I propose that language and verbal speaking is a defense mechanism. It creates structure and order, words have symbolic meaning and provide some sense of certainty that the mind can cling to in order to have some subjective sense of control. A cognitive countermeasure to the limbic system.

Can I assume that this theory is somewhat logical and is this theory accepted in contemporary psychology? Is it valid?

so what’s the difference between projection and displacement when in both cases the individual re directs attention elsewhere?
@PsychExamReview
@PsychExamReview Жыл бұрын
Projection is more about attributing to others thoughts or feelings that you hold (like accusing someone of not liking you instead of recognizing you don't like them) while displacement is redirecting your actions away from the actual source to something less threatening (such as yelling at children instead of your boss when angry due to work, or slamming a door instead of hitting the person who made you upset). Hope this helps!

Very helpful. Could you please tell me the book title that has complete information about Defense Mechanisms??
@PsychExamReview
@PsychExamReview 4 жыл бұрын
Sure, these defense mechanisms were first compiled by Anna Freud, Sigmund Freud's daughter, in her book "The Ego and the Mechanisms of Defence". You can find more about the book on its Amazon page here: amzn.to/3ckkqgj

Thank you. I’m especially interested in understanding these defence mechanisms in relation to cult members. Why the stay, and why they can remain stagnant even after they leave.
@PsychExamReview
@PsychExamReview Жыл бұрын
In that case you might also be interested in theories related to cognitive dissonance. There's a book "When Prophecy Fails" which describes how a few researchers infiltrated a doomsday cult to try to understand the thought processes of the members, which I describe briefly in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o3LJiKmJas6Xqck

Is compartmentalization another way to describe repression?
@PsychExamReview
@PsychExamReview 4 жыл бұрын
Compartmentalization is a different proposed defense mechanism. It's more about keeping conflicting thoughts isolated from one another, though both may still be able to be brought into consciousness. This is different from repression which would make the thoughts unconscious. Hope this helps!

Sir the term "projection" anyhow reminds me the word used several times in the movie "inception" while defensing against extraction. Can we just relate those terms in reality? Or toatally different?
@PsychExamReview
@PsychExamReview 3 жыл бұрын
The use of the term in the film is fictional and isn't directly related to the defense mechanism, but it does demonstrate that a lot of psychoanalytic-sounding terms are common in popular culture when describing psychological ideas. So it's common to see terms like defense mechanism, repression, denial, complexes, ego, subconscious, etc. used in tv and film, even if the use doesn't match the original meaning or theory.

Hello can u give me some example of deni and reaction formation
@PsychExamReview
@PsychExamReview 4 жыл бұрын
Sure, denial refers to denying the existence of the thoughts that cause anxiety, while reaction formation refers to having the opposite thoughts of those that cause anxiety. A simple real-life example might be a young boy not admitting to himself that he likes a girl in his class (denial) or claiming that he hates her or that she is ugly (reaction formation). Of course, these examples are just to illustrate the Freudian concepts, not meant to be modern psychological explanations of behavior :)
