TRUE FACT....A stunt double was hired to do the Bee scene but didn't show. So Mary Stewart Masterson (Iggy) actually did that scene herself. This movie is one of the best movies ever made. So many stories within ONE movie.

At the wedding scene, mama Threadgoode says “Imogene Louise Threadgood, this is your mama”. Idgie is short for Imogene. The book is a much larger story. A really good story about southern life in the depression. There’s much more about Big George’s family that I wish they could have told in the movie but they focused on Idgie and Ruth’s and Ninny and Evelyn’s story.

And Ruth said: "Whither thou goest, I will go. Where thou lodgest, I will lodge. Thy people shall be my people." - this was the Bible verse Ruth send Idgie telling her she would be her partner in life if she came to get her. The lesbian aspects are often very subtle to those not LGB+, but I recognized it immediately being lesbian myself. The book goes much more into this aspect of their relationship. Yes, they _were_ friends for life. And soulmates.

When Ruth and Idgie are sitting on the riverbank, and Ruth says she's getting married "to the man I'm supposed to marry,"....the look on Idgie's face says it all. She refused to go to the wedding. That scene where Idgie comes up on Ruth's porch with the pie.....is pure love. I saw an elderly lady watch this film, and when Idgie walked up on that porch, she said "Idgie is in love with Ruth." It doesn't take a psychiatrist to figure it out

It's nice that viewers are no longer triggered by the thought that they are in a lesbian relationship. Back in the day, straight women were screaming from the rafters that they were just friends and they would not entertain any other option. Which was weird considering Fannie Flagg, and sad.

My mother, who passed recently, was the one to introduce me to this movies! It's been one of my favorites ever since! The actress who played Ruth is Mary-Louise Parker. It you've checked out the show "Weeds", she's the lead on that show. Jessica Tandy, who played Ninny, had previously won the Oscar for Best Actress in 89 for "Driving Miss Daisy". This was the very next movie that she did. The same goes for Kathy Bates, who had just won Best Actress for "Misery". They kept offering her "Misery" type roles until the "Fried Green Tomatoes" script got to her. A lot of people think that Ninny is Idgie, but she really isn't. Even in the book, Idgie is alive and Buddy Jr. is with her.

I don't think Ninny and Idgie are the same person. In the book, where she is featured in the flashback stories, definitely not, and I don't believe she is in the movie either, although a lot of people do. In the movie: Ninny Threadgoode was married to Idgie's older brother, Cleo. "Mrs. Cleo Threadgoode. . . . I was practically adopted by the Threadgoode family. I married her brother, Cleo." She tells Evelyn this when she meets her for the first time. Ninnie says in voiceover narration that she had always had a crush on Buddy. Idgie was attached to her brother, but not like that. Ninnie says she was never brave like Idgie and Ruth. Ninnie says Sipsie told her years later about what really happened to Frank, which Idgie would already have known in detail. Those are things in the movie that strongly suggest they are different people. Also, just my opinion: Idgie was raising Buddy and Ruth was the love of her life. I don't see her marrying a man and having children (or child), which Ninnie tells Evelyn she has done. Of course, she could have been assaulted and told Evelyn a lot of lies, including a crush on her own brother and a marriage to another fictitious brother of Idgie. Are those the lies she would tell, though, even if she wanted to pretend, in telling the stories, that she was not Idgie? I don't necessarily think everything we see in the flashbacks is what is told to Evelyn. She may give her the broad outlines of what she knew at the time or was told later (as she does with what Sipsie told her) but we are shown what actually occurred. That's how I have to take a lot of flashbacks, for various reasons.

I spent a lot of my teenage years swimming there. That old mill and the dam is in Juliette, Ga. I remember when they started filming at the Whistle Stop Cafe they came and spread dirt over all the roads to get that old timey look. A couple of my sisters friends got cast as extras in the Cafe. They had real good food there, especially for some stoned teenagers . 😂

BJ and Asia, the older woman’s mind was sharp as a tack. She was telling the story like somewhat like riddles that you have to figure it out when she told a story sort of speak because of the circumstances that it involves someone that died that could be the reason why she skirted around it so much about herself. Just an FYI thank you for sharing. take care and be safe.🫶🏻🤠

My mother passed away the year of her 80th birthday. It's been about 6 years now. I remember my mother saying something similar to me the last time we spoke, that morning. I'm at the jumping off place and I'm not scared one bit. My mother told me that she wasn't afraid to die in the sense that someone my age is. Not seeing a future is not depression or scary when you realize that there is so much good in your life to reflect on.

There are Winn-Dixies in Florida- at least last we lived there in 2021. Whoever was in charge of Ninny's estate not telling her about the home was in the wrong. Either that or the lawyers for the city filing to condemn it didn't do due diligence with their legal notices because she was in the nursing home. They probably sent all the notices to the last known address of the owner- which was the house itself. Not uncommon back then for sure. Evelyn was taking self-improvement classes aimed at lonely housewives. They were super big in the 80s (when this movie is set). They usually try to help women re-connect on an emotional level to their husbands at a time when women (40+) are increasing libido at the same time as it's declining for men, with men that may be going through midlife crisis things or stuck in a rut, empty-nesters, etc. Ruthe couldn't tell the court that her husband beat her because it would have been a motive. Even spousal SA wasn't "a thing" nor even considered illegal in the states until the 1990s. Buddy Jr- Ruth's son that lost his arm- lived with his mother and Idgie. Idgie finished raising him when his mom died. Ninny was married to Idgie's brother Cleo- she said it at the beginning. Ninny and Cleo had a child with Downs Syndrome- Ninny met Idgie and Ruth after they were together, all the pictures Ninny had on the wall included pics of Idgie and Ruth- would have been her sisters-in-law, since Idgie and Ruth were a couple, they were probably all really close friends.

All really good information, but the movie really does suggest that Idgie and Ninny are one and the same person even though in the book they are separate people --- listen to the movie commentary to get more why they changed this element of the book.

Hey guys, so glad u got to FRIED GREEN TOMATOES. It is 1 of my absolute favorite movies, right next to THE COLOR PURPLE (1985). Ninny is not Idgie. She was Idgie's sister-in-law, that's why Ninny had all those pictures. The picture of the woman w/the little boy in the sailor suit was Ninny & her son. Ninny was correct that Idgie was out & about busy selling honey. Just to let u know, Ruth & Idgie were more than just friends, if u know what I mean. The reason why I know this is years ago I read the book which is still on my bookshelf right now. In the book, Idgie & Ruth were together nearly 20yrs after Ruth left Frank. Also, Buddy Jr. " Stump" was referred to as Ruth & Idgie's boy. Man o man, Evelyn's husband Ed was clueless. I think the movie just glosses over the fact that Evelyn & Ed are now empty nesters, & that is why Evelyn was taking the classes to reignite the spark between her & Ed. The scene where Evelyn & he friend are @ that 1st lecture about "...reigniting that spark, that passion in your marriage." The red-headed lady giving the lecture is the author of the book.😊 Anyway, I'm glad u liked it. I loved this reaction. ❤😊👍

Her name was Idgie which was short for Imogene. Even though the movie seems to hint that Ninny was Idgie at the end, she wasn't. In the beginning she even said she married one of Idgie's brothers Cleo and later said she had a son Albert. This movie was based novel and, in the book, Ninny and Idgie are definitely different people.

This is one of my all time favorite movies. It introduced me to the concept of a chosen family & that you can find your own way of life without it being a bad thing. It holds a very special place in my heart.

50:27 The book makes it clear Ninny is not Idgie, the movie kind of makes it clear in that she talks very matter-of-factly about being married to Idgie's brother, Cleo and having a mentally disabled son with him who only survived till he was 30, but the movie also does make the matter gray enough to leave that window open for interpretation by the viewer.

Most people who react to this film don't notice the love story between Ruth and Idgie- Idgie basically being a stereotypical lesbian, Idgie's reaction to the kiss on the cheek, the look on Ruth's face when Idgie collects the honey, the way Ruth says 'you're just a bee charmer', Idgie not wanting to go to Ruth's wedding, 'I'm as settled as I ever hope to be', Idgie saying that there's so much she wishes she could have told Ruth, the 'I will always love you' note at Ruth's grave (just to name a few). The book is a lot more enlightening on the subject but I guess the people behind the film decided to keep it more ambiguous to appeal to a wider audience.....

Fannie Flagg was a comedian in the 70's and a regular on Match Game, a regular viewer of the show noticed repeated errors in her answers and realized she was Dyslexic. She was a closeted Lesbian (Because of the times) and that as the basis of the relationship between Ruth and Idgy.

One of my ALL-TIME FAVORITE movies. I was a kid and watched this movie with my mom and grandma and aunts and uncles and cousins, some folks wandering in and out but the stories happening in this had me and my mom and grandma and aunts and uncles and some cousins 100% stuck exactly where we were. I was so much like Idgie...but my brother was only nice if I was pushed or bullied to tears. Then he would help me up, talk to me about how sometimes he just didn't want his kid sister, tomboy or not, hanging around. Still I have a bigger spark of bravery because I did. I don't share all of her similarities, my brother is alive, I'm straight, and I can cook/bake.

So the bee scene : as a 7yo I once went with a friend to a field for a picnic. I was eating a peanut butter and honey sandwich. I got one bite in before a bee was around. Then another and another and another. We had put our sheet down on a bee's nest in the ground. It was HER family field. She immediately ran off screaming, getting stung but I had frozen, first in fear.. then in acceptance that I was possibly, probably, going to die. I had bee's crawling in my face, ears, nose, almost my eyes. When I got calm...that's when I slowly stood up. I walked, arms away from my body and I was never stung. The girl was a friend of my parents' to her parents. They weren't aware yet that she left me to die. But I never trusted her again. I know she saw me getting covered in bees. She never told her "Papaw" who was removing the bee stingers from where she got stung.
