Bonjour! One of the ways (in both French and German) to distinguish the difference between a boy/girlfriend and a friend (guy or girl) is by using the possessive adjective mon and ma. "Je te présente ma copine Sarah." = "This is my girlfriend Sarah." "Je te présente Sarah. C'est une copine." = "This is Sarah, a friend of mine." The same would guy for "mon copain" (my boyfriend) and "un copain."

How do you ask someone out on a date? In English 'Would you like to go out with me (to dinner, a movie, etc.)?' usually means a formal date, and of course 'Wanna hang out?' means something more exploratory toward that end.

At a small après-ski party I was rather surprised to overhear a guy spontaneously say "voulez-vous coucher avec moi ce soir" to a Frenchwoman. She got really mad and walked away. Later he came to me and said he'd heard the phrase on TV but had no idea what he meant! However, since, in your video, you said not to use it under any circumstances, what would be a good way to propose spending the night with someone, without sounding too direct or blunt?

Nice video, even if at my age this is mostly theoretical hahaha. But one thing: what is the usual wird fir "hug" if you just wanted to say "hug me" or "give me a hug? Thanks
@FrenchTrulyTV
@FrenchTrulyTV 6 жыл бұрын
The French certainly don't hug like the Americans do... the closest would be un câlin but you'd have to be quite close to someone to do that.

Okay, you may already likely know this , but I do not see any other cooments exactly like this , so I will go ahead. The last phrase, the one you said, NOT to use under any corcumstances, Were the only French words in a popular disco song of the 1970s. You wre probably not even born then, let alone living in the US. That phrase is likely the ONLY French phrase that many Americans ( at least the ones old enough ) know. it is not at all surprising that people have tried it on you. To Americans , it simply means, “ Do you want to sleep with me tonight?”

I remember that song!!! The 1974 hit “Lady Marmalade” performed by Labelle. During that fantastic era that I was fortunate enough to grow up in, all my friends, including myself kept practicing those words until we had them perfect. The only problem was that none of us ever had the nerve to say them to a girl. Many a night we would go to a club called the Diamond Disco. It was an upscale club ahead of its time. It had a huge Dance floor. So much fun meeting new people and trying to dance to every song. And yes, I even had a white Leisure Suite and drove a 1973 Camero. Thank you for the trip down memory lane.

You missed the point of why she said not to say it. She made it out to be an annoyance, a stupid pick up line that won’t work. She’s not saying it’s somehow forbidden or awful.

Un grand merci! Je me demande c'est quoi la différence entre les deux verbes "pouvoir" et "arriver." Car quelque fois je vois "arriver" être utilisé dans une phrase comme l'une dans le vidéo "je n'arrive plus à me concentrer" - tandis qu'étant un locuteur natif d'anglais mon instinct me dit d'utiliser "pouvoir." Je m'excuse si cela n'a aucun sens lol

Très bonne question! Arriver can be used as to arrive but also (here) to manage, in which case yes it can be interchangeable with pouvoir! Bien vu! :-)

I have a question - if we are telling someone we fell in love with them, why does the expression use “vous” ?- I would’ve assumed it would include “toi” because someone you love is someone you are familiar with and probably use “tu/toi” with

So, a little bit confused as someone who's a lesbian. When you say "If you're a man, you would say...", do you mean "If you are talking to a woman"?

Technically, "baiser" means "to kiss", and is sometimes used for that meaning as a verb ("baiser sa main"). It used to be used as a transitive verb to say "to kiss someone" ; however, as said in the video, today this would be understood as "to fuck someone".
