How exactly is this film underrated? Most people who were born in the 90s and onward consider this the best high school sports movie ever, next to maybe Remember the Titans. It spawned a television show, it's considered a Billy Bob Thornton classic, most people in sports who's seen this film (and the biggest demographic for a film like this would be jocks) will tell you this scene and this speech is one of the greatest they've ever seen. I seen players get hurt and never play again. And of the players i know who played in college they'll tell you how much harder it is to even make the NFL. Clip was uploaded 5 years ago and the movie came out in 2004. Since then, I've come to see this movie in a totally different light and now have a new perspective. This is not suppose an attack or meant to incite an argument, but it's just what I took away from the movie. One could even see it a subtle message the movie was trying to make. You see, FNL is NOT about football. It's about what happens when people (in this case, young aspiring athletes who think the highest peak of their life is winning a football championship) put all their chips on one plate, and in some cases (especially for Boobie Miles), they face a devastating loss. The insurmountable pressure put upon the team and their coaches from the town, school, the sport boosters, and their own family and friends makes them think they NEED to, in a sense, be "perfect." The people of this movie make football rule EVERYTHING about their lives. Look, I know, that is just what football is to a lot of people. Trust me, I know, I grew up in Texas myself. But I think if you analyze the main character( Mike Winchell), the movie portrays him sometimes as an unwilling participant. He's doing football mainly because of his mother and feels like its the only way out....but I would seriously doubt that he earnestly and completely LOVES it (football). There is even a scene in the movie where he talks to the coach about feeling "cursed." The speech assures them that winning the game is not what will make them a "perfect" person, but rather it's how they treat each other and other people AND how they live their lives after this moment. When he says that "forever is about to happen", he's not just talking about the game, he's talking THE REST OF THEIR LIVES. It's a turning point for a lot of them, because they realize that essentially life as they know it isn't "over" after this game, regardless if they win or lose. Highschool football does not necessarily have to be the peak of their lives. It can a memorable moment sure, but not by any stretch the absolute BEST or most IMPORTANT part of their lives.
@stephengrigg59887 жыл бұрын
yea that's basically the point of the movie. it's all bigger than football. some of the aged characters who had dead end lives and still bring up the high school championship missed out on life, and that's what the coach was stressing. I can't remember the characters name, but Tim McGraws' character ,imo, was the most interesting. he is so ridiculously hard on his son to the point of being borderline abusive, and his character does a 180° with his short speech. "you've got one year to make memories.." he was someone that peaked in high school and didn't want the same for his son, but maybe thought that was inevitable. he even showed signs of regret for his past, like how he just throws his ring out of the window. he was a tragic character who wasn't the best at raising a kid, yet he clearly loved his son and wanted him to go farther in life than him. fnl is a damn realistic film with its layered and nuanced characters

This speech is so, so good. It’s impressive how directly a Hollywood production was able to hit it on the head. You don’t realize it till it’s over, but this is gold. “Being perfect, is about being able to look your friends in the eye, and know, that you didn’t let them down, because you told them the truth. And that truth is that you did everything that you could - there wasn’t one more thing that you could’ve done. Can you live in that moment?” It gives me peace to know that at the end of my collegiate career, I can look back and honestly say that there wasn’t one more thing I could’ve done. I left it all out there, and I love this speech for giving me and everyone else who feels the same way something to hang their hat on.

I saw/heard a real variant of this speech. I was a practice assistant/equipment man for a very good HS team, and our team was getting their asses handed to them in the state championship game. Our d coordinator-who was more fiery than the HC-told the team “You have two more quarters in your football playing careers to go out and play the way you know you CAN. This is your last chance to do what you do best as a team”-and the team came out with their hair on fire and almost pulled off the comeback against a very good opponent. The script writers and Billy Bob Thornton both hit a home run, to mix sports metaphors lol….

15 years since my last snap as a High School Football Player.. 12 years since I played my last college game.. I miss these days.. Telling my sons and my nephews playing now don't regret these times cause you can't even have them back.. Just like Billingsly's dad was telling him.. My dad told me the same.. Never forget these days..

The score for the film adds so much to the scenes. I forget the name of the band but damn the clips of their songs hit perfectly. Love this friggin movie. We watched it as a team before our final playoff game which we lost. My last time on a football field in pads. 18 years later, feels like it was yesterday. Got all conference a few times. I could've played lower level college ball but after that game I knew it wasn't meant to be. Coach always said you'll never forget the smell of the grass. Summer two-a-days. Looking up at the stands with a couple thousand cheering for you. Your brothers who had your back. I have vivid memories going back to that time. I hope my kids get to experience what I did. I'll never forget those days.

This movie stirred so many emotions in my soul and like many guys who played in HS, I always remember that time of my life, and will do so until I pass. I remember the camps, the practices, games, wins and losses. I remember the team, the plays, the weather, the classes, the feelings, just everything!!! Nowadays I coach my two sons and I am having the time of my life - so are they. Enjoy the time. Thanks to the guys who made this film, it struck a chord.

My HS coach gave us this exact same speech 2 decades eariler

“there was nothing more you could’ve done…” - he didn’t ask them to play a perfect game he just asked them to do their very best… that’s the most realistic thing any coach can ask of all his players.

This speech is not about football. It is about being a Man and Love. This is how you live life.

Forever is about to happen November 1999 we may not have went to the playoffs but I just only played organized tackle football for only three seasons n that lone stint of varsity also for track. After that I hung it up for good. That's deep than most that never played sports especially high school football

Little known fact: Much of this speech was ad-libbed by Billy Bob Thorton. Apparently, he had been betrayed in real life by a life long friend the day before and he asked Pete Berg if he could go off script. Berg gave him the go ahead and this is the result....probably the best moment of the entire film.

I’m an Indian and 99.99% won’t have even heard about College Football but man I swear it feels like the best game ever. Been watching this movie since I was a kid and whenever I feel low, I watch it again and again for motivation. Such an underrated gem and honestly, I hope it stays that way.
