it seems more to be a friction stir processing that isn't used to weld but to get harder metal using the advantages of that type of welding process. The result is a finer grain of the microstructure and so better mechanical features.

Soooooo what was welded here? I see a spinning bit going through a solid piece of aluminum.

I think that this weld would be used in a "butt weld." Imagine two pieces of aluminum placed together. The friction bit that was spinning would travel along the path of the joint of the two aluminum pieces, melting, "stirring" and then allowing the aluminum to cool as one piece.

I get that...I just don't get why they didn't actually show that. Just using a solid piece seems stupid when trying to show an example. They have this machine...i'm sure they have something they could have cut the piece in half with.

Bobby Cole The point of the video is to show how the welding works, doesn't matter if he they didn't actually weld anything, you can clearly see how the process is carried out, therefore do not need to ask this question, if you want to see how it is used in welding things together, there are many other videos. Another key differentiation is that this is a term called Friction Stir Processing, not Friction Stir Welding, but you can still see how the process is performed in a welding use as well.

Would you do an arc weld video on a solid piece of metal?

I see and think I understand how this process works but are the two pieces of aluminum clamp together with lots of force before welding this way? If not how are the pieces held to resist the force of this type of welding? What causes the part not to flex with the amount of heat being placed on them?

Wondering if the slag is easily removed and the surface condition of where it lands. Also does not look like it is possible to weld up to a shoulder, flat parts only?

In order to do an actual weld would require additional clamps which they may not have at the time.

I am wondering about this process, as in the context of joining two cylinders. The plunge of the tool creates an origination point in the weld but what about joining two cylinders with one continuous weld? It would seem that the tool would need to rotate around the whole cylinder and past the starting point to insure uniform weld properties.
@OriginalOmgCow

Jami Boothe You could rotate the cylinders pretty easily if the machine is placed sideways, as was done on a few of the latest space capsules at nasa.

This is amazing. How soon before one piece of metal can be drill, welded, milled and whatever else with the end result being a completely finished product from a single piece of metal? As in, not a piece of something, a working finished thingamajig. haha

HELLO, congratulation for your nice job. I am working on that process but I have some diffucties to realise a good surface. Could please provide some informations? What is the rotation speed (rpm) , feed rate,linear speed, diameter of your tool etc ... thank you very much and good job again

Actual weld here. The metal is cratered/broken - a large gap is made. It's then filled immediately with molten metal while all under the cover of the drum. Is our imagination...lacking? Having imagination differs us greatly from other mammals.

This is a pretty stupid video. A demonstration of friction stir welding, where they don't actually weld anything, just destroy a chunk of metal. I suppose it shows the power of a very fast spinning bit and some gentle pushing. This leaves the welding to the imagination. I could already do that! I want to see 2 pieces of separate metal being joined using a stirring-based friction method! Then I want to see an attempt to pull the 2 pieces apart, which fails, because they're welded. That would be a real-life demonstration of an interesting and powerful technique. But this is just a bloke ruining a perfectly good bit of metal. They had the expensive machine right there, they had one piece of aluminium. All they needed was one more piece! That's all! Then they could've actually shown some welding! And what the joint would look like, and how it could stand up to stress. But no! We get aluminium welded to nothing while being halfway buggered. Thanks a lot, KZbin!
