From Ian's analysis, it seems like an extremely user friendly rifle. Unfortunately It came out a bit too late to become relevant, when the bullpup hype has already died down and most countries with bullpups are switching back to more conventional rifles (China, New Zealand, France, etc.)
@cynicalfox1903 жыл бұрын
@@quakethedoombringer from what I understand, New Zealand and France are both switching away from bull pups more for political reasons than military ones. For example New Zealand had no preference for the bullpup rifle but oddly they selected a platform after ordering the rifle in 7.62 not 5.56 so I don’t think they are changing caliber to 7.62 I wonder why they chose a rifle that was built to fire the 7.62 over one built for 5.56. Whereas Australia has recently modernised its military with the EF88 Austeyr so it’s unlikely they will move away from bullpups anytime soon. As for France most of what I’ve heard is rumours but it sounded like a lot of their selection was political and not based on who actually won the trials. China I know nothing about not even that they were looking at a new rifle.
@quakethedoombringer3 жыл бұрын
@@cynicalfox190 from what I have read, the QBZ 96 has some major issues concerning ergonomics and reliability and unlike European nations, China does not have the experience to surmount this issue, so they pick the easy way out by adopting a AR 18 platform. France definitely picked the HK 416 because of politics (HK has better lobbying power + France needs to improve relations with Germany to strengthen the EU). Not sure about New Zealand though
@cynicalfox1903 жыл бұрын
@@quakethedoombringer interesting I don’t know much about the Chinese weapons or their procurement process. And as for the kiwis because of the ANZAC connection the kiwis have generally adopted what the Australians use and the Australians updated to the EF88 (essentially an Australian modification of the AUG A3 improved for specific Australian requirements) but the kiwis held a trial instead and chose a completely seperate system that is to my knowledge exclusive to the New Zealand armed forces the LMT MARS-L I would suspect much like the Australians adopting the M1 over the Leo2 this is to closer ties to America as the LMT is a modified M4 as least as far as New Zealand is concerned. Then again both the Australia and New Zealand special forces have always used M4’s or such style platforms so maybe they wanted to standardise across their whole military as it’s fairly small and not too difficult to restandardise on a new system.

The HK416 was well proven, the VHS was used by the Iraqis in the fight against ISIS but hasn't been widely used by elite forces like the HK416. Also bullpups are on the way out, generally. New Zealand (which used the Austeyr, a licence-built AUG) switched to an AR15 platform too. But the decision to make half of their rifles so short with 10 inch barrels, especially after the fighting in Afghanistan, perplexes me
@_blento_26373 жыл бұрын
@plentyness that is very subjective opinion. I spent two years in ex YUGO wars and I would never trade anything for Serbian made Kalashnikov (M70). Whatever you do to her, it never stop shooting. And it’s not like Hungarian or Romanian AK 47 versions that, after you shoot two magazines, you lean and press the rifle against the wall in such a way that the barrel is hitting the wall, you will find yourself that the barrel can band on the side you lean on. I spoke recently with someone who spent over a year in Iraqi military, and they absolutely love VHS gun. It could not be jammed at all even in Iraqi desert conditions. Now, I did not have VHS in my hands and I can’t speak to it. It all comes down to reliability and price. HK 416 is absolutely gorgeous gun and for sure is one of the best. The same story what is better in real life goes with M53 (ex Yugo exact copy of MG42) and PKM. yes PKM is an amazing gun but we mostly fear from enemies M53 sound. 7.92x57 can easily kill you on distances up to 2000 m. The challenge with M53 besides being a bit heavier then PKM, was that once you start shooting, the enemy (Serbs) would look To identify your spot/position and then shoot at you with mortals. PKM never had that issue and that is why many people opted to go with PKM. But to choose between M53 and PKM, I would go with M53 any day of the week.
@_blento_26373 жыл бұрын
@plentyness - I agree with you on that point. But lots of those selection for 416 is coming from hundreds if not more years of experience for HK … whereas VHS company has been on market for the past 20 years or so.
