A skydiver has a snappy premature parachute opening at 7,000 feet while back-flying on a 2-way freefly jump. Ouch! 😲 Luckily the other jumper wasn't above him or that he wasn't flying head down when the premie occurred.
** Why did this happen? **
The rig was inspected and nothing noticeable was found, so perhaps the pilot chute just wasn't tucked deep enough into the BOC and the exposed fabric caught just enough air while he was on his back to cause the premature opening.
** What could have been done differently? **
Just a friendly reminder to double check your gear -- heck, even triple check if you're OCD -- and make sure you have a tight BOC to keep you pilot chute firmly in place until deployment.

Premature but definitely not a hard opening! He even had time to pull on the rears to inflate the end cells 🤣 Looks like a typical Sabre 2 opening.

I had a whacker where the slider didn't stay up - I must've stowed it wrong somehow, though I could clearly picture the whole pack-job after the fact. Never figured it out. But that, for me, was the end of skydive season and the start of physio season.

Skills need some work.- Hence the skydiving! How did you do before wind tunnels? How did anyone get better? C'mon. Shit happens bro, keep going. Your lucky. I was sit flying with a friend in the 300-400 jump area years ago , and he had an old rw Vector and it had some boc mods, but at about 8000' he had a premature opening, but the pc went up in front of his right arm, breaking it, along with dislocating his shoulder, surgery followed and I never saw him again unfortunately. Was going to be a great jumper. Already was. I'll have to look for my video

Another PO from another loose BOC pocket? When will freeflyers start using pull outs also lnown as pin pulls to stop these happening?
@FlamingBrad25

Why would you go back to an old system with known problems when a properly maintained BOC and the right handle design is all you need?
@BrohaMLD
@BrohaMLD 5 жыл бұрын
It was my fault for not having it done before I left to Australia. My BOC wasn't THAT bad but it just so happened to catch me this time.
@50CAL133rd

There seems to be a relativly high number of POs caused by snagged or loos BOC syatems. The inherant higher wind speeds of freeflying and direct airflow on the boc whilst sit flying does not help. I guess you could call the POs using BOC a known problem? The main problem with pin pulls is people dropping the pad without pulling the pin or the pad bridle to the pin snagging on the container due to misrouting during closure causing a hard pull. Dropping the pad is a training issue particularly for jumpers uaed to BOC systems. With training it is possible to 'find' the pad if dropped. As with any system its best to pull stable. The advantages of pin pulls over BOC are that PCIT malfunctions are extremly unlikely as are PC hesitations and delayed deployments becuase the jumper physicaly pulls the pin and pulls the PC into the relative wind in one motion. Another major plus point is that the pads are generaly less likely to snag in the aircraft and provide very little drag at high speeds making them ideal for sit, head down and speed jumps where their use significantly decreases the chance of a PO. Its a bumber if you loose the pad and have to go for the reserve but at leat you only have a few inches of bridle trailing behind you and well out of the way of a deploying reserve canopy. I have used a pin pull since 97 and I have had one hard pull leading to a reserve ride due to a misrouted closure using a fast rurn around packing service. My fault for not picking it up in pre flight. Im about to order a new rig. I wll be specking a pin pull for it if still avaliable in this era of BOC standardization.

@@50CAL133rd As I said proper gear maintenance is key and with such you should never have a PO. A hard pull or reserve ride due to dropping the pad do not sound fun to me. My BOC is so tight I can barely get my PC in if it's not rolled nicely. My freefly pud has a tuck tab which makes pulling by accident much harder as well as covering the last of the exposed fabric and bridle. It's the same size and shape as the pull-out systems I've seen making snagging on it a null point. I cock my PC twice every packjob to prevent a PC in tow. I keep my closing loop tight and replace when it gets worn to prevent a horseshoe. A deployment system should be fire and forget, not fire and oh don't forget to pull it out far enough and don't drop that pad or you're going to reserve. There is a reason throw-out has become standard.

@@FlamingBrad25 Great! If only all jumpers were that attentive. Each to their own. Personally the thought of PCIT and HS malfunctions give me the hebejeebies so I chose to jump a pull out as I don't want my reserve to have to clear any crap hanging about before deployment. When doing a speed jump i definitely don't want to worried about a PO and the pull out gives me confidence in this regard. Hard pulls are not a problem if the bridle is correctly routed in the same way that hard pulls from BOC is not a problem if the pilot chute is packed correctly. As I say each to their own but a lot of new jumpers don't necessarily get the choice naturally progressing from school kit with BOC. I do jump BOC on a second rig only because I have not got round to changing it but i don't use this one for any fast stuff. This is this rig i will be replacing.
