Fresno: The City That Gave Us The Credit Card

Fresno isn’t often included on the “top 10” places to visit in California, so you might be surprised to learn that in 1958 it played a central role in reshaping the face of how the entire world does business. Bank of America’s BankAmericard was the world’s first universal revolving credit card and in September 1958, the bank mailed out 60,000 BankAmericard credit cards to residents of its purposely selected remote test market: Fresno, California. The project was nearly a complete failure, but it eventually morphed into the iconic credit card we know today - Visa.
In this episode, I check out the city of Fresno for myself…or at least as much as I could in light of the 105º heat.

good start to a video but it looks like you as well were surprised on how big Fresno really is. fresno is the 5th largest city in the state of California by population. SF is 4th, and Sacramento is 6th. Unfortunately looks like you went at what some may say is the worse time to go during the peak summer heat. You barely scratched the surface as you said and you should continue. Fresno is the closest major city to Yosemite and the other national parks (sierra national forest, kings national park, sequoia national park). It's literally in the backyard. The international airport in Fresno (FAT) is called Fresno Yosemite. It snows in fresno actually (fresno county) as there is a ski resort about an hour away along with sno parks during the winter but doesnt actually snow in the city so you can have your cake and eat it too and not have to deal with snow. Fresno also has cleaned up it's crime which was a big negative reputation it had especially in the 90s and early 00s. @@ExploreAlways yes, i mentioned the pointers because i too was shocked on my visit and that stuff was pointed out to me. fresno doesnt seem like much also because the 99 is at the edge of the city, unlike other big cities where the main highways actually go through the middle so people get an idea of the size of it. You really have to go through 180 then the 41 and even 168 to see how large it is. There isnt enough HIGH PRODUCTION travel videos like this for the city and yours is really one of the first if only one of its kind. Hoping you do a follow up.

@@2JSRMY yea, but so will most of the entire san joaquin valley up and down california including towards Sac and the entire central valley region of CA. But look at las vegas and AZ, they have it worse. Fresno only suffers from this heat 2 months I guess 3 months if you are super sensitive to heat. but after that you have 9-10 months of great weather. I was looking at las vegas weather, and its generally 5-10 degrees hotter than fresno and they have like 2 months straight of 100+ degree weather. at least every now and then fresno dips to 90s haha. Az also is worse. And at least its dry heat. People in high humid places say they only get to 85-90 but feels like 110 and sweating because of the humidity and prefer the heat of the valley.

They have cleaned up downtown a lot once the ballpark went in. Now it just needs more night life. After an evening baseball he everything down there is closed and everyone is out in the North side of town lol. They have started trying to bring downtown back though. J Salman Just want to point out, as someone who was born in Fresno and raised in Central California, no one who actually lives here considers it Northern California. Only arrogant Bay Area residents think Central California is part of Northern California. There are 6 and a half million people in Central and 6 and a half million in the Bay Area. We are as much our own region as you guys are. We have our own culture and if I were trying to relate to you on some of the cultural similarities we DO have you would immediately point out to my face why we are not a part of you. Bay Area has its culture and it's world-renowned. But Central California is almost its own ethnicity. We are NOT Northern California. So please, if you are going to call us anything, call us Central California. Or, more specifically, the Central Valley.

A little side note about the whole NorCal vs SoCal question, and I’m sure most long time residents already know about this so this one’s for the outsiders, but a few miles north of the San Joaquin River on Highway 99 there is a historic landmark in the center median called where the palm meets the pine. This spot marks the actual geographic dividing line between NorCal and SoCal and there is an actual palm tree next to a pine tree planted in the center median, and they’re full size trees so it’s not hard to see. But yeah, despite all that we consider ourselves the Central Valley or Central Cali.

Santa Cruz in 3 hours, same for Monterey or Pismo. Also Yosemite is in our backyard. Housing prices are way lower than North or south Cali.

That's interesting to learn Fresno was the test bed for the BofA credit card. Somewhat makes sense, the area used as tests for things like Starbucks, movies, and others to see how they'll do in other markets. Being a transplant to the area, came with the outsider perspective, quickly realized while it doesn't have the same levels of things to do as Bay or Southland, there still is a fairly enough to keep one busy. With the added benefit it's more laid back feel. Big benefits are being 45 min from Yosemite, 1 hr. to Vegas by plane, and a few hours drive from Bay area, Central Coast, and the Southland. Of course with all the nearby agriculture having access to all sorts of fruits and veggies. Still never gotten use to the heat, which is half the year. With the running joke that spring only lasts 2 weeks before it heats up with relief near Halloween. And yes, Fresno is "northern California" :-)

The video is correct. Fresno was, is, and has always been a "test market." I remember in the early 70s they tested a new method of listening to music --- the Cassette --- far before other markets.

Fresno is central California. Or true California depending on how you decide the geographical areas. From Bakersfield to Modesto, the entire width of the valley, can be called Central California. From the “grapevine” heading south is what you can consider Southern California only. We’re different people completely

I've lived here in the central valley my whole life and I have never ever been to kerney mansion. My favorite Japanese gardens, people go there to take their quince photos or wedding photos or whatever photo, last time I checked you had to pay twenty bucks to reserve an hour for photo shoots and they use to charge two dollars for extra people that weren't on the permit this was before the pandemic. Also I have never ever been to underground gardens.

Wow that is something i did not know about my hometown. Fresnada is the Central Valley. neither north or south. Oh and yeah Fresno summers are blazing hot. Well done my man Fresno needs as much positive re-inforcement as it can get its a tough city. My favorite places to go was Lost Lake and Millerton but that was back in the day in the 80s and 90s and also the San Jauquin was fun to explore too. Hensley lake was cool too use to go fishing up there. i also use to go camp up near squaw valley when i was a kid. Those days were fun. Inside the city the place to be was the Mall Manchester yes! manchester use to be fun to go to back in the 80s and early 90s in the mid 90s they built the island water park out near Highway city. Clovis lakes is another Water Park.

Also invented the raisin, and the "fresno scraper" (what became the modern bulldozer). Check out the Forestiere Underground Gardens, Blossom Trail (early spring), Woodward Park, Chaffee Zoo. We are close to the mountains, rivers, lakes, and 3 National Parks. (Yosemite, Kings Canyon, Sequoia) Visit Fresno in the Spring and early Fall for good mild weather.

We're southern. Travel up the 99 north from Fresno, in Madera county on the median between the north and southbound lanes you'll see a palm tree and a pine tree. The palm marks the south, the pine the north. So technically, Fresno is in the southern half of California.

I was born and raised here in the Central Valley. I've always considered Fresno as part of Southern California, because SCE built their power generating facilities and structure at Shaver Lake which is north of here above Clovis. That power generation facility is credited today for lighting Los Angeles. All of PG&E in the south valley also gets their power from Southern California Edison facility at Shaver Lake. So despite what the "gang members say" I have to go with history.

Fresno could have been an upgraded city decades ago, but business ties with government had greed made them shift the money to more popular cities. Anyways, 559 still have the goods for cheaper prices.
