I think it's one of those depending on how you cook it definitions, like the ingredients are the same but one is cooked in a frying pan and the other in the oven

With French toast, we soak leftover stale bread in an egg/sugar mixture and then pan fry it usually with butter, then serve with maple syrup or powdered sugar. Bread pudding is typically a baked dish that is more dense and served with cubed and smaller bits of bread
