Fried Peanut Butter Banana Sandwich | The Original Graceland Recipe | Elvis Presley Sandwich

My wife grew up in the same neighborhood of Tupelo Miss. as Elvis' family and most people sautéed the bananas in butter with a sprinkle of sugar to caramelize the "nanners" before assembling the sandwich and coating the outside edges of the toast with butter to fry them like a grilled cheese sammich...It's a World of difference in taste.

Love peanut butter and banana sandwhiches. I have it all of the time, ever since I was little. The thing is, I don't fry it. I just toast it using wheat bread usually (white sometimes), then put chunky peanut butter and banana on it.

Linda Thompson said on TV recently that these' sandwiches, Elvis wanted the bananas mashed into the peanut butter before spreading it onto the toasted bread. It had to be white bread preferably Wonder Bread and he liked slices of bacon in it too. Then she'd fried it like a grilled cheese in lots of butter, the way he liked it.

I drizzle honey on my peanut butter, then put the banana on it. If you're a diabetic you can sprinkle a little sucralose on the sliced banana then drizzle a little honey on it. The honey and peanut butter get melty and gooey and delicious. It's been so long since I made one, I can't remember if I toast my bread b4 frying it.

Hi there. I really hate to do this because I know there's a lot of people that believe this is the way Elvis always ate them ... but Elvis' father Vernon and Mary Jenkins came up with that recipe on the Fly. They were just winging it trying to figure out something that tasted good to Elvis but it is not the way Gladys made them for Elvis. Vernon tried, God luv him, but he just mis-remembered. And Gladys' way was SOOoooo much simpler or easier than what Mary & Vernon came up with. The REAL way - *if anyone wants to do it the way his mother Gladys used to make them* ... Here it is. Simply mash up the peanut butter & bananas together in a bowl (or on a plate ..whichever way is easier for people. But basically make the peanut butter & bananas sort of a Mashed-potato textured concoction (usually only takes a minute or so). Then just spoon it onto one slice of bread. Put the other slice of bread on top... you're done... drop it in the skillet, cook each side till golden brown. That extra step of toasting the bread first is not what Gladys did. It just is not necessary. Nor is slicing the bananas beforehand what Gladys did, again that was something Mary Jenkins & Vernon came up with in the moment. The reason I know this is because my wife and I have been longtime personal friends with Barbara Smith Hearn. (Most people that know anything about Elvis-history 1956 know who Barbara Hearn is). I was discussing with her the way I personally like to make those PBB Sandwhiches, but apparently I was doing it different that way Mary & Vernon came up with for Elvis. And she told me, "No Jay, you're way of making them, that is exactly the same way Gladys made those sandwiches for Elvis. Vernon and Mary came up with that other recipe themselves". Then Barbara explained to me how she tried to make one for Elvis herself one day when he was hungry and said, but she apparently did it wrong herself. So then Gladys walked around the corner, her and Elvis said "we're going to show you the way we do this". So Barbara pretty much stood there in the kitchen counter with them and watched. Again, as described above, Barb said it was as simple as I myself do it ...which is just - mash the peanut butters and bananas all together, slap the mix between two pieces of bread and drop in skillet. Oh, important, almost forgot the butter. It can either be dropped right into the frying pan or can butter the bread beforehand - whichever is easier, but either way taste comes out pretty much the same. So anyway there you go. A lot of people out there still do not know this. So feel free to Share or pass along this simple recipe that Gladys used to make them herself. I told Barbara she should have made this a matter of official public awareness in one of her past interviews. She laughed. Said she was totally unaware that there were so many people over the years that did not know the proper way that Gladys used to make them. So I guess there are two ways that Elvis liked them and people can do them whichever way they think is easier. They can do it the original way that is mother used to make them and Elvis was used to eating them or they can do it the other way that years later his father and Mary came up with that Elvis seemed to also like. I'm personally going with the way Gladys made them. so so much easier to make and always tastes awesome

2 variations that may or may not be authentic are bacon inside the sandwich and powdered sugar sprinkled outside. I think the bacon is authentic but the powdered sugar is taken from the Monte Cristo because they do that sometimes.
