One difference from anime and original source is that Lakan was away, not because of studying aboard but because he was sent on a military campaign by the Emperor's order and didn't tell Fengxian about his departure because the order to join the war was very sudden. It took him 3 years to finish the war to finally return to hom. When Lakan went to see Fengxian, the old lady outright shout that Fengxian died because of him while giving him a beating.

Not sure what you are saying, but the Official Light Novel translation matches the Anime. Though it just says that Lakan was sent away on a long trip. No mention of either studying aboard or military campaign by Emperor order. In the Manga, fan-translation talked about sending him on a campaign, while official-translation talked about sending him "canvassing".

Finally, a reactor who caught onto the hints. Luoman is Lakan's uncle. This makes Luoman Maomao's great uncle. My hunch is Luoman went to work for Verdigris house knowing that his great niece/nephew was going to be born. Edit: Cutting off a finger wasn't just curses, it was to show a sign that you were dedicated to someone. She believed if he saw her finger and the finger of his daughter, he would come for her. As others have mentioned during the stream, Lakan was told she is dead, hence why he never came looking for her. 2nd edit: The genius of this author is amazing. They did an amazing job making us hate Lakan, only to make us realize we misunderstood him. Lakan isn't evil, he's just weird. He longs for Maomao because he believes she's all that's left of the woman he loved, and longs to be with Maomao as a father and child. I won't go into further detail as I believe everything else will be explained next week.

@@zam023 In the book, Lakan was told she was dead. This is why he didn't bother to look. This is also why Lakan doesn't question Maomao being raised by Luoman. And since Lakan has great faith in Luoman, he understood that Maomao was in good care with him. There's more details I want to add, but I expect them to be revealed next week, so I'll hush up now.

@@zam023 Although it wasn't said in the anime, compared to the source material, and with the framing of the scene, I think it was pretty much implied that she "died". With emotions running high during that scene with the old lady, there was no shot he would be able to think rationally of the possibility that she might still have been alive, let alone still being taken care of at the brothel. And you can be sure that the old lady wasn't gonna tell him of that fact as well, seeing as she hates Lakan for supposedly "abandoning" Fengxian. It is quite brilliant how we've spent a good majority of this cour hating Lakan, only to find out that he was also just a victim of mere unfortunate circumstances. I know this show is no Frieren, but this deserves every bit of praise it can manage to muster as well.

Something that was talked about earlier in the series is that there is no way for a sex worker to get accidentally pregnant due to all the medications they take. So regardless of whether Lakan meant to impregnate Fengxian or not the only way she could have gotten pregnant was if she CHOSE not to take her medication, which she obviously did. Fengxian thought she would get pregnant, her deal would fall through and Lakan would be able to take her away from the brothel at a heavily reduced cost due to her carrying his child. Unfortunately for the both of them he was pulled away for too long and Maomao's mother had no choice but to stay at the brothel and sleep with possibly diseased lower class customers. In the end, they were both reckless and Maomao's mother paid the price.

Yeah, in this situation both of them were at fault. Also, it was the whole Pregnancy thing of Prostitutes that was bothering me when I read the Manga, which is why I always doubted whether Lakan was really bad or not, as the Manga (and the Anime) portrayed. I mean, while this is a fictional setting, but even in real life, prostitutes actively avoid getting pregnant either by use of contraceptives or protection or going for abortion. As getting pregnant is really bad for both their business and personal life. So, it always felt odd that the value of a Courtesan depended on whether they gave birth or not, if there is no way to stop a pregnancy to occur. But if there a way, then the whole pregnancy point would be a invalid as the Courtesan could use them to avoid getting/staying pregnant. Meaning unless the Courtesan wished, there is no way they would get/stay pregnant.

Gonna add a small part, that I think Lakan has very little, if not zero concept of love, since his upbringing and condition made it seem like he couldn't read and respond in kind to his own family. The tragic part, is that he only realises that love after he's lost it, not because he was reckless and uncaring, but because he was, and likely still is, emotionally immature to an extreme degree.

@@jimtamim1708 there are different degrees. Faces are distorted in my memory but I can see them in the moment. The novel has a bit more time to explain it. He can see a nose, a mouth, but they don't make up a face for him. His brain doesn't proceed the concept of a face. All the pieces just don't come together. In my case it's more I don't know who I'm looking at. I can tell it's a face but I don't know whose. I remember people by other traits. Like clothes, hair, tattoos. My father shaved and I had no clue who he was. I don't know who any of my coworkers are. I can't picture my mother's face. Or my best friend or anyone really. So let's say a customer asks me for something. If they move after asking me for it I don't know who to give it to. Unless they have something really distinctive about their appearance I have no way of knowing. It's hereditary in my case. My mother has it too. I suspect that a few other relatives might also have it but I'm not sure.

They or should I say, Maomao mom planned the bought out but it didn't work because Lakan was sent to war, something he have no control of. When he return, it's too late. He couldn't do anything for Maomao and her mom because the old lady told him she's dead while actively hiding Maomao from him. Also, what did he ruin exactly, he smelled that there something going on and drop hints for Jinshi to resolve it himself, classic Maomai style. He even help his daughter to get through the guard. Without Lakan, Maomao wouldn't have found out the assasination scheme or saving Jinshi. As you can see in this ep, he actively try to make up to Maomao for his past mistake.

The game within a game was brilliant. She knew she couldn't beat him at chess, so she introduced the "poison" knowing he would not let her die and thus start throwing matches. She knew he couldn't handle strong alcohol and used that to beat him in a way he didn't see coming. In the end, she beat him through psychology.

There's an important detail here if you know Chinese The balsam's Chinese is 鳳仙, and its pronunciation is fengxian. (You can listen carefully.) The woodsorrel's nickname is cat's foot. Cat's Chinese is 貓, its pronunciation is mao. This is how FengXian name her daughter, and it is also the same reason they draw cat ear on MaoMao's head.

The show (and the manga) do a great job of making you believe Lakan is an irredeemable character only to turn it on it's head with a tragic set of circumstances. His condition that makes it difficult for him to connect with people leads to a blind spot in putting together what her letter was implying when she informed him that her buyout deal had collapsed. As a result Fengxian and the Verdigris House believe that he has abandoned her after getting her pregnant. The finish of the story coming next week. Can't wait.

Fengxian's price fell off because she was pregnant, that's why she wasn't bought out by someone else. I guess she was hoping Lankan to buy her out, but she didn't expect Lankan didn't get that she was pregnant in her letter (she should have told him directly before he went abroad). Then Fengxian had no choice to sleep with other men because she's no longer highly ranked. That's how she got her disease. Fengxian and everyone else thought Lankan abandoned her because he didn't come back for 3 years. That's why she sent him the finger to curse him. In previous episode, we saw Fengxian was trying to stab Maomao, but the truth is she wanted to cut Maomao baby's finger to avoid her being in this profession, but she couldn't do it. Fortunately, Maomao was adopted by Lankan's uncle and learned medicine, so she doesn't have to work in the Verdigis House like her mother.

Lakan's absence lasting for over 3 years is something that doesn't get fleshed out until volumes 9-11 of the light novels (the current anime season corresponds to volumes 1-2). Basically, a full scale civil war broke out in the western province. That also the event that led to Consort Gyoukyou's family rising to prominence

Also should be noted that the later books make clear (in different context) that the western capital, where he was posted, was a 2 week journey for post riders. Messages and news just took time to get places, even on the best conditions, in that time/place. From a couple of things that will be apparent in the season of the anime (if it does follow volumes 2 & 3 of the light novels), the technology level is about 17th century

"Finger cutting" is a custom that originated in Yoshiwara, where prostitutes cut off their little fingers and present them to their customers as a token of their deep love for them. Something like a vow to love only you... Of course, it doesn't exist in modern Japanese culture. Fengxian The people who Maomao cherishes, Loumen, old lady, Meimei, Juka, Pairin, perhaps her mother Fengxian need closure and this her way of perhaps not healing but closure so all of them can move forward. Lakan was self aware of his issues that his Uncle Loumen tried to help him. But in his arrogance he did not try to really understand those around him. His failure to connect either Fengxian or understand her communications with him. After THREE years he finally understood. He was not malicious just lazy and neglectful - abandoning Fengxian dooming her to her shameful state and disease. Maomao understands it was not all his fault so she does not hate him but also has no affection for him. Recall her comment she lost ability for love in Fengxian womb.

Just to let you know, the finger severing curse had nothing to do with the buy out deal, the pregnancy was what dealt with the buy out. The finger severing curse was directed at Lakan due to his perceived abandonment of her which basically ruined her life, hence why the fingers were sent to Lakan and not whoever her original buyer was.

Fengxian had a plan, due to the buyout Lakan cant pay for her (by that time they developed feelings). So when she won the game her wish was to make her pregnant to avoid the buyout. So fengxian thought when she got pregnant, her value will be lower so that Lakan can buy her out.

Both Lakan and FengXian have exceptionally poor social skills. Both highly intellectual but both saw the world as a chess board, they fell in love with the others intellect. He didn't notice her play on the board, and she executed the play without knowing what had happened to Luomen. If Lakan hadnt been sent off, her play would have succeeded, he would have noticed her move eventually and they both would have won, but because of circumstances beyond both of their control, they both lost. Also Lakans family didnt' forward any of the letters to him. I'm willing to bet Lakan would have returned sooner if he was forwarded those letters.

I'm sure the anime onlys were so confused why we liked him so much. His entire life is just a tragedy. Like, the old greek tragedies Aristotle wrote about. His love has an incurable terminal disease, his daughter hates him, and those two facts will never change. He made himself out to be the bad guy out of guilt for what happened and an inability to understand human emotions. Prosopagnosia is more common if you have autism which he very well might have. He seems to be coded that way.

tbh, i feel very complicated after i watched this episode. i still think all of this is lakan's fault, that he literally destroy someone else life to the absolute bottom. but on the other hand, i also feel bad for him to unknowingly made the biggest mistake of his life, even if its out of his control.so yeah... its complicated.

He really didn't know because grandmother hides Fengxian, who was already bedridden. She also barred him from seeing Maomao whenever he went to Verdigis House. He didn't know that Fengxian was sick until the next episode when Maomao allows him to see Fengxian. I kinda blame the grandmother for this even though I know she just wants to protect Fengxian and Maomao from the "bad" Lakan.

He didn't know she was still alive. Remember the grandma said "she's gone". That means they either kicked her out to be a streetwalker or a violent customer just killed her which was common for the lower ranked courtesans. The Virdigris house has been hiding her from him for the past 15 years. He tried to buy Maomao so he could have some part of her but they blamed him for what happened to the brothel and to her so refused to allow him near her. They get customers lying about being "away" all the time. They had no reason to trust him.

Fengxian acted on the assumption that Lakan knew and agreed to her plan, which was why she asked him which game they should play. The owner and other girls at the Verdigris House, all assumed Lakan was just a cheat and had abandoned her to her fate, without considering to ask why, likely because that isn't the first time it's happened in their line of work. There is a scene, we may see in the next episode, that shows Loumen, well aware of his nephew's disability and why it led to this outcome, but refusing to step in and save him from the Granny beating and berating him, exactly because he isn't fully to blame, but he also isn't wholly innocent either.
