I agree with your take, Ken. The 4K is vastly superior to the BluRay. I was wowed by the natural presentation, incredible detail, and rich color. I’m not even sure the 4K is too dark. The darkness in nighttime scenes seems appropriate to me. Nice, deep blacks that only enhance the mood. The 4K is superb!

To be honest, the Scream blu and the 4k offer interesting alternate viewing experiences and it’s worth having both for a Friday fan. I like the colors on the shout blu, but I like the moodiness of the darker print. The coolest thing about the 4k transfer is the flashlights actually light up the areas the characters are in.

I am not a fan of shout factory transfers. They are bright and too warm& saturated. But I'm not sold on the 4k also. The black looks crushing. Will have to check the 4k 4 myself.

Hey Ken, I pre-ordered the fog and Friday the 13th and I receive them the Saturday before the release on Tuesday watch them back to back I thought both of them look better then I’d ever seen them before but out of the two I thought Friday the 13th look the best. I think it checked all the 4K boxes nice natural color that pops when appropriate great specular highlights the chrome on the bumper of the truck the reflection of the water on the side of the Dock headlights flashlight look great. As far as the blacks I thought they were spot on dark and inky. I couldn’t be happier with this release pleasantly surprised have a great one👍

I like it better than the Blu-ray. I don’t like the absence of grain and the clean look you’re praising. I don’t know if the lack of grain is from DNR or over-saturation of color in the HDR grading. It’s a shame though, I love a fine film grain especially on old films. Looks great otherwise. Skin tones are more natural, better black levels, etc. 17:49 you can always watch your digital copy, it will downscale to 1080p.

Yeah I have to say the grain looks more like noise in this release. It's supposed to add detail but it's almost scrubbed. It's just nowhere near the quality of other Paramount releases I have. I still say the HDR is botched, some of the skin tones look off and they changed the intro fade from white to black. I mean if people are happy with this then that's fine for them but we shouldn't encourage transfers like this that not only alter the film but bury any detail or gradation.

I feel like Dolby Vision grading often darkens the picture a bit, usually making the picture more realistic. I think many people want pop and punch and bright, but that's not always actually accurate or what is best. It's like people watching movies in "Vivid" mode because it's brighter, not realising the colors are blown out as all hell. That being said, I have yet to watch this disc.

How does the transition to the credits look? You know, before the credits in the first few minutes of the movie, where the girl is killed and she's basically in still frame, the picture is supposed to grow white and the credits appear. Did this 4K actually fade to black instead? That's what I have heard.

I agree completely with the HDR comments. Yes, it's dark but the very natural and feels like what it would feel like if you were in those scenes in real life. If you are in a cabin and the only light is coming from the windows, you're not going to really be able to make out much anything in the room. HDR is just going to bring that out.

Same scan done by paramount. Only difference is 4K disc and no original audio or separate disc for the theatrical cut. Shout did some work on the scan but that’s it.

It's the same scan but they botched the HDR on this release and apparently used DNR. Film grain isn't as fine as other releases like Beverly Hills Cop II.

Great review Ken gonna hit Best Buy tmrw for an in person slipcase. I have a feeling it will shine in Dolby on my setup. Folks need to understand that Dolby Vision is greater that standard HDR. Most of the time transfers will look better in Dolby. This sounds like a natural filmic transfer. Thanks Ken for the review.

I think arrogance got the best of me and I should have stated that in my experience, 98 percent of the time the Dolby Vision encode is better than standard hdr. I just finished watching the 4k transfer of this on my oled with the gold standard ub820 player. What I can say is that in my experience I enjoyed the transfer. It’s a very interesting Dolby pass. 80- 85 percent of the time I found the transfer to be very very good. There were some shots that were a little too hot and some of the darker scenes were perhaps 1/3-1 stop under. In Interior scenes where it wasn’t quite night time, it was almost just right - there was detail outside the window, but the dark faces were almost there if only maybe they could’ve opened up 1/4 - 1/2 stop up. The night time scenes I felt were mostly good. They reminded me of nighttime in jaws or close encounters except here perhaps they were 1/3 stop down in some cases. Some of the detail in daytime scenes as on closeups were terrific. I wonder if whoever graded this did some scenes just right and left it to some type of computer automation to guess other scenes to make them almost correct but not quite. This is not a terrible transfer by any means, I would give the transfer between 4 and 41/4 stars. The film has a certain slickness to it that’s why I mentioned jaws and close encounters. And perhaps that is a problem for some. I am reminded of the Shout Halloween vs the standard Halloween 4ks; does one prefer more contrast and slickness on shout vs darker and granier standard release? The bigger issue is no original audio although I will say that the center and dialogue were very clear and the Hermanesque/ Hitchcockian score came in nicely. I will be on the lookout here in Hollywood for a film print screening to compare. Every physical media KZbinr has different TV setups with different video settings so we can’t always be so positive about the reviews of the differences between a Blu-ray and 4K. They could be using the “wrong” color temperature or using a setting other than Filmmaker mode/Custom, etc that depicts the creators’ original intent.

I saw two videos that bashed this release, but one reviewer said he watched it on a hisense TV and the other didn't mention his TV, but was comparing images via pictures from his cell phone. I disregarded both reviews. This is the second positive I've seen and I'm ready to open my 4K copy (i was holding on to return if it didn't offer anything more than the shout factory disc).

I have a mid-level 4K TV and watched it on my Xbox One X and it looked fine to me. The HDR adds a level of richness and returns the picture to that dark feel of watching it in the theater. Ever since the movie has been remastered and enhanced on digital formats, the special effects have suffered. They looked gray and fake. This release fixed most of that. Sure, there are a few instances of black crush in the opening and some film grain right at the beginning, but I rarely noticed it.

Here’s the thing you really need a display that does not tone map the film overall. Yes it is dark but not too dark I have both an OLED C1 and Sony Z9J and yes the C1 does blacks well but since the movie is mastered at 1000 nits max CLL and APL is between 997 and 960 in HDR and a bit higher in Dolby Vision. But the main thing on my Z9J it does not need to tone map so dark scenes stay dark but highlights are very impactful even low light. When viewing it on my LG c1 yea it is perfect blacks but the hdr highlights are not as impactful as the Z9J so hdr highlights don’t grab you as much and give you that dynamic pop that can make dark scenes not as dark. What I mean hdr highlights that are not tone mapped give you enough illumination due to the scene being shot so it doesn’t look that dark. And before anyone says we’ll because of the LEDLCD giving you that glow due to the back lighting Nope the Z9J are not OLED black but they are black and when the hdr highlight from a flashlight and or light bulb and gas lamp illuminates it really brings out the dynamic range of the film over my OLED. Since the HDR highlights are not as bright it makes the darker scenes less dynamic it make it look darker.

I really want to pick this up but over the past while the bigger horror franchises keep being released in ways that rip the customer off. Halloween & F13 they have a habit of releasing the first few and then the rest only in a box set. So you're repurchasing the first few twice. F13 is my favorite horror franchise as well but the Shout Boxset will have to suffice until I see how Paramount or Shout plan to release the entire franchise on UHD.

You definitely haven't searched out more reviews then. There are just as much positive reviews as bad reviews. The opinion's on this release are all over the place. It all comes down to what YOU prefer look wise. The 4k vs the Bluray are very different looking and both have pros and cons. I have both and watched/compared both on my 77inch OLED. I like both for different reasons and am glad to have both in my library:)

This 100%. Revisionism and brightness levels aside, the encoding on recent Paramount titles has been nothing but a catastrophe and reviewers should point this fact out. It's a travesty when you have worse compression on UHDs when you compare them to their Shout 1080p counterparts or even Paramount's Remastered in 4k 1080p counterparts (Fatal Attraction and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance). In a perfect world, big studios would release their UHDs like Arrow (who works with FiM): Nearly flawless compression. But as long as reviewers keep singing praises, things will never change.

@@VIDEOgameDROME, that really irks me. I can handle a slightly dark transfer, but messing with the actual content of films is wrong. Some would say this is a minor issue, but I disagree. It’s alarming.

I just watched it. The day scenes are amazing. However, the night scenes are way too dark. I think part of that though, is my equipment. I kind of like some of the darkness too…feels like you are there. It doesn’t much matter though…I’ve seen this a ton of times, so I’m not missing anything.

Just my taste, but some movies loose their personality/charm when there is too much clarity. This and other early cheap 80’s horror films look best, IMO, grittier which is lost with 4K.

I disagree about Friday The 13th franchise never quite reaching the highs of the Halloween, Nightmare On Elm Street, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchises! It exceeds them all in my opinion! The only franchise that can challenge it is Halloween. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise is just plain awful! The only good one in that franchise IS the first one!!
