Having grown up in the Southern US where this is a favorite dish, fried green tomatoes are really tasty when done right. Being green, they're hard and sour when fresh, but with frying they develop a very nice sweet, tangy flavor. And they're not as juicy as they are after they ripen, which keeps them from being too watery in the hot oil. The hard tomato, softened and sweetened by cooking, covered in a crunchy crust of flour, breadcrumbs, corn meal, eggs and milk, seasoned to taste, deep fried until golden brown. Good stuff!

In a 2021 interview Mary Stuart Masterson talked about the honey bee scene: "I was just supposed to walk over and get the honeycomb and bring it back to camera. We did what's called a series where you don't cut, you just keep rolling and you set back to 1 and you do it [again]. So, I did that three times and by the third time, I was so covered in bees I couldn't even see. It looked silly like you know the bearded lady with the bee beard." The director yelled, "CUT" and the bee expert wafted Masterson with smoke and told her to walk away. "I walked away really slowly and the bees weren't going anywhere and he kept putting more and more smoke and was like 'ok walk a little faster, okay RUN!' And then I jumped into a car, took my shirt off that had the queen bee pheromone on it. Drove away. Put on another shirt, came back and did it three more times." Masterson noted that this the last major scene she shot for the entire movie, "Not by accident. You know in case I died or something,"

I'm a Southern lesbian, and this is one of my favorite movies of all-time! The book is explicitly lesbian, but they couldn't get that past studio censorship, so their entire actual relationship is subtext. Fried green tomatoes (the food) are soooo good, especially with a remoulade sauce. I highly recommend them. They're a Southern staple!

Encouraging women to look at their own vaginas was definitely a thing with the feminist movement. So many women were taught to be ashamed of their lady bits and lived in total ignorance of how their own bodies worked, this was part of body positivity and the like. It may seem weird but honestly it's a good idea.

I have always loved this movie! A few years back I read the book, which is also great. It focuses more on the whole town of Whistlestop as it slowly dies and decays, which was really interesting. It made sense for the movie to move the focus to Idgie and Ruth so they wouldn’t have to juggle so many storylines. It’s too bad the movie smoothes over their loving relationship, and how Idgie was just generally regarded by the town as a man. I also don’t like the movie insinuating that Mz Threadgoode might actually be Idgie. I do like that they gave Ruth a lot more to do as a character, so we could love her and properly mourn her death.

Yes, an experienced bee person can very carefully reach into a hive. Growing up, my family had a bee barn where hives were stored for the winter (easier for them to manage temperatures). We'd go into the barn without protection as they won't sting unless threatened, i.e., get under a hat, shirtsleeve, or pant leg. Also had hives in the back yard here in Seattle and would put on cookouts next to the hives and watch them fly out to get nectar and return home. Nobody got stung. Don't try it if you may be allergic or had a bad reaction to a bee sting.

Yes, fried green tomatoes are a tradition in the Southeastern United States. I’m from Georgia and they were pretty common in rural communities when I was growing up in the 70s/80s. I hated them when I was a child but as an adult, I absolutely love them now if they are made right. I have live in Chicago for the past 25 years and they have spread outside the south to other parts of the country and are can be found as an appetizer/side dish in a lot of places. This movie came out after I moved away from home and it always gives me nostalgic vibes even though it’s setting is a few decades before me. People still tell folk tales like this to this day. Edit: Fun fact - tomatoes are slightly toxic when green but the heat from cooking breaks down the toxins so they are safe. Edit 2: I should finish watching before I comment 😅 The town Idgie drove to, Valdosta, GA is next to my home town. We used to play football against them when I was in high school.

Bees (most) respond to emotional states. Fear and anger make them aggressive. They don't mind chill people, generally. I had to talk to a cluster of bees gathering to build a hive. I told them that if they didn't move from their present location that the humans would kill them. I said my piece and I was becoming upset, thinking that they might not understand and they began to get agitated. I apologized to them and left that rooftop. They had been there for 4 days. The next day they were gone.

Just so you know, fried green tomatoes are ridiculously easy to make. Firm unripened tomatoes, egg, milk, cornmeal (or crackermeal or bread crumbs), salt, pepper, and cooking oil for frying (more than enough to cover the pan bottom, but not so much you're deep-frying; laying in oil but not floating in it). So many cultural differences for a Belgian to navigate in this film. There's the Deep South, which is as cloying a culture as is its humidity. There's the Depression, during which Idgie would ride food-filled boxcars so she could toss food out to the shanty-towns set up by the side of the tracks. There's the belief, still held by southern men that men were kings in their households and women were servants meant to obey them (it's biblical-based, and currently conservatives are trying to bring that back). And the KKK... This was the period when veterans of the US Civil War were dying off, so a lot of civic/social groups (made up entirely of white bigots) collected donations and set up statues to commemorate their Confederate 'heroes'. They weren't set up by political groups, but by Confederate veterans organizations and groups like the Daughters of the Confederacy. Then there's the 'present day' in the film, of around the 1970s. Women's Lib is leading women to find their spines, discover their sexuality, even examine their external parts 'down there'. If you google things like the artist Judy Chicago, you see some of what I mean. Evelyn comes to find her power, not by going to these feminism meetings, but through Ninny's stories. Ninny seems like just a sweet old lady, but she is a warrior, bold as brass & determined to live life on her own terms. She becomes a role model for Evelyn. Oh, and yeah. They cooked & served up Frank. "The secret's in the sauce..." That black woman in the background (Sipsey) was Cecily Tyson, who was 67 when she acted in this movie. Among her awards are an Oscar, 3 Emmies, and a Tony. The final thing secret (and probably some will argue this point) is that Idgey & Ruth were lovers. It was clear from the beginning, when Idgey as a child hated wearing dresses, that she was butch and gravitated to butch things. The child Ninny spoke of having was Buddy Jr; she never said she was pregnant or gave birth, just that she had a child. And she (as Idgey) refused to marry. The note on Ruth's grave was fresh, just placed that morning; weather had not gotten to it and wind had not blown it away. The wild honey was fresh, in a clean jar, unspattered by mud and clear of dust.

The old lady is actress Jessica Tandy, who won an Oscar for Best Actress in 1989 for the movie "Driving Miss Daisy", and she was also in Hitchcock's 1963 masterpiece "The Birds" Evelyn is played by Kathy Bates, known for this, Misery, and American Horror Story among many others. Idgie is player by Mary Stuart Masterson, known to a lot of people from the movie "Some Kind Of Wonderful" from 1987 And Ruth is played by Mary-Louise Parker, who won an Emmy for the show "Weeds"! This is one of her early roles but she was also great in 1994's "The Client", and 1995's "Boys On The Side" which co-starred Whoopi Goldberg and Drew Barrymore, and has a similar story of friendship like Fried Green Tomatoes does.

Yes, fried green tomatoes are very good. I haven't had them in years though because I don't like to cook, well fry anyway. My mom and grandma used to make them all the time while I was growing up.

Great movie. For something else light and with some laughs you might enjoy "Groundhog Day" with Bill Murray from the 1990s. A lot to react to and very enjoyable.

It's no surprise that you've never eaten or even heard of these before. My understanding is that it's a dish that's pretty much only ever made in the (U.S.) South.

Two movies featuring Mary Stuart Masterson (Idgie) I think you would enjoy are "Some Kind Of Wonderful" and "Benny and Joon". (Side note...I know you will enjoy them 8^). So far your the second person I've seen review this movie the other being Awkward Ashliegh. In both instances y'all had my eyes leaking. Didn't cry when I saw it way back when but then again I was around 16 years old and there was no way I was gonna cry at a movie. 33 years later however...you apparently become more emotional... Also I was sooooo in love with Mary Stuart.... back then. Glad you enjoyed it and were so touched by it. It is certainly a classic.

It's a wonderful movie. My mom suggested we watch it together one day, some time after I had come out as lesbian to her, and I immediately fell in love with it. (And with Idgie, of course. How could you not.)

United States southerner here, who has been following you for a hot second. A fried green tomato is similar enough to fried pickles to make a comparison. If that helps!

Thomas Newman composed the wonderful score for this movie. But in general if you are looking for a great movie the trick is to look at who wrote the score. And for this time period if the soundtrack is composed by either James Horner, Thomas Newman, John Williams, John Barry or Hans Zimmer, odds are the movie attached to it will be remarkable.

Just so you know, FRIED GREEN TOMATOES ARE AWESOME. The hardest part of making them is finding them green. They have to be green because red ones just melt away when cooked.

You use green tomatoes for frying because ripe red tomatoes are too soft and would fall apart. If you ever get a green one, slice it up, just beat an egg, dip the slices in the raw egg, then cover them in flour or cornmeal, and fry them in oil until brown. Then just put some spices you like on them and eat. Pretty simple. They're pretty good.

There's also green tomato pickle which is delicious, especially on toast. The law was different back in the 30s. Women were counted with goods and chattel; thus property. Rape and assault in marriage was not recognised as crimes. It changed at different times in different countries and various jurisdictions. My late wife's first husband used to beat her up whenever he felt like it - usually when he was drunk. She was determined her children would not be brought up in such an environment and left him. A lot of damage had been done and there are still consequences. This was in the late 60s and there was no support from the government. She had to work no matter what. "Fried Green Tomatoes" was one of her favourite movies. We were married for over 30 years. She died almost three years ago from cancer and she's sorely missed all the time.

One of my top 10. 💗 I grew up sitting on my mother and many grandmothers counters waiting for the fried green tomatoes to cool off enough to get them in my mouth. 😆🍅💘 The Whistle Stop Cafe is really a place here in Alabama.

Most people who make fried green tomatoes (at least around me growing up) did so with tomatoes from their own gardens because you can’t really find unripe tomatoes in stores. But you should definitely try them if you get the chance!
So Cute 🥰 who is better?
