Season 2 in 2025 hype! I never thought I'd end up loving Apothecary Diaries as much as I did when I first started. It was one of the best anime in the past year hands down. The Apothecary Diaries and Frieren: Beyond Journey's End are easily my top 2 contenders for AOTY in 2025 RN. I enjoyed both more than JJK and current SL, not to say those are bad at all, but to give perspective. I think only Vinland Saga S2 was done as well as these 2 in the 2023/2024 space and that is impressive and pleasantly surprising.

I find it such an interesting touch that Lakan sees her face, but doesn't ACTUALLY see it. His prosopagnosia doesn't just go away around Fengxian and Maomao, he still has it. As such, even if he can recognize Fengxian's face, his brain DOESN'T recognize the ways that it's changed from the syphilis. All he really sees is that it's her, and as such she's still as beautiful as he's ever known her.

When reading the novel and manga, I took that scene to mean that Lakan can see her as she is now since she has scars when he enters the room, and we're still in his perspective. Once he gets closer, they disappear, conveying that he perceives her as beautiful regardless.

Fengxian's lack of disfiguration in Lakan's view of her is a good example of a benefit of Prosopagnosia, he cannot recognise faces to begin with; but for Fengxian and Maomao, he can recognise them regardless... so that means that regardless of how horribly her face is messed up; Lakan will still see her as the beautiful woman she always was, because whether her physical face was beautiful or not was never a factor for Lakan in the first place He'd be the sort of man who'd recognise the love of his life and cherish her, even if she lost an arm, gained weight or lost one of her eyes, as those things were never a factor for Lakan

Everytime Maomao wonders about love, she always looked at her warped pinky, because as far as her experience goes, the act of love brings nothing but grieve (like Fenxian and Lakan's tragic love that causes the Verdigris house to almost collapsing, and causing Fenxian's body & mental health to detoriate drastically to the point where she'd cut her own daughter's pinky finger). But Maomao knew from other people that love can be beautiful and become a powerful source of strength too, like what she saw in Lady Fuyou and other courtesans around her. Deep deep down, she probably wish to experience a normal, wonderful love like everybody else, but she's too emotionally detached to recognize that, so she just claimed she already left behind the feeling of "love" in Fenxian's womb 😭

Even if there's a genuine love formed between a courtesan and a client, I can imagine it's hindered by the economy, social status, family's blessing, or smth like that; very few of the case ended with happily ever after. That's a part of what makes Maomao such a realist when it comes to love.

The ability to grow the pinky back must be related to the person's age when it happens. I'd speculate this is because the bones are still actively growing before puberty. As long as there is still some of the metacarpal bone leftover from the cut, the young baby can grow that part back. However, if this happened to an old man or woman, it's gone forever.

About abortion medicines/drugs whatever you want there will be several instances about it in the future season. Heck the first story would might even slid that info in. The 2nd instance of that made me laugh, a high ranking consort is pregnant and slapped the sh*t out of her lady in waiting then in the next panel in the manga jinshi said that wasnt much of a punishment and she had to be talked out of clocking her lady in waiting with a solid closed fist.

This season took my breath away. I did not think I could develop sympathy for Lakan. He was not a villain but I did think he was a deeply morally flawed. The finale exploded that view and really revealed the tragedy that many contributed towards and Lakan’s real feeling for Fengxian.

I think the only problem i had with the adaptation of this section of the material was that it didn't relay how much the old woman charged Lakan and the subsequent celebrations that occurred. It also failed to adequately express that Maomao's dance was one of joy that her mother was bought out. It was far clearer in the novel. Overall this was a very impressive adaptation and i look forward to next year.

I felt the same as you about Apothecary Diaries when it started (the anime) but I gave it a try once the dubbed episodes were posted. I was about 3 or 4 episodes in, I loved it and couldn't wait for the other dubbed episodes. I ran to google to find the manga online. I then started watching the subbed episodes because I couldn't wait for the dubbed episodes. So now I watch both. I really do prefer dubbed though, but with these simulcast shows, there a two or three that I enjoy the sub enough to watch in addition to the dubbed.

This was a great anime and great season finale. The only thing it missed was how Lakan meet Maomao. Too bad it showed only in 3 frames but not complete and context. Anyway, it was great. And when second season was announced at then end of the episode, I jumped from my seat with a big smile on my face.

In the manga Maomao actually wanted Lakan to pick Meimei, since Meimei actually likes Lakan. Plus her mom isn't going to be alive for much longer. They cut out a lot of stuff from the manga. Including the reason why Maomao is so traumatized by Lakan

​​@@DefinitivelyZach She's fine with whoever Lakan chose. It's just she knows Meimei has affection for Lakan. Meimei's also nearing retirement, she's a wife material, and Lakan is a decent guy. And like I said, Fengxian's time is limited, Lakan will inevitably be heartbroken for the 2nd time. She just gave a hint to Lakan, I think she left the choice to the people involved.

i don't know about contraceptives, but I had a friend who was a ethno botanist and was very knowledgeable about plants, their historic uses, and the compounds in them and she mentioned a few that could induce miscarriage, though not as certain as what we have today they could pretty reliably abort babies if someone was pregnant. I'm sure they had some kinds of contraceptives but I'm not sure how reliable they were.

Yeah, if anything fail they gotta use more stronger one, even with mercury, which is really used in Edo era in Japan, at first they use cheaper contraceptives if they can help it

The pleasure district is based off the one in Edo Japan so the abortions were done with mercury. That was the "medicine" used. Though they could have something better. This show has a slightly higher understanding of medicine than what was typical of the time with Maomao knowing about inherited traits like Colour blindness. They don't know germ theory yet so you get things like the wrong explanation for why honey is bad for babies.

Considering that Maomao considers quicksilver (mercury) a nasty poison not to be consumed casually I kinda doubt she’d use them in abortificants. Since you mention colour blindness I assume you’ve read ahead and yeah, what she uses to make it hasn’t been explained. Elderberries were apparently used to terminate pregnancies in Europe, I don’t know if they’d grow as far east as the Li Empire/China, but perhaps Maomao has access to something similar.

This is because your bones are still actively growing until you're done with puberty. As long as there was some of the metacarpal pinky bone there, it would grow back, albeit probably not exactly the correct way.
