Jake has absolutely no social awareness, and because of Jane's own flustered denial earlier on, has absolutely no idea that Jane is into him and hurt every time he talks to her about dirk. It's honestly a testament to how they are as characters. Utterly incapable of just talking things out to a resolution until it explodes. And by the time it does, Jake is so taken by surprise he has literally no understanding of why she's mad in the first place.

Long story short, Jane is John's grandmother (usually called Nana) but in an alternate universe where she essentially takes John's place because another character reset the timeline through a method called the 'Scratch'. It’s based on the webcomic Homestuck! This comes from a scene where the characters Jake and Jane are fighting because Jake didn’t realize Jane had a crush on him, so he got with one of her best friends on her birthday after her dad went missing (EXTREMELY pared down version of the explanation, there’s also a bunch of wild sci fi stuff happening at the same time)

Without explaining all of homestuck to you, green guy named Jake got together with one of there mutual friends on the girl (janes) birthday. The problem, is Jane's got a crush on him and he's so dense he didn't know. At all. Even after basically confessing to him he thought she ment the guy he just got together with. Also she's going through alot more atm as well, like her dad having just been kidnapped on top of everything. Hope this helps.
