Usually during combat operations, combat aviation has a "corridor" from which it can approach that's implicitly for friendly assets. But, we've been hearing about these training cuts across aviation for the past 12 years since the Obama administration and sequestration. And there's always a lag between reducing training and the lives that it invariably costs in such an unforgiving environment. From a huge increase in military aviation fatalities from 2014 - 2020 ... to having to use a freaking GARMIN for GPS in the US Navy ... to FEMALE OFFICERS WHO WEREN'T SPEAKING TO EACH OTHER, to DEI and seeking _decepticons_ into the military. The notion that our military is now anything like the one that we had in the 1990s is a delusion. In no other profession are the penalties for employing untrained personnel so appalling or irrevocable as in the military. -- General Douglas MacArthur Even the bespoke designs we have of very high tech equipment is an illusion ... in that we not only have small inventories of them, but because there is NO level of inventory that's sufficient for an actual conflict. And instead of creating mfring facilities for each bespoke, high tech product we report across the YT media-scape and through all the military media ... we use just a handful of them like timeshares, in which they barely satiate some token inventory and training production rate that would have absolutely no influence on an actual peer-to-peer conflict, which we know from WWII become competitions in manufacturing as much as they are battle's of will.

I don't think IFF redundancy was necessarily the breakdown. The Gettysburg is loaded with missiles using both radar and IR tracking. IR is going to be a lot more reliable against anti-ship missiles and large drones which would have small RCS, so they'd just lock on to a bright, hot signature in the sky in the general direction. I'm under the impression there was human error confusion from using radar and IR tracking which might switch up the IFF, as those are different between radar, radio, and IR signals.

Sorry, mate, but, taking into account that - IFF aside - in a scenario like the one described, all the participating assets are integrated into the same datalink network, these incidents cannot be attributed to a lack of redundancy in communications. It is too early to give an opinion and, obviously, there is a lot of data missing (which will probably never be known) but, at a first glance, some catastrophic and undetected error must have occurred on board the USS Gettysburg for two missiles to be launched against two F-18s. I personally suspect that there are unqualified individuals responsible for such outcomes but the Navy will never admit to it. It’s the remnants of DEI practices by the military during the last four years that will need to be rooted out. Two friendly fire incidents closely clustered together where high-tech is involved is too high of a frequency to suddenly start blaming methods and training.
@JBurt1322 күн бұрын
I was 💯 thinking the same thing. Instead of hiring the best people for the job, they are hiring strictly based on skin color, ethnicity, or sex. The aviation industry is cursed with this same issue, hence the near misses and planes falling apart in the sky. Bet the US Navy doesn't admit to that blunder if it's true. The first one got hit probably because they had their countermeasures equipment safed before landing. It should be before landing checklist stuff and the second aircraft was far enough from landing they had theirs still armed. Obviously I’m just guessing here from my military aviation experience. Not likely. These things happen sometimes. We’ve had blue on blue accidents many times in the past. From the 1st gulf war, to this one. And many more in prior wars I’m unaware of personally. Thankfully, they’re rare. With everyone on alert - especially AFTER this -any sub in the area would’ve been sniffed out. Any jamming signal itself would’ve been heard. That’s the downside of jamming. When you jam, everyone knows you’re there, AND where you are; same with hacking. (Which is exactly why you’re not supposed to have civilian starlink terminals on US Navy ships. They’re not secure) And any surface ships would’ve also been picked up. If they had a brand new super secret toy that Iran or China gave them, it would’ve been a waste to expose it for this, instead of during an actual conflict. Lastly, the fact that the Navy owned up to their mistake VERY quickly, leans toward friendly fire. Instead of being confused, and saying, ‘we’re looking into this ongoing blah blah blah situation’. Lol

@xyz-hj6ul23 күн бұрын
The aircraft were tankers, coming aboard after an airstrike. They are always the last to recover in case someone has a bad night on the ball or suffers damage and they turn from overhead to rescue refuelers. As such, they likely had the heaviest, four bubble, one HDU, loadout. Their EW systems were also shut down so as not to react to stray emissions on deck, irradiating the plane handlers. With all of these modifiers in effect (super heavy jets; Jammer off, no tow bird deployed; low, slow, dirty configured...) the F/A-18Fs were not going to beat the SM-2, no matter what. Having said this, your comment is a valid one, in a single sense: The AIM-9X. At least in theory, if you see the launch event happen in time, the weapons system is hot (it wouldn't be, behind the boat) and the geometry allows the helmet sight the angles to track the threat, the Blk.II AIM-9X can launch, go super-HOBS, and acquire the inbound threat while it's still in boost phase, attempting a nose-to-nose hittile kill. The 129X128 seeker has the FPA pixel count to do it, though whether the missile reactions are up to the task is iffy. The 9X is basically a useless appendage in modern, BVR centric, air warfare, but as a self-defense trick shot, maybe it could do it, with the JHMCS going through the datalink to tell the missile where to point and acquire the threat shot in a kind of 'self protect mode', hard kill, defeat.
