The hockey mask in this film has blue markings on it instead of red ones, foreshadowing that the real killer isn't Jason at all. The hockey mask used during the opening title sequence is of a different style, with different markings, than the hockey mask used in parts III and IV. This is a prophetic clue to the viewer that the man behind the mask is an imposter. Although "Part V" appears on all promotional material, it does not appear in the actual film. The opening credits simply read: "Friday the 13th: A New Beginning." This is the first film in the series where Jason is actually referred to by his full name: Jason Voorhees. In Friday the 13th (1980), Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981), and Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984), he is only referred to as Jason, while he is not referred to by name at all in Friday the 13th Part III (1982). Coincidentally, Deborah Voorhees shares her real surname with Jason.

Eddie (the guy that was killed after banging the chick with the leather strap) was one of my friends' dads when I was little. I used to go to his house all the time, and of course I didn't know he was in a movie. They moved away pretty early on in my life, but a few years ago, my friend came back to Idaho from California (where they moved), and we were hanging out, and I told him about how I loved the Friday the 13th movies, and out of nowhere, he says "my dad was in one of those movies." Obviously my first reaction is that he's full of shit, but after looking into it, I found out it was no bullshit. All this time, he'd been in a fairly big movie, and I didn't know jack shit about it!

People don't give Roy and Part 5 enough credit, its like the Halloween 3 of the series. I get SOME of the hate; fair enough he's not Jason; but come on Roy was a beast with how much damage he took despite not being Jason and how many kills he got and Part 5 has some of the best kills in the entire franchise. Nah because even though Jason isn't the killer Part V is still about the lore of Jason what with Roy copying him and Tommy still being affected by Jason killing his mother and friends and trying to kill him and his sister. Even the sheriff thinks Jason has come back and is killing again before it's revealed that Roy's doing the killing. Whereas Halloween 3 has nothing to do with Michael Myers whatsoever.

Roy might be a fake-ass Jason, but I've actually grown a bit of an appreciation for him, sorta how Halloween III has gained more respect over the years. Like that movie, you admire that A New Beginning tried to move on from Jason and try something else, though it doesn't go anywhere near as far to divorce itself away from the previous films like Halloween III did with its magic murder masks plot. Granted, Roy's son getting killed over a goddamn chocolate bar was beyond ridiculous, and Roy doesn't seem to be targeting any of the kids in the halfway house. But still, points for trying to bring in a new killer.

This is a bad argument though. Part 1 was literally the beginning of the series and had no intent to have Jason as the main villain. By part 5, Jason had been the main killer for 3 straight movies. And even then, people would have been ok had they just pulled the trigger and let Tommy be the new killer. Instead they used both familiar characters as a red herring to give us a random guy who popped up once and tried to give a weak motivation that makes 0 sense. Also it makes no sense for Roy to survive those hits he took if he wasn't Jason. It's just overall bad writing.

I like how this Tommy Jarvis or Billy from the Power Rangers, the Blue Ranger, literally had them moves of a Power Ranger, beating the shit out of that hillbilly guy, beats up that one dude when they're all eating breakfast. I think the shoddy effects work, the MPAA raping what good effects there were, and the general trashy feel of this film work against it more than Roy. The idea of a copycat killer is both realistic and interesting and might have worked in a better movie.

WWAM after watching the original Friday The 13th: "This movie sucks! Where's Jason? This movie is supposed to be about Jason killing people! When I watch a Friday The 13th movie, I expect to see Jason, wearing a hockey mask, killing people with a machete. Not some crazy old woman who thinks that she's Jason, who's not even wearing a freaking hockey mask!" That's what you guys sound like when you talk about Friday The 13th Part V: A New Beginning. Was the movie bad? Yes. Is the reason why it was bad because Jason wasn't the killer? No! There's a lot more that's wrong with the movie that makes it one of the worst of the franchise. There are too many kills, for one thing. With so many kills, there's no time to build any suspense. Without any suspense being built, the kills are meaningless. There's also no time spent on any character development, especially with the core group of victims. If we don't know anything about the victims, then why should we care when they die? The movie made it way too obvious that Roy was the killer early on in the movie. I've actually rewritten the screenplay for this movie, fixing a lot of what was wrong with the theatrical release. It's available to be read on fanfiction.net. Anyway, my point is that the name of the franchise is Friday The 13th, not Jason. You don't need Jason to be the killer in order to have a Friday The 13th movie. After all, he wasn't the killer in the first one. Was he?
