If your a reader you should read the book. Author is Fannie Flagg: Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe. Because this movie was made in the 80/90’s the movie had to be queer coded in order to be a commercial success. Queer coding was huge back then. The Color Purple and Fried Green Tomatoes being huge examples of this. Watch the Celluloid Closet for the history of queer representation in movies. They are in a lesbian relationship and this is a lesbian movie/story. In the book their relationship isn’t a question or implied, they are partners. This movie meant a lot to us queer folk back in the day.

Spiritdancer36-With FRIED GREEN TOMATOES, it was extremely frustrating being a lesbian & seeing the hinting that Idgie & Ruth were together, having read the book. I don't know if you have read the book or seen the movie TELL IT TO THE BEES. Anna Paquin is in the movie. Book & movie are night & day. I loved the book. I was disappointed with the movie. I did see that documentary THE CELLULOID CLOSET. it was quite interesting. Anyway, I liked what you said, & without reading your comment 1st actually mentioned something similar.🙂

Such a pity the lesbian relation couldn't be better represented; sealed by a/some kisse(s). I belief one of the or perhaps the first lesbian movie that did make it to the mainstream cinema was Desert Hearts ? Also a beatiful movie and worth to watch. Regards from the Netherlands!

@@FredtheFrisian, Desert Hearts was also the 1st lesbian movie I'd ever seen. It is a wonderful movie & definitely worth a watch. It was made in the mid 80's I believe, but not sure if it made it to all theaters, or if it just went to select theaters. The book of the same name is also a good read although it's somewhat different from the movie. I believe the author is Jane Rule, anyway the movie shows what book it's adapted from & author in the opening credits.

One of my favorite things about this movie is that at the start, a lot of people probably assume that the story in the past is going to be the whole movie, and Evelyn is just a simple plot device for us to hear it. But instead it keeps going back to her and letting us see how the story increases her pride and confidence. And of course this is especially gratifying for being Kathy Bates' immediate next role after her Oscar win for Misery, showing a completely different kind of character done just as well.

I can’t believe this wasn’t said… The bee scene was supposed to be done with a stunt double from long angles, but at the last minute the stunt double backed out. No other doubles were available. Director looked at Mary Stuart Masterson and asked if she thought she could do it, and MSM rose to the challenge!! Also, this movie was the first to feature 2 back-to-back Best Actress Oscar Winners with Jessica Tandy (Driving Miss Daisy) and Kathy Bates (Misery).

From the book: After supper, Ruth went into the parlor with Momma and Poppa and closed the door. She sat across from them with her hands in her lap, and began, “I don’t have any money, I really don’t have anything but my clothes. But I can work. I want you both to know that I’ll never leave again. I should never have left her four years ago, I know that now. But I’m going to try and make it up to her and never hurt her again. You have my word on that.”Poppa, who was embarrassed at any sort of sentiment, shifted in his chair. “Well, I hope you’re aware of what you’re in for. Idgie’s a handful, you know.” Momma shushed him. “Oh Poppa, Ruth knows that. Don’t you, dear? It’s just that she has a wild streak…Sipsey says it’s because I ate wild game when I was carrying Idgie. Remember, Poppa, you and the boys brought home some quail and wild turkeys that year?” “Mother, you have eaten wild game every year of your life.” “Well, that’s true, too. Anyhow, that’s beside the point. Poppa and I just want you to know that we think of you as one of the family now, and we couldn’t be happier for our little girl to have such a sweet companion as you.” It’s hard to fathom that sort of acceptance today.

@@himwhoisnottobenamed5427 that’s what I’ve always wondered about. It was before my time but my mother in law who grew up in a similar small town in Texas and who actually introduced me to the book said that wouldn’t have been so unusual. She spoke of single women she knew who lived together. She was too young to question why but they were as much a part of the community as anyone else. That doesn’t mean they were a couple of course. But no one felt any need to question them either. I wonder (I certainly don’t know) if folks where more committed to the idea of personal privacy then. At least as extended to other white folks. I admit my rose colored perspective falls apart when the race question comes up.

You should try fried green tomatoes. They’re delicious! It’s not like biting into a raw tomato. As I child, these subtle gay relationships went straight, no pun, over my head. I just thought that this is what strong female friendships looked like. I like this type of representation because it’s very sweet, even though it excludes a major component of a romantic relationship. It just has a purity to it.

Yeah the sexual relationship between Idgy and Ruth was a lot more explicit in the book. Kind of like in the color purple (the book) the sexual relationship between Shug and Celie. Alice Walker was actually upset at Steven Spielberg for shying away from it in the movie. But Steven Spielberg said he didn’t feel like he was the right one to tell that story. Which is kind of weird because he felt comfortable telling the story of the color purple and he wasn’t black? But ultimately Alice walker felt that it was not the worst decision because it became more about the innocence of love. And that in the end it didn’t necessarily mean that nothing sexual happened between them. Anyway both books are great and definitely worth reading!

When asked about her inspiration to write Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe, author Fannie Flagg said, "After my parents died, I went home and rode around Irondale and saw that the old café was falling down, and it broke my heart. I wanted to bring that café back to life and put people back in it. That might be why I wrote it."

The book also never explicitly states that Ruth and Idgie are lesbians, but it is very obvious. The only reason it isn't explicitly stated is because of the time period it came out. The 90s still weren't the best for LGBTQA+, but this movie did win a GLAAD award and it is common knowledge that the main characters are romantic partners. The cooking scene is pretty much a symbolic sex scene. So while it isn't ever said, everybody knows. Them girls be gay af

There was meant to be a stunt double for Mary Stuart Masterson when Idgie gets the honey from the hive. The double backed out so she did it herself. That was one of the last scenes filmed because it was so dangerous and there was a possibility of her dying if she accidentally agitated the bees and triggered all of them to sting. In the book, they were a couple, and everyone knew it. The filmmakers wanted to cut out the romance but the actresses tried to convey it anyway, it's subtle but it's there. Honestly would've been a better movie if they were less subtle about it, I don't think it would have hurt it at the box office (I saw it in theaters, we weren't *that* ass-backwards in the 80s, lol). Also in the book, Mrs. Threadgood is not Idgy, she was married to one of Idgy's brothers. Love this film, glad you enjoyed it.

I watched this movie the first time when I was 10 at a slumber party and I kept telling my friends they were together and they were all like "They're just friends!" lol. I now understand why it jumped out to me, it was the first time I saw a relationship between two women shown in a positive light(I grew up in the most conservative part of the most conservative part of Texas...so yeah being gay felt like the end of the world to me as a kid) and even then before I knew I was gay, it brought me comfort. I keep thinking I need to read the book! Loved your reaction!

The fact that Ruth used a passage from Ruth to send to Idgie is amazing because in the book of Ruth, the Hebrew word used to describe Ruth and Naomi's relationship was the same word used to describe Adam and Eve's relationship and Naomi adopts Ruth and Boaz's baby as her own. The queer story is using a queer story!

One thing I've always found really weird about this movie is how much it just glosses over their feeding Frank to the whole town. Now, few things irritate me more than when a story wimps out on a despicable character's comeuppance, so I'm perfectly fine with that part, but it's just bizarre how they seem to think nothing of making a whole bunch of innocent people into unwitting cannibals.

I feel it's just part of the comic relief of the movie, honestly After a lot of kinda intense feelings of grief and loss throughout the movie, I feel ending it with that was pretty great

I saw this movie at a afternoon screening before it came out. I was paid $5 and, after there was questions about what we thought of it. Everyone said don’t change a thing. You knew you were in for an emotional ride when they handed out travel Kleenex as you entered the theater. BTW, fried green tomatoes are delicious but, you can only eat a couple because of the tangy.

8:40 "She's _gotta_ be gay. She's gotta be _gay."_ You know, I haven't read the book this movie is based on, but as I understand it, there _was_ a note of 53xual chemistry in the _food_ fight. They deliberately made the food fight in the movie _different._

Fannie Flagg, who wrote the book, is a lesbian herself and wrote the book explicitly gay. She also had a cameo in this film (as well as being in another 80s film, My Best Friend is a Vampire). When this first came out, I never made it past the beginning into the meat of the story. I thought it was going to be really boring, and even though my sister and step-mother loved it, I didn't understand why. But a few years later when I was in college, I finally watched it in its entirety and then promptly went to my local feminist book store to buy the book. Great film. Even better book. And definitely part of the LGBTQ+ canon. Glad you enjoyed it!

I really liked your reaction.! I saw this movie ages ago and have watched it numerous times. I purchased the audio version of the book by Fanny Flagg ( who had a cameo in the movie as the group therapy leader) In the book the story extends to "little " Buddy's life. I am pretty sure that Ninny Thredgood is not Idgy ... Ninny married Theo Tredgood, she was Idgy's sister in-law...

Idgie will forever be the 1920s lesbian queen of my heart. It was rare for us small girls who had an idea we were not straight to have a fictional queer woman represented so beautifully in the early 90s. That actress could definitely get it, if she wanted to.
