actually english also has ç and x in certain dialects, it also has ʍ in some dialects, and depending on who you ask, ʍ might be an unvoiced labio-velar fricative or an unvoiced labio-velar approximant.
@RobertTeachesEnglish2 жыл бұрын
Interesting! Which dialects are you referring to? This video is based off of my Californian dialect.
@thatfamiiiarnight36652 жыл бұрын
@@RobertTeachesEnglish [ç] is in most dialects, it’s just usually written as [hj]. and [x] is in certain dialects of irish in words like loch. and [ʍ] appears in (according to wikipedia) “conservative recieved pronounciation, cultivated south african, conservative general american, irish, scottish, southern american, and new zealand” the dialect of english i speak (which is some weird irish-y variation of general american) has all of these sounds.
@thatfamiiiarnight36652 жыл бұрын
oh right, i forgot example words. [ç] is in words like hue [çu], [x] is in words like loch [lax], and [ʍ] is in words like when [ʍεn]

I have definitely heard the ʍ sound in Southern American in words like "whip" or "wheat." Thanks for the insights!

Robert you are an amazing teacher... Thanks for your efforts but unfortunately i study the British English in my university. So when i transcribed the words i got some mistakes ... And I can't find a good teacher like you 😭 so could you share videos with British English or suggest a good channel in KZbin♥️
@RobertTeachesEnglish3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your kind words. As I have grown up and studied American English all my life, that's what I teach, though at the core, it's all the same really. I suggest you learn from teachers who teach both . Here's one video I did about British English though: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jqaXYmeamqesd9U

I kindly ask what is a concept that is used to explain arbirtrariness in spelling an pronunciation in the English language?
@RobertTeachesEnglish2 жыл бұрын
@@rorisangthoane2811 The inconsistencies in spelling and pronunciation come from the fact that English borrows words from many other languages: Latin, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, Scandinavian, Japanese, Arabic ... the list goes on. We borrowed spelling from those languages as well, and so ended up pronouncing using a variety of graphemes to pronounce our sounds.
