Frida looks so good with such a lush hairstyle, her eyes sparkle with a green emerald, a sunny and slightly flirtatious smile.

This is quite an infamous interview. Here's a rough translation. Interviewer "Anni-Frid Lyngstad.... Was this unexpected?" Frida : "I would have to say yes. I hardly dared to hope for it". Interviewer : "But did you feel that this song would hit home with the European audience?" Frida : "Yes. I felt that we stood a fair chance. But I never thought we would win". Interviewer : "What was it about this song that you thought would appeal to people?". Frida : "I think the title, to a great extent. Waterloo." Interviewer : "Stikkan Anderson...You wrote this song. Why does one write a schlager about Waterloo?". Stig : "When you write a Eurovision schlager, you don't write a schlager for Sweden but for Europe and the rest of the world. The first thing you do is to take a title that you think will be understood by everybody. Last year's song was similar. It was called 'Ring, Ring'. That title was the same in all other languages. Interviewer : Last year you did a schlager about telephoning each other. This year you did a schlager about how 40,000 people died. Cynically put...." Stig : "Yes, that was very cynically put. That was not our intention. 'Waterloo' is a famous concept all over the world. It represents something that has happened in history. It doesn't have anything to do with people dying....Nice angle, I must say. Interviewer : "What does it mean for Sweden and Swedish schlager production to win this event?" Stig : "To start with, I think it means a lot to Sweden as a tourist country. Sweden has been doing this for 19 years and entered the Eurovision, and now we finally won it. So next year, journalists from all over the world will come to Stockholm." The interviewers question about '40,000 deaths' is at about 1:10 and you can see the grimace on Stigs face. He was a very volatile character. Frida looks at him (she could probably feel his fingers tightening on her shoulder). Apparently he blew his top after the camera stopped rolling. It was just typical of the sort of hard time their own media was giving the group back then. A media that was influenced by a 'leftist' movement in Sweden in the '70's so much so that a spoof, mocking Eurovision contest was held on one of the state channels the following year while the real one was being shown on the other. Sweden even withdrew from the 1976 contest partly because of this influence too.

Thank you so much for making this transcribe! It really is a cringe- moment in history for Swedes. The irony is that ppl in the movement that discarded ABBAs music as "plastic" then consider it a national treasure today. :D

This is so interesting. Thanks for explaining. The political angle of Sweden towards Eurovision and Waterloo was never spoken about in the Anglo media. Kudos to ABBA for sticking it to the lemmings

Kinda creepy how he kept his arm around her the whole time and barley let her speak. She looked a bit uncomfortable. She looks stiff and a bit leary of him like she didn't dare interrupt

Are you kidding! Frida was Stig's golden girl. He adored her. And she always spoke highly of Stig. She let the world know in 2010 at RockNRoll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, that Stig was a great guy and they (ABBA) would not be where they are without him. Called him the 5th member of ABBA. Frida and Stig formed a strong bond. Both had lost childhoods. Stig had no father and grew up in poverty. Frida had no mom and dad. Raised by her grandmother, very little money. Stig was very good to Frida (contract) and Frida never has forgotten how important he was, not just for ABBA, but for lots of Swedish artist and for putting Swedish popular music on the map.

In 1971, Frida left the foursome after their cabaret shows winter of 1970/71 (Dec-Feb). It took a year for Stig to get Frida back. Frida knew the business. She knew her value. She had all the pull. Stig/Polar Music in 1972, offered Frida a sweet deal. Frida accepted and was all in. Stig eventually named them ABBA.

@@danbike9 just saying what it looked like to me. Stig was known to be a vile man almost always drunk with a temper. Off camera I guess he threw a fit at the Waterloo wuestion. He ruined it for Frida to work with Phil Collins again on her album shine. He called their first album which contained the mega hit I Know Something's Going On a piece of ---- and made her cry. He made it impossible for Phil and he quit. It's well documented in his memoirs. He also put the cobash on her working with Italian singer Daniel Balavoine , they recorded one song I think was called Belle? He later died in a helicopter crash. Why did he do that? Although when 3 of the 4 ABBA members sued Stig for stealing money from them (and the courts agreed) Frida was the only one that did not participate in the lawsuit.

@@Vikinggirl1679I don't think you grasp the amount of rubbish that is tossed around on social media about people, particularly celebrities. What I do know, is Frida speaks highly of Stig. So does Gorel Johnsen. See Gorel's interview circa 2018 around the time Gorel was awarded a special Grammy for her work with ABBA and music. Gorel was ABBA's secret weapon. Gorel was the fly on the wall, who know it's all. She speaks well of Stig and credits him with giving her the confidence to run Polar Music PR, regional labels, etc... Stig hired her in 1969. She had just turned 20. And look at what she accomplished for ABBA! She credits her "teacher" Stig Anderson. Her and Frida ended up as very close friends. Hope Gorel writes a bookon her experiences. Who does not love Gorel? Frida's loyalty to Stig and his family has never waivered. Stig's daughter, Marie, put together a beautiful tribute DVD compilation on Frida. From her TV days, through her 1996 final album (Deep Breath's). Frida's final album (Deep Breath's) was on Stig's daughter's record label 'Anderson Records'. Marie, married Tomas Linden, an ABBA backup singer during their concerts. Several years ago Marie and Tomas son John got married and Frida attended the wedding. The common thread that run's through Frida is she does forget those who helped ABBA achieve their huge success. Frida came from nothing. An orphan that was not wanted by her home country of Norway. Not worthy as she was a "German baby". Look at her today!!!! Still thankful for all around her. No negativity. Re: Benny, Bjorn and Agnetha & Stig Stig died in 1997. It has been 26years since he passed away. I am thinking that Benny, Bjorn and Agnetha have come to peace with Stig in their own way. They are all nice and good people and know if it wasn't for Stig none of them would be worth 100's of millions of dollars enjoying their golden years heard ABBA songs still relevant in 2023.
