Great review and awesome song/playing! The JJ Jr. sounds huge and articulate even though it has EL84s, so I’m wondering if you’ve compared it to an amp like the JCM800 with EL34s? If so, did you notice much difference in the overall thickness and bottom end? The JJ Jr. sounds amazing from all the videos I’ve seen, so I’m just wondering what you lose with the 20W and EL84s. Also, do you know how well it cuts through in a live mix? Thanks.

Thanks! 100w or 50w has a bigger tone, more lows, more highs, well…more everything but this one feels indeed pretty good & big too but nothing beats a 100w JCM800 2203 & Plexi 😎. I actually prefer a 50w 1987x more than a 100w SLP but yeah 💪😊.

Absolutely. As you probably now 100w / 50w tube amps are so insanely loud when you dial the master to their optimal level to get the mojo that the only venues I’ve been able to play like they were designed to are basically +3000 seaters. The amps were designed back in the day to do just that without PA which, back then, was just basically used for vocals. I’ve done shows with a 5 watt amp ’cos when it’s mic’d it doesn’t matter how quiet or loud it is ’cos it’ll come out from the PA as loud as the FOH wants 😎. And you have monitors / in-ears on stage so you can have it also as loud as you want 👌.

Can you get an early zakk wylde time on this? I'm looking for a lower wattage amp that can do that. The Marshall studio classics are just ok...but missing something

Sound wise would you take a Marshall SC20 STEALTH over the Friedman JJ Jr ?? Also I watched this video from a guy from England who opens them up and he says that the Marshall SC20 Stealth was better put together and that what little work done by hand was excellent. He said the Friedman PCB/hand work he wasn't impressed from a technical stand point.

I was thinking about this amp but I just don’t think it’s got enough to play heavier metal. I’d love to see someone to a chug video lol. I know you can get heaviness out of this amp but it’s very “dirty” or “rocky” sounding.

Yeah it’s in that hot rodded British territory, like basically all Friedman’s, which I personally love for all styles of music, including chug 😎. I could do a chug video with it but it was on loan from Friedman’s distributor and I don’t have it anymore.

Also... if you don't want to watch the video this was copied from the Friedman website; The JJ Junior features and internal load and cab-simulated XLR output. Comparing this analog circuit to some of the most intricate computer-based IRs, Dave achieved a direct output you can proudly send to front of house or use in the studio. The JJ Junior also allows you to play "silently," meaning you can safely play the amp WITHOUT having a speaker cabinet connected. The XLR output includes a ground-lift, level, and center/edge of speaker cone simulation switches.
