Warning signs of the instability of the global financial system abounded in the months leading up to the 2008 Lehman Brothers crash. Among these early signs were the astounding revelations about UBS, the world's largest private bank, by Stephanie Gibaud, who was employee at the bank's French division. Gibaud refused instructions given to her and other employees to delete all their company files. In doing so, she helped reveal a vast web of corruption and fraud linking UBS to a shadowy tax evasion scheme. More than 15 years later, Gibaud has endured harassment, professional ostracization, lawsuits, and threats. She joins The Chris Hedges Report to speak on her ordeal and the extent of corruption in the international banking system.

The BRICS are extricating themselves from the West's system but that still leaves the system in place and with fewer people to exploit. How can that make it better in a system that has to grow through printing and then more corruption to hide the loot. UNLESS you're saying it's going to fall/fail in its entirety!

I never use the automated things. But then i thought would i like to sit behind a pay desk all day saying the same things 500 times while handling 5000 items when you're young and beautiful and you could do something more stimulating or something better for yr future? It's mostly young people who have these jobs (in the NL that is). It's a job only suited for older or handicapped people who can't stand or walk a long time and like to have social contact and not have a brain that needs challenging. Let these youngsters do something else with their time. But to not lose the only pay desk still available i always use that one. I prefer human contact over a machine.@@bbbanks6912

I have to admit, I always use the automated checkout which is limited to 10 items. The people on the checkouts look exhausted and unhappy. I also don't want to wait with my basket for people with trolleys full of stuff. However I only buy products that I cannot get at smaller independent stores.

Unfortunately, much easier said than done. She mentions Madoff - he was backed by the biggest investment banks as well as hedge funds. Look at Harvey Weinstein - he was backed by the biggest names in Hollywood A-list actors (ex:Meryll Streep) and top directors. everyone in the industry knew or heard of his manners. PBS had a great doc in 2018 about him. the list of examples is long and yet things never change as you will witness about the FTX case and the crypto world.

As a whistleblower myself, the financial, social, mental and emotional isolation by 100% of the people around me is the biggest threat. Because scandal gets clicks and controversy sells, the only interest is from select media. However, I noted that no one was interested in helping me recover from the huge cost of speaking up and this is sociopathic. It's fine to say "this is terrible" but if it's not terrible enough for a single person to contribute a few hours of support or a few hundred dollars and the other side is willing to spend millions to defend the corrupt, then the corruption is enabled by the public at least as much as it is perpetrated by the top. Only when the average whistle-blowers life improves due to everyone chipping in a few dollars will the public deserve to save the tens of billions that it will save from knowing the truth. I'd like to see media networks coordinate gofundme campaigns and track them and follow up in the notes.

I don’t have any fortune, I do have a heart. My heart goes out to Stephanie and to Julian Assange who, I believe is now dying for having, like Stephanie, done the right thing. I hope and believe that tomorrow’s world will be built on a new and stronger base upon the pillars of truth set up by these very courageous whistleblowers. Today’s world is a vile and cruel place. Sadly, it will get more so before truth becomes victorious… for those who survive. ❤

All this is absolutely believable for me. The same thing happened to someone in my family. She refused to cooperate in something shady that the big pharmaceutical that she was working for as an executive, wanted her to. She was isolated, harassed and tied up in legal chains for decades and though she won all the court battles, despite years of delaying tactics employed by the powerful lawyers hired by the company, she hasn't been paid a pie and, on several occasions, found that her own lawyers had been bought by the other side! She had been a very young professional at her first job when this happened. She has had no other job since and today she is nearly eighty years old. All the principal individual defendants are dead and she is still trying to make the company pay her dues as ordered by the courts down the years.

Dear Stephanie. I’m so sorry for what you have to go through. Standing up against powerful and narcissistic men is one of the bravest and most dangerous actions a woman can take. It is the same whether it is a corrupt bank or a father in a custody battle; almost everyone rallies against the woman, siding with the abuser. Sadly. What you experience with the endless lawsuits, your poor dog, the breaking in - these behaviors are the same in the abusers textbook; stalking, to punish and to subdue. My heart goes out to you Stephanie. You are not alone to experience this hidden side of our society.

It is not just men that are abusers. Take a look at the queen( now dead) and her life. Margaret thatcher for another. There are plenty more, so it ain't just men. Men are abused as children, and are expected to do well in life. In marriage women expect or demand this too.

The Swiss have shown that the next Hitler will be welcome to hide his death gold and stolen artifacts in their many hidden bunkers. And the French courts seem to display a moral character that mirrors ours in the USA 🇺🇸. The people of the world should all cease showing respect to our national flags when our anthems are played, as a means of silent peaceful protest. Voting has proven to be a fruitless endeavor. Although I doubt anything will do any good.

My mom and a coworker refused to fabricate false witness statements for their employer and also suffered work related illnesses. Their case was met with a courtroom full of defense attorneys, as it was going to be a massive precedent setting case. But the judge refused to give a pretrial ruling on important issues and even allowed the insurance industry to countersue using a massive, indecipherable abstract complaint as a harassment tool, so both sides settled pretrial. A year or so later, however, a district 9 judge oddly succumbed to the same work related illnesses that many other SF judges were also at risk of. In a flash, the same court system that balked at my mom's and her co-worker's case flipped their stance 180⁰ and ruled in favor of the judge against the insurance industry.

Healthcare system under massive attack to morph into a more 'liberal' (free market baloney) system. Wish people were more aware. They protest a lot, but it's not focused enough, because they're so wary of any kind of leadership.@@marybusch6182

Most definitely. They always need a fall guy. When a whole group goes after one individual, it is called bullying. Scapegoating is so childish. They always have to find someone else to blame. However, those that scapegoat never take accountability for their behaviors and constantly have to scapegoat others, so they create a list of victims and witnesses. It is a "pattern of behavior."

Thank you, Mr. Hedges, for this powerful and insightful interview. It is a shame that this woman has had to endure all of these trials, because she upholds ethics in the field that she is in, banking. She highlighted many things that deserve more scrutiny, worldwide. As I have learned throughout my life... follow the money. That is where most of the ill-gotten gains reside, and are protected by the people that not only perpetrate the crimes, but the ones who attempt to hide the maleficence.

*"Are corporations "Above the Law" that the rest of us have been made subject too !"* , errr.... yes, they have been for decades - obviously. _The evidence is ALL AROUND US. For example British Petroleum leaked 205.8 million gallons of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico, nobody was sent to jail, nobody was paraded in the press as a criminal, money was paid and drilling continued - this is not the same justice you or I would receive if we were capable of such horrific ecocide. If the only punishment is a fine, then that means it's legal for rich people to do the crime._

The powerful have been fighting against The Enlightenment since The Enlightenment. We in the US don't typically understand for how long this tiny club has been exploiting the whole world, and it is events like this that can give us some notion of the true scale of corruption that literally controls every human life. When you ask, "Why are things the way they are?", the answer is always, "Because that's the way these people want it to be". One of the most important, and rarely mentioned facts surrounding both the global financial collapse of 2008 and the utterly corrupt response to it in 2009, is that all of it was: To first, make these people even more powerful. And second, to preserve their power despite the consequences of those actions.

Banks haven’t learn anything from their past mistakes and still involved in same crimes in hiding the looters wealth from all over the world countries. UBS is perhaps at top of such crimes. Politicians ya leaders in charge of most countries destiny being corrupt themselves not gonna do anything against criminality of corruption and money laundering businesses because that’s how they keep moving their loot overnights from one financial institution to others. When banks face dangers of failing, the government releases ample of funds to rescue them & that’s how such vicious webs of corrupt greedy bastards have succeeded in looting their own nations treasures & treasuries since decades.
