Growing up in the 1970's, we had five apple trees growing in our yard, as my Dad had spent many hours choosing just the right kind of tree and the right kind of apple. They ranged from huge, sour, green Anoka apples that were wonderful in pies and desserts. And, smallish crab apples that were good in homemade apple jelly. A couple of the apple trees were Haralson apples, which are a University of Minnesota vintage cultivar. The Haralson's were excellent to eat just as is, picked fresh from the tree. My Dad was a fanatic about what a 'good' apple was, as he ate sliced apples almost every day with his lunch. I'm convinced that his love of apples are one reason he lived to 90 years old with very few health issues.

Your dad sounds like a super cool and interesting guy. I would love to try one of those Haralson apples but doubt I could find one in Quebec!
@JillWhitcomb1966 Жыл бұрын
@@Lucysmom26 Bonsoir ! Haralson apple trees are difficult to find as the cultivar is well over 100 years old, and they are known as a 'vintage' apple or heirloom apple these days. As for my Dad, he was very knowledgeable about gardening and plants as he learned all of that that from his parents.

What about all that “stuff” found on the surface of apples bought in grocery stores? No matter how hard I try to wash it off, whatever that white stuff is doesn’t all come off. Sometimes apples feel like they are covered with a waxy substance. I have been peeling my apples because it but I hate missing out on all the nutrients found in the peel! What would you suggest?

Do the benefits remain when you cook apples, like in an apple crumble?

A quick search showed that some flavonoids are degraded by heat. But a crumble with oats and minimal sugar still beats a candy bar. 😀

Organic apples are now coated with apeel...unless you get them from a grower that doesn't use it.

@@betzib8021 what is “apeel”? I’ve noticed sometimes my organic apples seem to have a coating on them but I don’t know what. Lately they seem to be super-clean with nothing on them, but it’s hard to believe they are in such good condition with no coating. I get my organic apples from Costco or from Natural Grocer. I assumed if they were organic, that any coating they have must not be harmful, but now you’ve got me wondering 🤔. I don’t buy conventional apples because I always eat the apple skin and didn’t want to have to worry about washing stuff off 😐.

How is this news? I’ve been hearing since I was a child (because as a child I preferred peeled apples) “eat the peel! That’s the part with the nutrition!” So how is this a new development? I’m 65 btw

We also hear a lot about the importance of eating vegetables and fruits, but the vast majority of people only think about vitamins and minerals, not about the antioxidants like flavonoids. So yes, this is news for 95%+ of people who dont know WHY its important to eat the peek.

this channel has a video on how to remove chemical residues effectively. He compares a salt solution against proprietary 'washes'. The salt solution removes 100% of residue, if i remember right, whilst the store bought washes had little to no effect. Dont ave a link or name of vid. Dont know about the solution strength or the length of time washing to achieve this effect. Maybe is not so important or specific? Also all sore bought appples have been given a waxy coat to improve shelf life. Perhaps this is contributing your sickness?
@dianeladico1769 Жыл бұрын
Except organic doesn't have 'chemicals' (besides the food-grade wax which washes off) and pesticides.

@DrReginaldFinleySr Жыл бұрын
Most of the pesticides, heavy metals, etc that enter planted vegetation come from the soil, not the protective covering. The only way to know how much chemical infiltration is occurring is through a lab test. The organic label is mostly meaningless without a laboratory analysis.
