Bonjour! I absolutely adore your videos and they have been very helpful since I graduated last May :) I studied English language and writing studies and minored in French while I was in school, and would LOVE to teach English in France soon. I studied abroad in Nancy and have been dying to go back ever since. I have heard about the Teaching Assistant Program in France and was wondering if you had any advice on how to find an inexpensive apartment and teaching there in general. I have heard it can be quite difficult for a non-native speaker. Merci Beaucoup!!

Hi Jocelyn, First of all, thanks so much for your nice comment. I love that my videos are helpful to you! You know, as an undergrad, I also majored in English! I had started out with French as a minor, but once I'd completed that I just couldn't stop. What are you doing now, teaching? About the Teaching Assistant Program in France.... it's a great idea! I've actually had students who have gone on to be part of that program, and someone who is doing it now in Béziers has just written to me to see about taking French lessons. It seems like a wonderful experience. It's true that I think it's kind of hard to find an apartment to rent once you get here, and I don't think the program pays much. The people I know who have done it have all found someone to share an apartment with (a colocataire), and that makes things a lot easier. Don't worry about being a non-native speaker, as you'll be teaching English anyway. The year you would spend here would give you the extra practice you'll need to become really fluent in French (just be sure to make a lot of French friends!). For me it's not difficult being a non-native speaker, but I've been teaching French for a long time, plus my husband is French so I've been living in immersion for a long time :-) Go ahead and apply, when's the deadline? How exciting!!

I have a question about a sentence such as: When I was young, I ate squid. If you only ate squid one time do you use le passé compose in both parts. If you ate squid many times when you were young, do you use le passé compose for the first part and the imparfait for the second part?

I have a question about why faire is used differently in examples 8 and 15. Also, I once learned the past participle of vouloir as voulu and am wondering if there is ever a circumstance where passe compose would be used with vouloir. Thank you Jennifer! I love your videos!

Bonjour! Wow, I'm so sorry. Brandi, I'm just now seeing your question. In example 8, we're saying that my daughter came into the kitchen, and she gave me a big hug. Those are two actions. They both had beginnings, and they both had endings. They're not descriptive, so we have to use the passé composé. In example 15, the imperfect form of the verb faire is being used because here's what I "was doing" when the phone rang. It's describing what I was doing. Just a little trick, when you would say, in English, "I was ___-ing" or "We were __-ing", that's going to be the imperfect form of the verb. You're right about the verb vouloir. You can use it in the passé composé, but the meaning changes. In the passé composé it means "refused to..". Clara Castex what is your primary language? Even though my dad's family is cajun and there is French culture here, it still wasn't easy since I grew up with English. There are exceptions to any rule but learning the rules of grammar really did help.

+stripedsweater520 It depends on what you want to say. "Je choisissais entre une caméra et un nouveau portable, mais je voulais un nouveau piano aussi. Donc, je n'ai rien acheté" means "I was choosing between a video camera and a new cell phone, but I wanted a new piano, too. So, I didn't buy anything." You could have started out with something like "J'essayais de choisir entre...." and that would mean "I was trying to choose between..." Hope this helps :-)
