For me the JJ easily wins. Of course we can make the argument that they serve different purposes, but I just found the JJ to have a more aggressive mid range growl, with distinct highs, chewy lows, and generally a lot more "open" sounding, where as the MT sounded muffled, and the highs sounded kind of fizzy. The JJ sounds a lot more "musical" to me, where as the MT sounds a bit more "generic", not in a bad way, but just not as "musical". The MT is a nice amp, but I just don't feel it's in the same class as the JJ.

TBH I think it's just a case of british VS american tone. we all know which amps the respective signature artist like to play, and from what products their signature amp borrow from. I think they're bot great amps for what they are. they're sure different, and me personally being a Marshall (and overall british tone) fan, I'd describe them just as you.

@@podhditalia That's true in a general sense, but there's variation in tone even within the British and American tones, which is why I pointed out the specifics of how I felt about each amp. There are American amps I like too, and British amps that I like less, if just depends on the music.

I recently was hunting for a lunchbox amp and the MT15 came up a winner. Ill be honest, the lights and tubes being visible was a big thing for me. It is ridiculously loud, i have the whole house to myself and i can barely turn the volume up but the red channel has a killer metal tone, no extra pedals needed

I happen to have both of these and this was very enjoyable and confirming. I could hear the tonal difference in the cleans, with the Friedman having a little more clarity, although that doesn't mean the PRS was necessarily muddy. Distorted, they were so close that I love both. And yes, you Les Paul sounds amazing through both. Playing them in stereo is fun, too. :)

Oofff, that's a hard one... I am still in love with the MT15, but I really like the openness/airiness of the JJ. I think these two would be a beast combo if you'd stack them in a mix. You'd have that fat low end, throaty and thick midrange of the MT15, with the snappy attack and top-end definition of the JJ.

Great comparison man. I liked both, but the JJ Jr. has a little something extra. I definitely prefer its clean channel. But it seemed to have more punch overall. Couldn't hear that big a difference in the dirty tones but the JJ still just felt a tad more full. JJ Jr. for me but I am bias as I own one and have been blown away by it from day 1. I was surprised to hear you say the JJ clean breaks up easily, and hearing the tracks and seeing your settings, more surprised. Mine stays quite clean at those low settings?? Anyway, the MT-15 sounded really good to me and as someone else said, it could be down to minor EQ settings and speakers. But I didn’t realize the MT-15 was only $750 new! Hard to ignore the bang for buck there!

As you explained at the end, when you understand the Friedman is your classic brighter and tighter rock style, and the MT15 is more modern mid forward high gain then in the end they both are winners. A lot of comments say they prefer the JJ cleans, but im not sure you buy an amp with that many gain stages in it for the best cleans. Amps that have no gain controls on them usually are a good place to start for the best cleans!

There is something special about those Friedmans. First time plugging into one is an eye opening , or Ear opening experience. I recorded all my tracks (fast metal) on a Mark V and am now redoing most all of them with the JJ. The Percussive pick attack and Clarity with just the right amount of saturation is perfect for Technical stuff. I am def Picky but the Prs seems to have more of a solid state buzzsaw sound. There's always a great benefit to doing demo's when in a studio environment. Although, you run the risk of over-producing tracks at the same time. When testing out an amp in a real-world situation, you're not listening to a stereo feed through IR's. But, I digress... It would be really helpful if some time was spent on what kind of hard-rock tone either one of these amps could deliver. Something dialed up with less gain, and more mid-focused percussive punch. I heard a demo the other day that wasn't for the amp it was for pickups, that just happened to be through a JJjr, with a Koko boost in front of it, and it was one of the best hard-rock tones I've ever heard. It was almost an SLO kind of tone. Had it not been for that demo, I would have never thought of that combination. I was stunned it was a JJjr. It just went to show that these amps can go WAY outside their "signature" sound. And, it was a very quick "short"....maybe 30 sec's, recorded with an iPhone. This channel has GREAT demo's. It's one of my go-to's when buying gear. So....just a suggestion.

On the subject of wattage, both in speakers and amps: wattage is only a ballpark figure as far as an amp’s loudness. The reactance of the power supply and output sections can make a rated 100w vary wildly in loudness. It’s more a measure of the energetic output of the tubes which must be dissipated as heat/mechanical energy. That is why some louder amps had a tendency for reliability or fire issues than others (think Hiwatt DR103 or AC100) - wiring of too small a gauge (with higher relative impedance) acts as a functional choke for dissipating that heat. A louder amp at a given wattage rating is proving much more efficient at power output. Similarly, a speaker’s (or cabinet’s) efficiency is really what you need to look at after the rated paired handling. Too big of an handling disparity will result in blown speakers. They are converting that heat energy to electromechanical/electromotive force to drive the speaker through its entire travel cycle. Ever touch the insulation inside of a cab after a long jam session at high volume levels? It’s really warm, as is the wiring. It’s a common misconception that wattage is so directly related to loudness. There’s a relationship, to be sure, but not as much one-to-one as we all have been taught.

Awaiting a Splawn Nitro to replace it (also marshalesque) @sonic drive Id love to hear your thougths on the Revv G20... Its the small amp I have been liking most (with a soul food as boost, as it lacks tightness in the heaviest tones without it). It sounds fantastic combined with a boost though. With the boost it gets super dry and tight sounding.

Down to EL84 vs 6L6 tubes. The Friedman sounds tight and ballsy. When you switched to the PT, the sound got big and thick. I would need to go back to the full mix to see if it made a difference once the bass and kick were added. When mixing, did you have to cut any of the lows on the PT for it to fit into the mix better? I bet you didn't need to do that with the JJ.

The Friedman does it for me on both the clean and dirty channels. The clean sounds more jangly and distinct, and the dirty just has that crunchy, sizzle in the mid's that is to Die for. The MT15 sounds bad ass too, but I found the clean channel to sound like you'd thrown a blanket over the speaker and while the dirty had plenty of drive and grit, it just didn't have that Crunchy sizzle that the Friedman did. I wish the Friedman were running EL34's instead of EL 84's. I think you could really get some volume out it then like the PRS. Everyone says the PRS is really loud like a 30 watt amp as you said. I have a Peavey Classic 20 MH and it has killer tone and get's pretty loud, but it's not quite enough to get me over the top of my buddy's 1x12 15 watt Blues Junior. Even with my 2x12 cab the blues junior just roars with his Strat.......LOL I figure the JJ would be similar to my Peavey Classic 20 in Volume level. We need to see some more 30/40 watt heads about the size of the Marshall Origin 20 box. That's what I'd like to see, size em down but keep with the 6l6 or EL34 platforms and bigger transformers. Great Demo and playing as usual. Cheer's!

This is interesting. I own the MT15 and I owned the Friedman and promptly sent it back because I couldn't get along with its harsh high end. Maybe I didn't have the right cab for it. (4x12 greenbacks) The MT15 has a smoother quality that didn't make me rush to turn down the treble. I can basically run all the eq at noon and get a pleasant tone on the MT15. Also worth noting: the MT15 holds its composure way better at high volumes. I use it as a backup to a 50 watt JCM 800 (heavily modded for gain). I've never felt like I was pushing it beyond its limits even on big stages. ALL the other 15-20 watt amps I've owned drastically changed (degraded) at reasonable stage volumes. Some people like this but for me they become too flubby. I don't like power tube distortion with metal guitar. But in this presentation, I like the Friedman better. I'm guessing that he wasn't pushing either of these amps to their limits to record them. Again, probably pairing the right cab with each amp makes a huge difference too. Not to diminish this presentation but if you're a tone snob and you want one of these amps for gigging, make sure you demo them at stage volumes. Any amp really but especially the lower wattage ones. I have found that most amps sound great at bedroom volumes but not all sound good at gigging volumes. Just my two cents. Excellent Video!

maybe it doesn't matter to a lot of the people in the comments but I feel like the most important part of the shootout between these amps that everyone is leaving out...is that the MT15 is $1000 cheaper than the JJ JR

I think they both sound great. Both offer different tones. Would be awesome to listen to them going together at the same time???🤔 I own the MT-15. The price is what got me. I got the gen-1 version. With 6L6 tubes. The new version has different tubes it them. As the tube manufacturer burnt down last year. So I really don’t know what they sound like. So if you get a hold of the gen 2 version??? You should do a comparison of the two??

Mark Tremonti actually prefers the new tubes over the 6L6's. I've seen several interviews with him where he says so.

I’m not a metal guy, but I definitely prefer the tone of the PRS. Every Friedman I’ve ever heard or played has this upper fizziness that just doesn’t dial out, and it doesn’t have the thick mids that you’d expect for something trying to go for a Marshall vibe. The PRS sounds like if you were playing into a recto and a jcm800 at the same time. You get the deep bottom and crisp high end of the Recto, but you get the stronger mids of the JCM. A comparison I’d love to hear is the PRS against a mini recto, the SLO30 and the SC20 (aka JCM800 mini).

Well if you read the comments you might want to rethink what you're thinking..clearly everyone loves the JJ so you gotta ask yourself that question..is it me ?

Clean channel on the Friedman.. BUT, check out the difference in GAIN settings to get the same tone(basically)..The Friedman is all but dimed, and the Tremonti is at about 1 o'clock...and yes, it does go up from there. I own one. For cost comparison, and overall, the PRS seems the better deal. My opinion of course. Not that I dont love Friedman products.

I think for me the Friedman is better in isolation in that it’s a little more classic sounding and slightly more natural sounding. But I think I prefer the prs in this specific mix and song.
