There's an important detail here if you know Chinese The balsam's Chinese is 鳳仙, and its pronunciation is fengxian. (You can listen carefully.) The woodsorrel's nickname is cat's foot. Cat's Chinese is 貓, its pronunciation is mao. This is how FengXian name her daughter, and it is also the same reason they draw cat ear on MaoMao's head.

An illness. Somewhat. It's a neurological condition that you're either born with or is the result of trauma. In my case I was born with it. So was my mother. I can't picture faces. Prosopagnosia. There is no treatment and there is no cure. Approximately 2% of the population has it to an extent but it's significantly worse in some people. My father shaved and I couldn't recognize him in a crowd. I can't picture my mother's face. When I try to picture, say, my grandmother I can only remember the most recent picture I've seen and only for a certain period of time after. Weird thing is that I can see faces in my dreams. I don't always but it has happened.

I'm surprised at how few people picked up that Luoman is Lakan's uncle. This was the big reveal in the story that Luoman is Maomao's great uncle.

It happens later in the novels to be fair. Though them just saying it here is fine as it's not overly plot relevant.

@@hannibal-rb3goit happens at the same time. During Lakan’s flashback, he sees his uncle with a MaoMao and thats supposed to be when it truly “clicks” for the audience.

They don't state it as well as the novel, but she is trying to get him to buy out one of her sisters. Also He could beat her mother in chess (shogi differs by translation) but he could never beat her in go, so he basically decided she would win by choosing the game. He was gone three years because of some conflict (I forget the specifics). And the Uncle is the adoptive father of maomao, they actually spell it out her before the books did.

The only thing you should've said is that Lakan always won at chess (chinese chess) and Fengxian always won at go, so by lakan choosing the go he actually thought of letting her win so she could get what she wants and that's where the "sex" comes in. She planned that so her price would be lowered. Edit: Additionally, when lakan came back from abroad he swoop the heir from his brothers and father and could finally afford fengxian but unfortunate things happened

Fengxian The people who Maomao cherishes, Loumen, old lady, Meimei, Juka, Pairin, perhaps her mother Fengxian need closure and this her way of perhaps not healing but closure so all of them can move forward.

Lakan was self aware of his issues that his Uncle Loumen tried to help him. But in his arrogance he did not try to really understand those around him. His failure to connect either Fengxian or understand her communications with him. After THREE years he finally understood. He was not malicious just lazy and neglectful - abandoning Fengxian dooming her to her shameful state and disease. Maomao understands it was not all his fault so she does not hate him but also has no affection for him. Recall her comment she lost ability for love in Fengxian womb.

In the anime they mentioned Lakan was away to study, but some say in the source material(LN) and in the mange he was sent to do military campaigns.
