The Hillbilly Kitchen - Down Home Country Cooking

Күн бұрын

How to make Fried Green Tomatoes is kind of a lengthy video....just to fry a tomato. I mean, how hard could frying a tomato be? Well, it's a little more complicated than just throwing them in your frying pan for a few minutes and then serving them up. If you want them to taste good, you have to have a little patience and do it right.
This is my granny's recipe of course. I can remember helping granny make Fried Green Tomatoes at a very young age. I was so small that I had to stand on a homemade wooden stool that Paw had made, just to be able to see into the cast iron frying pan on the stove.
I took a particular interest in granny's cooking because she let me get involved in every aspect of it. I helped her plant the tomatoes, hoe the weeds out of the garden, stake them, pick them when they were ready, and then bread them and fry them.
Granny taught me that making Fried Green Tomatoes takes patience. It was a good life lesson. She said that if you don't teach yourself to be patient, then God would teach you and you're not gunna like the way he teaches!
Ingredients:
3 - Totally green tomatoes
1 cup - Self rising flour
1 - Egg
1 cup - Buttermilk
1 to 2 cups - Yellow corn meal
1 cup - Oil
Salt and pepper to taste
Sugar - Optional

I like to save the ends in the freezer and add them to soup for extra flavor. I also freeze lemons to avoid letting them get moldy. They still taste okay when you defrost them and use them. Don't cut them in half. Just puncture the stem end after running hot water over them and squeeze the juice out. You can save lemon skin in the freezer to use later in recipes for cookies, etc.Waste not, want not.

My Grandma use to talk about taking a fried green tomato sandwich when she was little in school her Mama would cook them up every morning for 8 kids back in the 20s &30s. They would do squash for sandwiches. They didn't have money they were coal miners. The meat they are was mostly what they could shoot. My Great Grandma was 97 years old when she passed back in 1982. Nothing beats country cooking. ❤

I also use peanut oil for all my frying. Last cholesterol test was a total of 124, so I just be doing something right. All the glory to God. Thanks for the tips. Hi from Canada. I ran out of paper towels a while back and began using egg cartons to absorb grease from bacon. They work great because when you close the top you can flip them over and absorb the top of the bacon also. I'm going to try this recipe and let them sit in the cartons after. It's not the same as sitting in paper towels and absorbing the grease. Just saving and using my old egg cartons for this has saved me a lot of money in paper towels. I try to get the most use out of everything before throwing it out. I love your shows and recipes!

For oil, you want to check two basic things: omega 3 to omega 6 and smoke point. There are more things to look at, but if the oil is really high in omega 6 you don't want that. You also need to make sure that the oil's smoke point is higher than the temperature that you plan to cook it with.

Thank you :) I have found that it is hard to top what a grandmother made, but these will be really close to as good as your husband's grandmother's. I would die without fried food, but as I get older eating healthy is also as necessary for life. You really can have your fried foods and eat them too!

Thank You,Thank You Becky!! I knew there was a reason God brought you into my Life. My Daddy and Aunt use to make Fried Green Tomatoes before they passed into their Heavenly Home. That’s been over 45 years. I just loved them. However I never was taught to make them. Enter Becky to teach me!! I feel so Blessed that I now can now make Delicious Fried Green Tomatoes to feed to my Husband and Family!! I also get to be with Daddy and Aunt smiling!! God Bless and keep your Eyes on Jesus🙏 Bless To You!! 🤗😊

Some of y'all must not be from the south ! I have been many parts of this great nation and everybody pronounce things differently everywhere I went ! It didn't matter whether it was Pennsylvania up north or Georgia down south , Oregon out west , Arizona in the southwest , North Dakota , Texas or Kansas ! So y'all just take a chill pill and learn to cook real food !

God was kind to me and sent me a beautiful Texan wife who taught me about good Southern cooking and fried green tomatoes were something we eagerly waited all winter for. I'm originally from Maryland which has a combination of Southern foods and other stuff. My mother made fried RIPE tomatoes and I could never eat them as they reminded me of puke! LOL Thanks to my Texas redhead I learned how to enjoy fried tomatoes the right way.

Lord have mercy !!! I am too broke and to hurried etc to worry about what I cook my tomatoes in. Cooked is cooked and I love cooked fried green maters. My mama breaded them in cracker crumbs and fried them till brown. She didn't dry, shake or bake anything and I truly enjoyed her cooking.
