I just came across your videos! They are excellent! I took voice lessons from my choir director while in high school (I'm 33 now) and she taught me good breath support and did all kinds of different techniques to help me learn to properly use my diaphragm, etc. One day while working on a song, she kind of slams on the piano, looks at me, and goes, "You vibratoted! I don't know if that's a word! But you did it!" It was hilarious. She was a great teacher! She also trained me as an Alto-Mezzo-Belter. Sadly, due to illness, I've lost a lot of my range and most of my belting range. My illness affects they way my body utilizes oxygen and I fatigue quite easily. That's not to say that I can't still sing, just have to sing differently is all. I've no doubt that with practice I can still do it. :-)

I have a natural vibrato in singing and flute playing but it takes me an hour of warm up to finally get "in the zone" and then fly with my notes. I am sure I don't know exactly how to create the support I need. I have been a lifelong singer but I finally decided to take lessons at 63. I have made much improvement and most people think, why start at such a late age.But when you love singing and the feeling it gives you,it is never too late.... Thank you so much for your wonderful suggestions. I will go over each of your posts many times. I have already noticed improvements.

I was always vibrato-less and heavily envied those with vibrato. I have been taught the trill exercises but I never really practiced those because I thought it was artificial. Somewhere along the line I developed the “imitate other singers with vibrato” technique and it started happening-although I haven’t mastered it yet. These days I don’t even know how I generate the vibrato and I stopped worrying about it. With that said, I do not think my vibrato is a wobble or a trill and I think it sounds good-but I’m working on it as I continue studying opera, now.

I used to envy my grandmothers singing and whistle vibrato and I do not have it whatsoever. At all. But as I was listening to you and other similar videos it made me realise that my music taste has shaped around it and I think I will make a concious choice to find at least one vibrato song and try to actively program it and I guess fake it til I make it and just keep trying until I accidentally succeed. Because my taste in music don't really have it in it all that much and if it does I can get away with skipping it when I sing along. Thank you for helping me reflect over this. :)

I have this natural vibrato that just suddenly came out when I was a kid. But the thing is nobody thought me how to do it. And somethimes I am having a hard time on controlling it. Especially when I sing some 80's songs. That's why I don't sing much of it. I get too concious about my singing style. But I joined the choral group when I was in high school and it kinda help me out a bit but still having a hard time. I wanna achieve those vibrato that singers have that they can naturally control without ruining my mood. Because some of singers kind of piss me off. Anyway thank you for helping us out! Thank you for making videos. You gave me hope to continue singing :)

I think alot of controlling it is in the diaphram. You'll notice if you don't flex you stomach, it is harder to use vibrato. Also the speed each word is sang.I'm still working on it some, although it is getting closer. I had natural vibrato, but I took some misguided advice which caused me to forget how it was done, then when I got it back, I used too much. After someone said that my Ave Maria would be good with less vibrato, I started working on finding a balance. Volume of your voice can effect it too.
@Will-Max
@Will-Max 4 жыл бұрын
@@maxkaddell It's hard for me to find a balance, also. Certain notes, at certain volume, came naturally for me. Controlled vibrato (strength and speed...and at low volumes) is proving to be challenging.

I have had a vibrato since my early teens, I am 61 now, and I do love classical and particularly bel canto singing. First point; vibrato without breath support is wobble, which can sound either pretentious or ugly. Second: learning to sing without it is difficult. I sing in a chorale and a church choir which allows me to experiment while blending with the other first tenors. My voice coach is working with me on slow. expressive show music, and that has forced me to reduce my vibrato, except at the end of long notes. I have been working on it for months, and progress is slow, but well worth it.

You sound like a show-off:-) The opposite of why most other people are here, to learn to develop vibrato, then you come on and tell us hard it is for you to reduce vibrato. Man, couldn't you just keep that to yourself, lol.

When I started singing, I was always researching how to use vibrato. A friend joined me on "past the point of no return", and I mentioned how the blend of her vibrato and my pure tone sounded and she mentioned how she has a hard not not using it (classicly trained). My thoughts were, I wish mine was like that. Now I am often trying not to use vibrato, now that I fixed my posture and technique. I feel her frustration! When I was trying to develop it. I would just say, "ah", start middle, go low, high, you know just sing that note. Then do the same thing singing "ah ee ah ee", and it usually appear somewhere in there. As a relatively new singer, I'd recommend new singers try it with each vowel sound, because even if vibrato isn't developed, knowing the effect different sounds have on the tone is important.

I have use vibrato and whistle register for a long time and didn't even realize it. Maybe since I was 7, because I like to do something cool or to try things that my voice can do. I fell really lucky and overtime, I managed to perfect it. What I'm trying to say is: You can do anything if you keep trying and of course if nature let you do it😂😂

Thank you for having the decency to position your tongue correctly. Unlike the majority of KZbinrs in the singing coach arena, I never once had to cringe. While I applaud your efforts to educate, we both know that the best advice you could possibly give your viewers is to get a reputable vocal teacher. Preferably, a member of NATS. Learning to sing requires a set of trained ears listening to you and, more important, a set of trained eyes watching your body as you sing. For those of you with legitimate voices, a credentialed and seasoned teacher is absolutely essential. Remember that if your teacher is constantly yelling at you and leaving the piano to touch your face, neck, shoulders, torso, and legs, then you're in the right place. Also, don't expect to be allowed to sing anything other than arpeggios for the first five years.
@John_Malloy
@John_Malloy 3 жыл бұрын
I agree that a second set of ears listening helps but so does recording your own voice. You say there is a "correct" tongue position. I disagree. One size does not fit all. It should be the choice of the artist. Singers must ultimately find their own way. They must learn to be their own vocal coach. The best singers, the great ones, do what works for them. Performing a technique (outside of the absolute basics) because it is "correct" is vocal suicide

Now my thougts, that vibrato comes out when your voice is balanced and mixed. When your head voice and chest voice are mixed, when you sing on support, and when you dont push, when your vocal folds are not strained. And breath flow is not catched and stopped but comes out concentrated but free. Balanced resonance, proper breath support/air flow, freedom and not overstraining.

Never thought I could sing well so never sang in front of anyone. I joined my church choir years ago since my boyfriend was Minister of Music. I enjoyed it and learned a lot about music. But, I kept my singing pretty low. Funny though about vibrato. I sure didn’t have it for a while but it just kind of appeared out of nowhere. It has been years since my choir experience and I was looking at apps. I saw the karaoke app Sing by Smule so thought I would check it out. This was 4 years ago. I joined the app and people actually sang with me! LOL At first I could not sing with vibrato without sounding like an idiot. Then as time went by it came again without me giving it hardly any try. Now It is effortless. Don’t know how that happened but new singers like you said shouldn’t force it. I have become such a better singer just by singing! But the tips I have learned from coaches here on KZbin have been a tremendous help and also just listening to others who have great voices and sing as if they were professionally trained. I just found you today and listened to a number of your vids and subscribed! Thank you so much for what you do here! 🙏🏻🌷💕

I can sing totally without any vibrato or even with, but then I´m sounding a little bit like in your bad example 5.50. I`m working with my new teacher on this (He said I had an unbalanced voice) and now it is getting better, it is only at the end on a frase, but still too fast. What can I do, wich exercise can help me?

I think a lot of teachers have this “if you can play it slowly you can play it quickly” (Twoset gang are you here?) mentality when it completely ignores the technique differences. In piano a lot of teachers teach trills by asking you to play it slowly and speed up. But you need to instead practice a “fluttering” motion with your hand and completely release tension. You cannot consistently play a trill if you just play two notes fast like you do slowly.

Hi, Freya....thank you for all these instructional videos! I so appreciate all the time and love you put into these wonderful videos! But I do have a question......you said that you developed your vibrato by listening and imitating what you heard....but when I was in college, I took a vocal class and the instructor said that if we do the vibrato deliberately, even though we don't have it, that we won't develop it. I've been singing my whole life...just love to sing...there is a joy in my soul that I experience when I sing! Yet, I don't have vibrato...I SO want to develop it! From time to time, it will "show up" but not usually....and when it shows up, it's only for a few seconds. (For a few days, when I was ten years old, vibrato hit me good and hard! But then it disappeared.) Anywho, are you sure that imitating the vibrato that we hear from our favorite singers will actually develop it in our own vocals?

the problem is, i know i have good vocal tone, because i've been singing practically since i was a little girl (im 21 now lol). i started to be able to sing with vibrato once i was around 13. but, because i never had any kind of vocal training whatsoever, my vibrato is not constant. for example, when i am singing a song, and i kind of mentally tell my voice to do a vibrato when i'm holding a note, it comes out not at all the way i expected it to. however, i'll find that, when im humming to myself or just randomly start singing without actually listening to myself sing, my vibrato comes out perfectly. and then i realize i just sang a good vibrato, and now that i subconsciously realized it, once i start singing, but this time more aware and actually listening, my vibrato again stops coming. i am really insecure about my singing, since i haven't had any vocal training. maybe that's why my insecurity acts on me, and my vibrato stops coming out when im singing. i dont know XD but is there something i can do about this? i'm not sure if what i said made sense, or if it was relatable somehow. (btw that first point you said, about it NOT being the alternation between two pitches , is SO TRUE! there are so many videos about vibrato which say that, and i end up doing EXACTLY what you did in the video haha)

OK - I'm a professional pianist, have my master's in music theory, and have been singing in choirs all my life - I can sight sing, all that stuff - I just have never been able to "find" my vibrato...EXCEPT - two or 3 years ago my thyroid became hyperactive, I lost tons of weight, and I was diagnosed with something called Grave's disease. During the next period of 2 years or so, while my thyroid was majorly hyperactive, all the sudden my voice had vibrato! It was magical! But now that my thyroid is finally stabilized (with the help of thyroid meds) my vibrato has disappeared. I can't seem to get it back, except every now and then if I sing really softly in a low register. Any thoughts on this?

hi Freya, love your videos, one observation as a viewer is I find you more engaging when there is not just a stark white background behind you. ive watched many of your videos and I am using them to help teach my daughters how to sing, just my two cents. that and five dollars will get you a cup of coffee. haha ♫

I have no idea how I taught myself how to control my vibrato. I can do a vibrato as I speak. When my sister can’t do a vibrato at all. At all.

No it is not the alternation between two pitches! That is tremolo.

mine is very weird and I can only do it if I try to sing a note very quietly. The frequency of the vibrato is ~0,5sec! So, every 0,5 sec, I hear the "shift" it's like: ----..----..----..----.. where it should be --..--..--..--.. I have no idea how to do it louder at all :/

Again, why do so many voice teachers emphasize the upward-moving pitch-bend? Vibrato is simply a downward moving oscillation, always coming back to the main pitch, at varying speeds which the singer controls. Mystery continues as to why this is such a big mystery LOL ! Freya's lovely vibrato is a perfect example but for some reason there's some avoidance or denial going on . . .

I somehow developed a very wide vibrato, and i don't like it at all. It's distracting and i don't think it sounds very good, but i don't know how to get rid of it.

I do not have vibrato, it seems to be very hard to get, I never had this naturally, All of my singing is self-taught. The one time I did go to a vocal coach all we did was perfect breath support and support in general. Even out of the year I was with them I never had any sign of vibrato in any sense. I've struggled with it since and i'm almsot an adult now.

You will notice 100 different voice teachers, and each will have a different way to teach vibrato ....or they won't teach it at all, ridiculous they don't face reality that it's just a relaxation of pitch, downward about a half-step, moving back up to main pitch at varying speeds. Slow down any recording of great singers and hear this.

I have to agree that this video was not helpful. I think trying to explain what is going on in your soft pallate when you do a proper vibrato would help. If we don't have vibrato and try to copy-- all the bad ways happen if we dont know how to do it.

Hatch Man Do would you explain how the soft pallate feels when doing a proper vibrato?? I was instructed to do the wrong exercises and ended up having the glottal-vibrato which sounds TERRIBLE...
