I think what you're overlooking is that this was a different time, back in the 90s, no doors would open to you without a college degree, especially if you were a college dropout. Let's say the store burned down or there was a scandal and Will lost his job, what are his options then? Today you have plenty of doors open to you and can easily land a 60k job without needing anything but a Highschool degree. It was a much harsher time in tge 90s and Vy and Vivian were right to do this, because they know just how tough society was to young uneducated people, especially to people of color.

I'm with Will on this. One of the points of college is to help you find and prepare for the job you want in life. Will had actually found that and was actually making a good amount of money for it. Chances are he might have just gone back to selling cars after he graduated anyways. And it's not like he can't go back to college if he feels like he wants to pursue a better education.

Problem with this logic, is that if everyone in College did this, then where would we get our future doctors, teachers, scientists, etc. We would have to employ everyone from other countries which would cost more money. Education is important, its not just about preparing for a job or learning about the real world, its also about becoming a productive member of society.

Everybody keeps saying, "I agree with Will", but no one's thinking about Will's future. Remember what happened to the boss's brother at the beginning of the episode, that guy selfishly fired his own brother because he wasn't selling as much as Will. What if that happened to Will in fifteen years and he has his own big family? There's a fifty-fifty chance he won't get another job as extravagant as car salesman without a college degree. So, I believe he should not drop out of college.

I loved and hated this episode...hated because of the narrative of go to college to be successful. To be fair, Car salesman has potential to be an excellent job if you sell. Sure there are drawbacks such as working 50+ hours a week and shitty management who will do you dirty when it comes to payment. The narrative you need college for success caused the debt that our generation is in. Besides, at the rate Will was selling cars, he easily be making in the range of $150k to $200k a year. He's not throwing away his future, he's more likely to do that by dragging on through college. Selling cars was certainly better than how the show ended with Will still finishing school. While I have seen my share of people who hated it in the dealerships, Ive seen plenty of success too. Many kids from poor upbringings that weren't academically or athletically gifted, many of them went into car sales. They ended up doing well.

I kind of thought the narrative for this episode was pretty bad. It had some legit funny moments in it, it is a comedy after all, but needing to go to college to be successful? That might work for some people, but I don't think that works at all. Earlier this year, I tried going to a local college to take classes regarding computers, and it was something that I really wanted to learn to do. But, as fate would have it, I didn't get accepted, but I don't see this as the end of the world. I'm probably not alone in saying this, but I think this episode could have been so much better.

Looking back, this is definitely Harsher in Hindsight. Will found a job that plays to his strengths, was high - end, was making sweet coin, and Uncle Phil and Aunt Viv just wanted him drop it completely in favor of what? '"Finding yourself." Bullshit. I speak from experience, NO ONE goes to college to "find themselves." Will already had a handle on himself from the get - go. He just needed to smooth his rougher edges, become more refined, and Uncle Phil and Aunt Viv already did that in spades. They COULD have gone with the angle that they didn't want Will to be a quitter like Hillary, but no, they were looking to shoehorn in some greater life lesson about college life. I reiterate, bull. And. SHIT!

Um I went to college to find myself and learned so much more than I ever would have had I not gone to college. I would argue college is even more essential these days with how out of touch and ridiculous the grade school curriculum is.

@@ghariiscool So you'd rather wok for commission payments? Because that's what Will was doing. That's what being a salesmen is. Clearly, the people who said Will had a good job never worked a commission pay gig before. It's awful. You are easily exploited in this type of work. You have high quotas to reach at the end of the month and you will be working solely for the commissions at the end of the month due to your low base salary - meaning very, very long hours and weeks. Will may have been good but for how long? He sells 15 cars today and will be expected to sell them everyday which is not sustainable as the market and times change. This is why college was better for Will. He was also playing basketball. His potential was better than being a salesmen.

A lot of people in the comments are saying that Will was making the right choice. I kind of expected that when I started scrolling, given the explosion in student debt (then again, Phil and Viv were most likely paying for his college tuition, anyway). Maybe he was making the right decision. He wasn't dropping out of school so he could party and goof off. He was dropping out because he found a good paying job he liked and was good at. Then again, given that Viv and Phil were most likely paying for his college tuition, it might have best to just finish college as quickly as possible and then go into sales.

For will to be in his position, with his charisma, talents, and opportunities his life was going to be much better off being around other young bright minds. It’s exactly why uncle Phil said it’s more about learning about life and different ideas than getting a job. More about the journey if anything , sometimes it’s okay to take the long route.

I guess it's a good thing will has a rich uncle paying for his tuition so he won't be buried in student debt when he graduates with most likely no direction to go in life. If he kept this job, he could've gotten his own place within a year and become independent like he tried to do in the beginning of the season before his dumbass friend jazz got him kicked out of his apartment.

Sure, but he and Aunt Viv were both totally wrong in this instance. Something that shows like this always felt the need to preach to the audience was that "if you drop out of school, you're failing at life" and that's a horrible message to send. School isn't for everyone. But like Will said, it's not like he's flipping burgers. He had a fantastic, respectable job that has all the potential of leading to a future.

Honestly college doesn’t always get you anywhere in life. The only reason he came to live with his aunt and uncle was because he got in trouble hanging with the wrong type of crowd. When he came to Bel Air, it took him time for him to grow up and eventually he did. He may have gotten into some trouble but there were good things he did manage to do that showed the best of him. Him working at the car dealer was definitely legit, even his aunt and uncle didn’t like the idea of him throwing away something that might’ve been good for him which doesn’t mean it could’ve been just because it was good for them. He was getting paid and sometimes what you don’t expect can always be a good thing in life, they shouldn’t have called his mother after all he was all grown up too and it sucks his mom didn’t care.

Alls well until he hits a dry spell, or a recession and his checks aren’t anywhere near as high as when he’s hitting his numbers. Plus, car dealerships will not hesitate to cut costs if need be. If business is struggling, they’ll cut employees in a heartbeat. Lot’s of comments bashing on college and I think that’s unfair, especially if you’re in Will’s predicament. If Will likes selling and has a talent for it, why not keep his part time role earning money while he’s in school (money he can pocket since his uncle is covering school costs), and graduate with a Marketing degree. He now has the degree plus 4 years of experience in sales. Plus this in the 90s, where college degrees were worth much more than they are today. Dude would get snatched up by a major corporation and work for their sales/acquisitions teams. Corporate sales can pay some buku money. Prior employer that I worked had a client acquisitions team, who were responsible for negotiating deals with major companies to bring their equity comp accounts to the firm to manage. The starting pay for those guys was $250K (plus commission bonuses every quarter). Once you had your stripes, that pay was $1.5MM per year. Those guys made dumb money but it made sense because they brought in what consisted of majority revenue for the company. In order to get that role you had to have a degree (preferably in Finance), several licenses and years of experience in equity comp and sales. College educations may not be the end all be all, but they sure as hell can be used as a major addition to your resume and enhancement to your skill set overall.

Sure, a job can get you money, but without an education, once it's gone, you are left with nothing. A friend of mine studied Economics, he even became a bank director, but he had to quit because they were moving him elsewhere, so now he's driving a taxi. He got another offer, it was far from home and his son and he rejected it, but at least he has the key to a door that can appear again and the tools from his education.

The statement "college isn't for everyone" is true but there are way too many people here and it's obvious, who have never worked as a salesmen for commission sales. If they had, they would not be agreeing with Will to drop out college for this job no matter how good Will was at it. This is not a career/job you want long term. You are easily exploited and you will end up working solely for the commission pay at the end of month because your base salary is so poor. Longer hours, longer days, longer weeks, just to make up your monthly quota. Will was playing basketball in college. He could have went pro and made more money and had a better life than selling cars. That's the whole point of this episode - potential. Not your personal views on college no matter which decade you were born in.

Hmm… I graduated with a BA of History, attended a private university and accumulated less than $15k in debt. The trick is to not get over your head. Knock out your core requirements at a community college and transfer. You may be able to enter a 4-year as a junior which will drastically lower your debt. Still too much? Consider a school you can commute to to eliminate or reduce living costs. Still too much? There is plenty of free money around for scholarships. Look for them. Still too much? Get a job. Paired with commuting can greatly reduce how much you will have to borrow. Still too much? Consider joining the military. You could also look into applying to a Branch Academy and get a top tier education with no financial obligation, however you would be required to serve 8 years after graduation. My point is: there are many ways to get a college education with minimal debt. I apologize all these methods take away all the glamour of college life as depicted by popular media.

I get where both sides are coming from and don’t understand why a compromise couldn’t be reached? Will could have still worked there part time while going to school to earn a degree in business management or financing. Whichever one is the major, the other could be his minor. That way when he graduates, not only could he then work at the dealership full time, but he’s also have the education and credentials to go along w/ the experience so that he could eventually become a manager or even open his own dealership w/ some financial help from Uncle Phil. And Uncle Phil, Aunt Viv, and Vy could have covered all of Will’s education expenses (assuming they weren’t already) and taught him some of the legal components of owning a business so that Will knows what he’s doing when that time comes.
