It may help to realize those snarky commenters are not on social media to learn or enjoy anything about sewing--they are damaged people trolling social media, looking to give themselves a temporary boost by diminishing others. It's not about you, or any other content creator--it's about them and their brokenness. And they seem to crop up everywhere. It feels so personal, but it's what they do with everyone. I enjoy all the sewing people I watch on KZbin and have learned a lot! One of the things I've learned is that there are a lot of terrific fabric shops where you are. I live in an area that seems to be lacking choices (New Mexico, US), but I think there are fewer independent fabric retailers in this country, and those that we do have are clustered in more metropolitan areas. So I get a vicarious kick out of seeing your hauls and then what you eventually do with them. Thanks!

Hi Rachel, I don’t always comment on videos I watch but wanted to say thank you for all you do for the sewing community. I’m sorry that you have received some negative comments. People can be very thoughtless. Please know that we love watching you and appreciate your makes and inspiration 🥰

I’m sorry you have received negative comments don’t let it get to you look at all the positive ones you get. I have lived in Australia for the last 10 years and look forward to your vlogs it’s like having a chat with a friend from home. I am very envious of your stash as the fabric choice here is not as expansive as the UK, although it is improving. Keep up the vlogs show all your fabrics and be proud of your makes the good, bad and the disappointments. Love you Liberty print.

This may be a new one for you: I don't sew. I used to make my clothes when I was younger, but no more. Yet I love your channel and am excited for each new video. I found your channel last December after searching KZbin for Vlogmas, just checking to see if anything interesting was about. I was hooked after watching one video, not because of sewing but because of you! You are genuine and unafraid of being who you are, and as you've just proved, you can politely kick butt.😉 Hope your dad is soon better!

You are so right! Negative comments serve no useful purpose and are not necessary. I watch for the positivity I get from youtubers, as well as the info about sewing. I enjoy your podcasts because they are always interesting, with fun fabrics (love the blue paisley btw). You are not negative, why should comments be?

First Rachel - I want to thank you for doing your vlogs. I always enjoy them. I really like seeing them and what you are making. The anonymity of social media has allowed people to make hurtful comments on various platforms which I totally dislike. It shows how ugly people can be. I am glad you spoke up. I agreed with what you said. For what it is worth, I think your fabric choices to make the skirt were just fine together. And once the skirt is made, I am sure it will look beautiful.

I had two fabrics in my basket from rainbow fabrics - the white brod anglaise and the blue and white linen jersey. Both of which you bought! I didn’t buy them - as no plans for them and I only got free postage and not 30% off! You lucky thing. I hope your Dad is improving in hospital. I saw the comments on your previous blog - I don’t get it either as I was brought up not to say unkind things - but nuances in the written word are difficult. Some people only look for the negatives. I applaud you for making You Tube content as even a few negative comments would feed into my mental health and add to those critical voices in my head. I know it’s easier said than done to ignore them but I’m sure 99.9% of people who watch you are supportive and appreciative of what you do.

Hi Rachel, Hope your Dad gets better soon! I wanted to say that I'm always amazed, at how much work goes into all the Vlogs the (You Tube) community put in. When the rest of us are just sitting back and enjoying the content that took a lot of your time. I'm sure it takes up lots of your sewing time to put a Vlog together. I just wanted to say how much the sewing community has helped lots of us through difficult times, Thank You! Love all your makes, and that you share even the things you felt weren't quite right. Love your taste in fabric, and I'm always a bit jealous of your Beautiful stash, just want to come over and touch all the fabric. I also wanted to say that I'm sure that I and many other people have watched all of your Live Sew_a_longs, and just couldn't comment when you were on, but really enjoyed them. Thanks so much for the time and effort you put in for all of us! Liz from South Florida ☀️😎

I know what you mean by sometimes we may write things that may not really be as harsh as inteneded. I love your vlogmas and what you say and do, and share with us. We all have to just remember, that one of the reasons we sew is so we can be as eccentric, crazy, or just be as we want!!!!!! I think your tierd skirt is going to be spectaucular. Don't let the others get you down. I have a bit of the crazy fabric choices that sometimes even surprise me!!!! Sometimes good, sometimes not so good. But I so enjoy the process!!!!!!! My first sewing project in 4-H was an apron. Even my mother gave me the impression that she was not quite sure my choice of fabric would work. Well, I recieved a blue ribbon and have just continued on with my slightly "off" fabric choices!!!!! So, embrace your wonderful creativty. Sorry I was so long winded!!!!

I don't normally comment but I felt the need to say, well said. There is one channel that I watch, I wouldn't wear what she makes but that's her style and I love watching her. There isn't any need for negative comments, if yoh don't like something, keep it to yourself or stop watching. Putting someone down if they haven't asked for an opinion is not healthy on that persons mental health. You have no idea what is going on in their lives. (You given me the encouragement to start my own vlog and I can not thank you enough for that. )I know that a lot of people say we should silence “the negativity “and not give these persons any acknowledgement and I completely agree but I think it is so important to do just what you did-address it and show that it does affect us and it is not ok. Thank you💕Take care and have a wonderful weekend (hope you dad is ok-it is so tough having a loved one suffer💕💕💕)/Elisabeth

I love your blogs and feel like I know you through them. Your discussion of the negative comments was eloquently put and very insightful. I too saw the comments and was astonished some people thought that was a useful thing to write. In fact I was one of the ones who put a positive comment to try and outweigh the negative ones, as I could imagine how disheartening it would have been to read those negative ones and wanted to do what I could to eradicate that feeling. I noticed that other people did the same thing as me. So many of us love what you do and can’t wait to see each of your videos when they appear. On a separate note - wow to the Beyond the Pink door fabric! I utterly love with that and really hope Andrea has it for sale at some point in the future!

Rachel, you have been my friend from the other side of the world ever since you started. Why some people choose to be negative to someone doing their best is quite beyond me. Sadly, not everyone is nice and fortunately they don’t form part of our real lives. You mentioned how someone focuses on the one thing that doesn’t appeal. Possibly that’s the last thing they see so they forget about what went before. Take no notice, they aren’t worth it. Love your work ❤️

Love your videos. I don't expect people to make exactly the same choices as me or have the same taste but I still love hearing about your decisions - it helps me work out fabric choices for the patterns I want to make and work out what I don't want to do and avoid mistakes. I find watching people who make different choices to me more inspiring - it's how I have new ideas. Just remember there are vastly more positive than negative reactions to what you do.

Loved how you addressed this issue, of course we sometimes think 'crikey I wouldn't have chosen that fabric or pattern or colour' but I watch vlogs to be entertained, stimulated, inspired and to see what works or doesn't. I make decisions about whether to go ahead with a plan or not based on vloggers experience and I am so grateful for the time and effort you guy's put into producing such great content. I totally get your confusion about why someone would pick out one aspect of a video which is your personal taste to criticize. Fair play to you for sticking at it.

Hi Rachael, I'm really sorry you've received negative comments from what I can only presume are negative people about your Sew Frugal challenge vlog. As you say in your vlog, peoples taste is theirs and theirs alone. I love your vlogs and watch them all. I don't feel your style is my style and that is fine as I am 63 and you are much younger and completely different shape, but what I do appreciate is your time and effort putting together a vlog to inspire others. Your choice of fabrics as with everyone's again is a personal choice but I am also inspired by your choices sometimes when I see the fabulous results you get and often which pushes me out of my sewing comfort zone. You sew such a beautiful and varied garments and have lots of different styles that if I miss a vlog and its mentioned on instagram I suffer greatly with fimo. 😍 You introduce new patterns and new fabric suppliers which we may never have heard of and which we can support the small independent suppliers. As my mum says, if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. I'm trying to put together a vlog with hubby and I know it is not easy when you are working full time in a pressurised job. Please keep up the good work and try not to take the occasional 'bad' comment overshadow all of the wonderful comments and love you get from this great community of like minded people.

Great vlog as always! I started sewing after I lost my mum 5 years ago, and I watched sewing vlogs, like yours, with discussions on fabrics, pattern reviews etc., and I just loved them. I have learned a lot from you, and seeing as none of my friends sew (and due to the pandemic, I have barely seen my friends anyway) it has felt so nice to belong to the community online. I am sorry that you have had negative comments. Making content online , and particularly when speaking directly into the camera, is an act that requires some bravery, and I can often feel a little vulnerable. I will never condone bad behaviour, but Ihonestly think that negative comments often are a result of thoughtlessness, rather than spite and malice. It’s a result of the immediate impression, and the ease and speed of posting, I think. And I also think that people who don’t make videos themselves have NO idea how much time and work it takes. I am glad you address this, Rachel. We all need a reminder sometimes. Love your fabrics, btw. The Libery is stunning! And I think the True bias southport dress would be a great choice for the Think Pink viscose. (Oh, or maybe the True Bias Maven skirt? That would be lovely, too..) Thank you for vlogging - I really appreciate your frank and open style!

Rachel, I always enjoy your videos and I'm grateful that you put so much effort into putting them together. It's such a shame that people occasionally make negative remarks. It's very rude and hurtful.

You addressed the comment issue so tactfully, I agree, I watch for entertainment and appreciation of your artistic vision. It is in poor taste to comment on someone else's plans and personal decisions that are suited to them. I enjoy your videos and the work you put into them :)

Lovely vlog and I love your jumper its really nice. Negativity is awful and I think some people relish in it just to be awkward. I think you are a really nice person and best to scroll on by them. I also loved your pattern of the Trina dress but like you said you move and all pops out. I have just ordered it from the Fold Line girls in A0 coz Im hopeless at PDF. I am going to try and hack the front somehow. Also I use an online fabric shop called Shriya Fabrics its a facebook group. He has some nice viscose on their and very very reasonable. He has Indian fabrics as well. Very helpful too. You may not like anything but its worth a look. Please keep your vlogs coming. Thank you Rachel xx

I purchased the same liberty fabric Rachel, as I was the same - loved it. Not sure what I’m making yet but think Paddington would be lovely. X

I’m sorry that you’ve received negative comments, I personally look forward to seeing yours and others sewing vlogs. Respect costs nothing but speaks volumes. Please don’t let the negativity get you down, the majority of your followers respect your style and choices and are thankful for your vlogs. I was lucky enough to get one of Andrea & Cerys’ boxes so can’t wait to see what you make. I hope your dad is ok and gets well soon x

I’m sorry to hear about the negativity. I wish I had your stash to pick from. I always enjoy seeing your fabric hauls and can appreciate the beauty of all the fabrics even if not to my taste or would not suit me. I certainly would not give my opinion unless it was a positive one. Please keep up the great work as the vast majority of your viewers really appreciate the work that you put into your vlogs. Hope you didn’t mind the teasing on the Ruan and Sam vlogs, it was done with good natured intention and not intended to be nasty ❤️

They are a business! Don’t feel bad for purchasing the box. Success isn’t a curse. This is awesome Andrea has a fantastic product. Believe me, no one wanting to buy it would be bad, worse.

I really appreciate your vlogs and get inspired to try different patterns. I am sad you have been trolled we.all have different tastes. I love my BTPD fabric too I cannot believe how lucky I was to get a box. I hope they continued to do the boxes even it it is bimonthly or quarterly.

How frustrating for you to have negative vibes. Your recent fabric choices for sewfrugal were not my cup of tea but I am very excited to see the final result as I know you will make it look brilliant. And that in turn might introduce me to something I haven’t been brave enough to consider or try myself. I love your videos and between you and a myriad of other sewing bloggers it has reawakened my love of sewing. Please keep up the excellent work.
