French Police Car Respnding with Loud Siren

Here is a French police car responding with a loud siren. Notice how the siren goes from not too loud to very loud. There is a setting on the siren for "Day" and "Night" or "Jour" et "Nuit." This is the French two-tone siren in Paris, France.

I think that the Hi-Lo siren is much better than the wail siren. It can be heard from longer distances and it isnt so annoying to listen to.

It's not a question of day or night, the loudness of the siren is determined by the amount of traffic. A quiet siren might be useful when there is no traffic (on en empty street) and a loud siren is useful when there are lots of people and cars or when entering an intersection as is the case here.

I'm firefighter and in our ambulance , there is a "J" and a "N" on the selective button , next to the siren press button : J = Jour (Day in french) N = Nuit (Night in french) I will take a shot to show you. One again, you have right, policemen use siren like you said. They prefer put the quit and after, the loud if car don't moving away. (And they use quiet siren during the night , like It is written in manual)

Australian police sirens are barely audible, but their cars are about twice the size. Bigger siren = smaller car.

I'm sorry to insist : at the beginning, the quiet siren has put up for night moving. Because during night, there is no traffic, or less than day, and siren doesn't awaken people. I agree with you, in practise, police drivers are accustomed to use two mode like you said : quiet siren when there is nobody, and loud one in case of traffic jam

you have right, this is an option but a lot of new emergency cars or trucks (police, firefighters and ambulances (of fire dept,of emergency medical servie, of civilian protection, of french red cross etc ...) have two sirens : one for day, one for night.
