A few weeks ago, an interview with atmospheric scientist András Gelencsér caused a big stir in the pages of the online newspaper 24.hu. In it, the professor claimed that "unbridled growth and prosperity will end by 2040 at the latest and modern civilisation will be in a serious crisis", because climate change is already unstoppable, there are not enough energy and raw material resources to make the transition to sustainable systems, and the supplies needed for consumption are running out. Therefore, our way of life as Western civilisation has at most two decades left and there is not enough time to make the transition.
András Gelencsér's statements have been challenged by many scientists, including Miklós Antal, a physicist and researcher in ecological economics, who in a separate article has sought to refute the MTA doctor's summary statements, which he argues are based on a complex system, in a system as complex as human civilisation, there are many uncertainties that are impossible to account for, and if someone does not mention risks and makes statements that are not probabilistic, it is only private opinion, but does not stand the test of science.
In this edition of the Friderikusz Podcast, we bring together the debating parties to clash their views. In that sense, this is an experimental show.
