One woman among those unaccounted for recently moved to the building from New York. Her condo made a mark in several viewers’ minds when they saw a bunkbed hanging from the side of the collapsed building.

It was one of those images that struck most, especially those who have little children - were there any kids in that bunk bed?!?! Were they saved or did they fall into the debris??!!😱😮😬Then I googled "Miami condo, white bunk bed" and there was this story of a woman recently moving in by herself into a furnished apartment. Her sister kept joking that when she visits her, that's where she'd sleep... A sigh of relief!!!😰 Yet, I know there were other children in the building...😢😔🙏

No one imagined that this building could collapse. No one imagined the set of circumstances required to happen that would cause this tragedy. I looked online and at least nine apartments had sold in this building since late 2018 when they found out the building needed millions spending on it. Three apartments were listed for sale online when this happened and this one was rented. Someone needs to check that the condo board didn't keep this quiet so they could sell their property rather than pay out for their share of repairs. That would explain waiting so long to even get quotes on the repair costs. Other tenants are claiming they were kept in the dark and someone needs to find out if the condo association acted openly or just sold up and left. It seems weird that they would keep living in a building they knew was so badly in need of repair.

Secondly, they have already stated that the city will pay for the demolition. Normally, that would fall to the owner of the building but I guess they want it done immediately and by their people, so they are paying. I don't know why but they did say they were paying when they announced they are doing it.

I seriously don't understand why there are people "unaccounted for" and not presumed to be somewhere in the rubble. If my apartment collapses and I was not in it, wouldn't the first thing I do is let someone know? Are we supposed to be believe that there is still over 100 people in the rubble and we've only found 12 at this point?
@ravenel23 жыл бұрын
You have no idea what digging through 12 collapsed stories of rubble over an entire block is actually like. Rescuers die if it is not done carefully and slowly, and you can’t dig down through a collapsed building with your hands, you need heavy machinery. It’s like people asking why the survivors of the Titanic just climb on the iceberg. Reality is very different…
@jlperry873 жыл бұрын
@@ravenel2 You didn't address anything in my comment. What does rescue efforts have to do with them using the term "unaccounted for"? And what does the Titanic analogy have to do with a building collapse? My main point is that I wish they would presume all of these people "unaccounted for" to be buried in layers of rubble already and stop acting like they are elsewhere just chilling.

They can't make assumptions, either they have a body or the person contacts someone to let them know they are ok, without either of those then the person remains unaccounted for

The mayor of Surfside was asked how do the authorities know how many were in the building and he said the people who work inside the condo building have a log in system, meaning, as people come into the building, they have to log in. Guests and owners are all labeled as "guests" and they know the number of guests they had in the building at the time of the collapse. Let's say someone who rented one of the condos went out for the evening and brought back 3 friends to his condo. All are now unaccounted for. There may be some who are dead right now that family members outside didn't know were in that building. Could be. Dunno.

The bunk beds looked slept in and so I couldn't stop thinking that maybe kids were asleep there. I kept thinking what those kids would have done to get out. I was so taken back by this image of the bunk beds. I have a bit of relief, but I still keep coming back here, hoping that people might still be alive and safe 😔 It's just beyond me how the media can take a picture which, in turn, would allow me to make an assumption to mess my mind up. Initially, I had stopped watching the news, but it's inescapable. Even though I've been indirectly affected, it still doesn't take away the thought that this could happen to me at any time because the reality is, I just never know... Not to sound cryptic or anything, but I mean, these people were just sleeping, in their homes, where they were supposed to be safe. It terrifies me.

2021 If I am thinking positive...keeping a positive outlook*(cause that's who I am). There IS a possibility of some people still alive. Yep...under all that debris, there could be pockets of air and people are tough.....even without food/water and medical attention.....it IS POSSIBLE to have some people survive.....The universe is weird like that. Yeah you could say everyone is dead. (and you could be 100% right), but I am gonna say Eff it! Someone , be it animal or human, COULD STILL BE ALIVE. * This is coming from a surfer caught in a hurricane wave off the coast of Jersey, ending up on a jetty, then swept up by a 10' wave and over the jetty onto the leeward side, and instead of landing on my head (sharp ass jetty rocks), I broke the fall with my foot, and survived. I could have died that day, but I didn't. So, yeah, I look at life and tragic events differently. Aloha! 🤙🤙

Honestly, as the building was collapsing some were being hit in the head with concrete, furniture etc. Most were dead before they hit the "ground". Those who were asleep and rode the collapse were killed instantly when the ceiling and above floors rested on them. Not a pretty way to go but let's hope they were unconscious before the building pancaked onto them!

I guess our government rather dig through smell of death, pay for rescue clean up operation and risk additional life's rather then provide financial assistance for a buildings in distress thru subsidies to local government. Now the cost of this operation will exceed ten fold then the cost of the repair needed besides all life lost. We must rethink our laws regarding structural upkeep and building financial hardship.
