I am in the Fresno area. So much has certainly changed since this time. Hotel Fresno is well being remodeled now. I have been many times to downtown Fresno. Many services remain in the downtown area of Fresno. It's great to see the beauty of Fresno. It's about to be 150 years of Fresno being founded. My interest is a two-story house in Fresno, something I hope to achieve soon.

Interesting to see what has come about since this program. Fulton Mall is out, Fulton Street back in, all freeways are in, new housing in downtown is in, new businesses and restaurants are coming in, people are starting to come back to downtown. It's just the beginning.... If only we can fill up the old Bank of Italy building, that would be great!

My late grandfather, who worked in construction, told me something presciently in the early 90's. He said, 'they're gonna build up north until they run out of room, then slowly will come back to the places they left behind, starting with downtown'. He said that two years before he died in 1993. He was right on the money.

This is crazy...seeing the ACTUAL Ted C. Wills, who the rec center on San Pablo is named after, the stereotypes of 'scary' downtown (which just meant too Black and Brown for folks rapidly moving north even then) that led to the decay of the Fulton Mall (which I never got to see in its heyday as my family moved down to Fresno from the Bay Area in 1985), and the freeway system, which didn't fully get completed until the early 2000s!?!? Remember when 41 used to end on Bullard Avenue!? Remember when the area that is now Riverpark was basically just dust? That's what I remember in the mid to late 80's before the money started pouring in to North Fresno. This is a reminder that none of that was a coincidence.

Great story, loved seeing the details and hearing the thought processes and perceptions regarding Downtown. I moved to Fresno from Oregon in 1989 to go to Fresno State. One of the first things I was told by Fresno State's welcome crew at the new student orientation was to not go south of Shaw Avenue, especially do not go Downtown. First thing I did, I drove Downtown! And, it was pretty much like this 1984 video. I didn't feel like I was in danger, just amazed at how lifeless and empty it was. Later, I learned how this particular early pedestrian mall experiment failed (like the almost 200 other pedestrian malls in the US, the City focused on other things and the problem remained. Flash forward 25 years, the Mayor introduces a successful campaign to revive Fresno's image from Downtown outward. It's been a virtual renaissance of community, art, business, education, living spaces and restored buildings since then. Still lots of work to be done, but its not hard to see how far we've come.

Mayor Dan Whitehurst, the youngest mayor in Fresno's history...elected at 28 years old back in 1977. He was in the last year and a half of his term when this was produced. He ran again in 2000, but lost to "Bubba", actor Alan Autry.

Probably the biggest hitch in the Fulton Mall plan was that other malls/ mall like areas would be built. But I doubt most people saw that coming really. Both Fashion Fair and Manchester Center were still dirt lots and orchards in the 60's.

ironically, this misconception that downtown is "crime ridden" and people avoid it as a result probably makes it the safest part of town since anyone looking to take advantage of people would go somewhere more heavily trafficked. thanks for staying away and getting mugged in tower district and around fashion fair mall! helps keep my neighborhood safe!

Here it is 2023 and Stefani Booroojian is still on the air. The Fulton Mall is gone and traffic is flowing again. Downtown is more dangerous than ever. The homeless are everywhere. Sidewalks are blocked by tents and shanties. Most of the stores cater to Hispanics and alot of them can't even speak English. Downtown is not coming back. It's like a 3rd world country. Without government offices being there, there would be nothing left.
