Since the topic of heroic women is here, it is worth mentioning Lydia Litvyak, the most effective female pilot of World War II. She showed herself well at Stalingrad, for which she was nicknamed "The White Lily of Stalingrad". She had a total of 5-12 enemy planes shot down personally and 2-4 in a group. She died on August 1, 1943 during the Battle of Kursk.

Ah thank you for making me discover this women! It's a shame we don't talk more about these heroic women (or the Eastern Front in general).

I remember an interview with a surviving Night Witch. She was proud of the title and spoke fondly of a girl who had survived several flights out. Queens. Every last one of them. Their commander went to go find them, as they were considered traitors and defectors, since they never came home. She managed to find them all, accomplishing her goal before she passed.

It's an incredible story... Right up to their commissioner, who went looking for them all to tell their story and make sure they weren't forgotten. Thanks for your comment!

Oh my, I don't even know where to begin, I've not heard this story before I was mesmerized! The bravery of these young women is beyond me. I've only recently become familiar with sabaton and love the stories so far. I do believe we are capable of more than we know when pushed, I pray in this crazy, mixed up, and scary world we never have to find out.as always thank you for the video and thoughtful commentary

I didn't know their story either, and I spoke to people close to me who were equally stunned by the courage of these women. It's so inspiring! Thank you for your comment!

The interesting thing we were taught in school about them is that because PO-2 weren't outfitted to carry bombs those mechanisms were makeshift and didn't always work so one of the girls sometimes had to climb out ONTO THE WING and MANUALLY release the bomb. Balancing on the cloth wing with both hands busy. And we actually see in the video one of the girls drops the bomb with her hands. The other one has to pilot the plane during that time trying to keep it somehow balanced so her partner won't fall off the wing hoping she's not going to get shot while in the open

I didn't know that... The courage of these women is incredible.

Thank you so much for adding to the story that Sabaton started. I had never heard anything about the Night Witches before I heard about them from Sabaton. I guess that is not something we teach in the USA. Your additional information though was extremely informative.

Thank you, they don't teach us that in France either... It's a good thing Sabaton came along to do these heroines justice!

Excellent reaction. Two other all female regiments, the 586th Fighter Aviation Regiment and the 587th Bomber Aviation Regiment, were also created. The 586th flew Yak-1 fighters and operated inside Soviet lines, escorting VIP flights and defending important industrial sites. they soon became a mixed male and female fighter unit, partly due to a lack of pilots but also due to dissention in the regiment over their commanding officer. they were the only one of the three regiments not awarded the coveted "Guards" status. The 587th primarily flew the Petlyakov Pe-2 dive bomber and also quickly became a mixed sex unit due to personnel shortages after upgrading from the two crew Sukhoi SU-s bomber to the three crew Pe-2. They flew missions inside the Soviet Union and also in Poland and Lithuania. Interesting trivia: Marina Raskova, the driving force behind the creation of these three regiments, flew as the commanding officer of the 587th. After she was killed at Stalingrad, she was replaced by Major Valentin Markov, an experienced male combat bomber pilot. He fell in love with and married one of the navigators in the regiment, Galina Dzhunkovskaya after the war.

Thanks, I didn't know the history of the other two regiments founded by Marina Raskova. Incredible destiny! And I'd never heard of mixed regiments, it must have been a unique case during WW2?

Welcome to "the Sabaton Experience" - they do TRUE stories of war - not taking sides - but telling of heroism, mercy, and valor. If you liked this one, may I suggest "No Bullets Fly" (the animated story video version - like this one) - it tells the true story of a German fighter pilot who came across a **very** damaged B-17 (American 4-engine bomber). He got closer and due to the HOLES BLOWN in the bomber he could see the wounded men taking care of other wounded men. Instead of shooting it down, he felt bad for them and showed mercy - he ESCORTED them out of Germany. The German gunners on the ground saw the Bf-109 (German fighter plane) flying in formation with the B-17 and did not fire on the bomber. The story goes on to show how the two pilots met 45 years later and became good friends.
