Great comparison. I prefer the Friedman JEL here. It's very similar but has a tighter more percussive attack and low end. When you switched guitars (after the LP), I actually liked both and maybe even the JCM800 a bit more.

Glad Michael posted this. Good discussion. For real Marshalls in this category, I only have the JCM 2000 and the Origin at this point. I owned a used JCM800 combo back in 1990. Loved it but had to sell it back in 94

The usability of the JEL is great but something in the sound is just.. off for me. It sounds smoother, different mids, sometimes much muddier. So despite the JEL on paper being a better amp, all the usability features is worth nothing to me if I don't like the sound. And considering the JCM is waaaay cheaper (more than half the price here in Europe compared to JEL), it's a no brainer for me really.

I still prefer the Marshall LOL In each one of these videos! I prefer the warmth honestly. Not at all saying the Jake sounds bad at all, just a personal preference. I just think in a live setting and at high volumes the Jake would tear an audiences face off with all that top end and presence. I know you can dial it back bla bla ... Just saying that I still prefer the 800 and THATS OK!!! :P HAHAHA And you played Scared by Dangerous Toys!! LOVE THAT FUCKING RIFF!!!
@Nightjar7263 күн бұрын
Sounds like towards the end you had them sounding the same. Did you mess with the resonance on the Jake? Cause it sounded tighter in the beginning. Tighter and drier.
@BigHairyGuitars3 күн бұрын
I tend to leave the resonance pretty low on the Jake. You really have to start dialing things back on the JEL to make it match the 800. Pulling it back makes it sound less tight. But the JEL wants to be kinda of tight... it's where it wants to live.

One thing to remember is this, let me say I have owned both a Suhr SL68 and also a FRiedman BE50 Deluxe, and at the time I thought wow these must be better than Marshall, Marshall must suck! However, I never knew a lot about Marshall and never really had the chances to A/B them.... now that I have, I see that only a Marshall does EXACTLY what a Marshall does.... and here is the key.... NONE of my Heros used Suhr/Friedman back when I was growing up in the 80s! Did Randy Rhoads, Yngwie Malmsteen, Eddie Van Halen, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Angus Young, CC Deville, Slash, Jimmy Page, Zakk Wylde, Nuno Bettencourt, Marty Friedman, etc, did any of those players. the whos who of ROCK, did ANY of them use Friedman/Suhr to make ANY of the records I grew up on?>????????? NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And for THAT reason, I have made up my mind to never buy another Friedman/Suhr ever again.... same thing with PRS, I have had the PRS Wood Library 594 and I also had the 2020 Anniversary Dragon $16,500 PRS too..... but hey NONE of those guitarists played a PRS, not even one of them! I HATE ALL NEW BANDS THAT CAME OUT AFTER 1994! Period point blank! So there it is.... if you wanna play REAL Rock N Roll, you will play a Marshall and a Gibson Les Paul, there is no substitute! End of story.

Nothing against anyone, but that’s correct. “If you want a ‘Marshall’ get a Marshall.” I thought both sounded great here. I’d choose the JCM with an OD out of that. It just has “it.”
@veronatragedy70163 күн бұрын
@@NTTDaily You are right. They both do sound great, Friedman & Suhr both build some of the best quality best sounding amps on the market.... But only a Marshall is a Marshall, some call that Marshall thing the less poilished and less polite tone.... And for almost 10 years I fell into the Suhr and Friedman thing thinking wow, these must be Marshalls but BETTER, and based on tons of stuff I read online about people bashing Marshall I "assumed" wow those Marshalls must be cheap garbage that is a lot lesser than these new manufactures Suhr & Friedman, and I just blindly followed that for almost a decade.... then in the last year I started listening super close too all these A/B comparisons and it blew my mind how good the Marshalls actually sound. It blew my mind that even though I often do terrible in trying to pickout which amp is what when I close my eyes and listen to A/B comparisons of audio gear, often times I am wrong, but not in the case of Marshall, I learned the things to listen for and zero in on, it's a more harsh tone, and brigter, especially when it's not in a mix, but that's also one of the things that Makes Marshall great is that harsh and bright tone you hear when played outside of a mix sounds perfect once it's in a mix with other instruments, it cuts through and sits well. I did not understand that concept at all for so many years. Also another thought that dawned on me as a revelation/epiphany was this.... back in the 80s/90s, I never ever once listen to a rock album and thought wow these are great songs but I wish they had better quality amps, something in the ball park of a Marshall but better.... I never once thought that. So, that made me think then why would I want to change that? I mean this is all just my opinions and every one has different goals, but I'm the type of guy that wants my tones to sound as close as I can get it to all my heros, I really am not someone trying to reinvent the wheel, I just want those tones I grew up hearing. And with the Suhr & Friendman amps I had, I just always felt like "something" was missing.... and when I started really digging into the Marshall videos and A/B comparisons that was when I finally heard exactly what my tone has always been missing. I have to hereby announce, that I officially have Marshall Fever now! And.... maybe this is just my crazy paranoia, but has everyone noticed how 3 or 4 of the biggest guitar channels ahve all recently been doing these videos on Marshall at the same time?????????? I think that is a clue that they know stuff we don't know and they are ramping up for it! I think Marshall has some sort of new amps they are about to release that will be more competitive with the quality and consistency of Friedman & Suhr, and I also think Marshall is going to release something with some fire breathing gain that can compete with amps like the EVH Stealth, ENGL Savage/Powerball, and Mezzabarbara! If so that is going to truly be awesome, and right on time too since Spinal Tap 2 is about to be released in theaters! I am thinking 2025 is going to be one of the most exciting times we have guitarists have seen in many, many years!
