Great idea keeping the refrigerator in the pantry. I did the same when we renovated some years ago. They are so big and ugly no matter the colour. I like a very streamlined orderly kitchen which is all white, but my pantry has a combination of shelving and cupboards in a beautiful olive green. Lovely to see Tigret enjoying the warmth of inside. 🥰🐾❤

I feel such a calm joy watching you experience your uncomplicated but profoundly peaceful yet productive life. I am inspired to take a different path for my own journey! Thank you! My family tree has very French roots: my great-great grandmother came from Cannes, and further back, two ancestor brothers lead Huguenots from La Rochelle to New Rochelle, New York, USA. I visited Rouen in the 1980's with my mother. My younger brother was living there and racing 10 speed bicycles, bit not the Tour de France!! God bless!

Thank you! We don’t all know how to build I think and make mistakes. My husband is very experienced and I’ve watched him many times and learn from him. He has learned from his father and from working with local professionals on our house here in France. And you can take courses, they also offer building / DIY courses for women (at least they do in The Netherlands).

Your skillset is truly remarkable! Please do a vlog telling us about how you learnt all of this! You work with such precision! Love that you are creating a pantry as in older houses here in South Africa there were always pantries. Now we have pull out pantry cupboards in smaller spaces, but nothing beats the walk in experience.

I have zero building experience and am precise in my design and building approach but sloppy in my execution because of physical limitations after my car accident in my twenties but also because I just don’t have a very solid attention span for this kind of work… But I enjoy creating beautiful things and know Olav is behind me when a task needs physical strength that I simply don’t have. Nice watching your pantry build develop. A small part of a huge remodel but success comes with each step...think that's some Chinese proverb or something. Guessing the shelves are pine? Not sure I would get used to the refrigerator in the pantry but it probably works for your kitchen design. Long time project...frayed nerves start to develop. That's when we'd leave time to mentally recoup for a few days. Continued best of luck...it will be a beautiful home. 👍

I love the shot where behind you is the ancient stone and new stone perpendicular and both have the same tones of French limestone. Tells the story of centuries of building techniques. Good job Marloes- as a an ID designer I can say you are absolutely spot on in drawing first always.
@FrenchCountryLife9 ай бұрын
Thanks! Do you mean the wall behind me? Those are hemp blocks for insulation and they will be covered with lime render. But I love all those neutral calming tones! The render will be a similar tone!
@ShelleyScales9 ай бұрын
@@FrenchCountryLife ok! Wow fascinating - the hemp both insulates and provides a great substrate for lime wash? - you have them on the top level without mortar, on the bottom floor they have mortar, is there a difference? I’ll have to research this a bit…
@FrenchCountryLife9 ай бұрын
@@ShelleyScales yes exactly! You can't close off stone walls, they allow the house to breathe. Using hemp also has the advantage of keeping the interior climate as it is with an uninsulated house, which means: super cool in the summer, even during a heat wave! Nearly any other insulation material will destroy this beautiful advantage of stone homes. But it does regulate the humidity and is a very powerful insulation for the winter too. You need to use a special mortar for them, we used it on the top floor as well but maybe you don't see it that much there. One thing though: you need to put it on a floor that's protected against humidity to prevent it from getting in the blocks. We put it on a concrete floor in the cottage and in the kitchen but that floor has an insulation and water barrier underneath. Even our architect is impressed with how nice and warm our house is in winter with only a tiny wood burner and how cool it stays in summer. No airco needed. We love it, but many architects are a little hesitant as it is much more difficult to predict insulation values (I don't know the word) and architects need to rely on numbers that they can give their clients :) But we only used our architect to apply for the building permits for us and we did everything else ourselves and with some help of very experienced artisans. Now our architect is starting to use the same materials for other projects :) Yes do look into it. It also gives a very different energy in a room, which is hard to explain. It does something to the atmosphere. All our guests of the cottage say this too. Invaluable!
@ShelleyScales8 ай бұрын
I’m totally tracking with you- the R values are not standardized with this method though like you said it’s unique. I love the idea bc it’s natural and sustainable - interesting about the low humidity atmosphere as well. Thanks so much for your detailed answer Marloes. Smart solutions!

these little villages can be dead quiet, most likely nothing like where you and I live at all...when my cat Stan was alive I walked him on a leash and waited till midnight when the traffic died down, later in his life when we would go for walks I wouldn't use the leash, he was cool, he knew exactly where we lived and we were living in a wooded area 20 minutes outside Manhattan. They're alot smarter than we give them credit for...
