Humans introduce variance in socio-technical systems due to their diverse behaviors, decisions, and preferences, making these systems inherently unpredictable. This variance can be messy but human coupled systems modeling or socio-technical modeling allows us to quantify and apply this variance, enhancing our understanding of complex systems and enabling more effective decision-making in domains like water and energy management. This presentation covers mixed method approaches for integrating human behavior in socio-technical modeling.
