I am from Trinidad, a country with a strong French history dating from the 1700. My great grandmother who didn't speak very much English would call her grandchildren "cocotte." She was born in 1882 to a half French mother so I am thinking "cocotte" must be a centuries old term.

My partner and I do the "mon coeur" thing, and he calls me "ma princesse". It's cute when he translates it to English which is funny since I would never want a native English speaker to call me "princess" lol. I struggled with the "I like you" thing when we first started dating and he expressed it as "on est attiré l'un à l'autre". You should listen to Bénabar's song "Les mots d'amour", he makes a funny list of nicknames given to partners. My chérie calls me Doudou. And Chou refers to the pastry. You have variations with chouquette as well. But nicknames vary a lot depending on the couple's history and references, some of the examples you gave can sound a little macho, impolite or kinky depending on the context like cocotte or poulette.

"cocotte" can be the diminution of "cocotte-minute" who means pressure cooker. When it's use to talk about women that's mean hen. Hen is "poule" in french and "cocotte" is "poule" with a sort of cute way or at the opposite a sort of insulting way. At first it comes from the fact that women are compare to hen because they speak a lot together and stay together like "hen" so it can be an insult when men says it with a negative way. Actually "cocotte" is more use by old creepy men now because it looks a little dumb. it's very interesting to see how foreigners perceive the french terms because they don't necessarily understand the nuances.😊

2 different meanings possible: - "ça roule, ma poule" roughly means "it's ok" / "ça marche" - "ça roule, ma poule ?" means "comment ça va ?" casual and not totally unusual these days but old-fashioned as well 🙂 (and you have to be sure to be close enough to somebody to ask him "ça roule, ma poule ?" for it not to sound quite unappropriate -say it's only for close friends. But tbh it's not the most trendy locution, the way I say it, it'd be used by "old" people addressing younger people while trying to sound cool -but it eventually only sounds quite ridiculous 😝... and I don't think "ma poule" has any actual role here (that's why the locution can be used addressing a man or a woman), I guess it's more for the rhyme, as in "à plus dans le bus !" (which btw can sound quite ridiculous as well 😄)

I'm french and I never heard "mon bibou" 😆. "Ma belle" is more for friends than lovers, actually women says that to other women when they meet each other to speak with a very friendly way. "Ma chatte" is very vulgar and insulting, that's just mean "my pussy" actually we just say "mon chaton" for men and women because "ma chatte" mean completely different thing and it's very inappropriate to say that, just pervert men say it ! no one can say it without the sexual connotation. "ma crevette" is more for tiny women, because they are little or short we call them "crevette" to refer to their height or their low strength with a cute way. "je t'adore'' is also less than "I love you'' in french, best friend says "je t'adore" but not really lovers.
