinder to release the gas. Make sure the tap is closed. I have two of these with arms that fold up and a white cap to store.
