Not from the USA, I've never encountered an opossum, but we do have possums here in Australia which I love. A lot of people here call them vermin, but the ones that I've tamed up enough for them to eat out of my hand are beautiful and I love them. It breaks my heart when I see the hundreds of possums that have been killed on the 40km stretch of road that I drive on twice a week 😥. Every single life of any animal is precious.

Thank you Wendell - you will be remembered. U can crash in any of my rodent family's prairie dog mansions (no ghosts unless you want them). Rodents burrow because we HAVE to AND we love it (kinda like beavers & damming & Purnhoob). Opossums are SO underrated and far superior alternates to humanoid children. Ooops..uh..

Possums are awesomes! I have a few that live around my house, I used to not be sure about it, but I noticed, 1. No odor at all. 2. They only come out at night 3. They eat ticks and tick eggs, #3 was enough to win me over, and my cats can walk in the yard with them and they completely ignore each other. My 2 younger cats were feral kittens, so they were raise to hunt and eat their prey. And the possums are not prey, they peacefully coexist. So I keep a place in my heart for the local possums. Raccoons, I love, but they are wild things!!! I much rather see a lazy possum.

I also had a opossum as a pet a long time ago. I was known around our town as an animal lover and rescuer when necessary. A young orphaned opossum was brought to me and I managed to raise it. It was long before the internet and i didn't know how to raise it to go back in the wild. A few times when I took him outside, he ran after me and climbed into my arms. He had no desire to go back to the wild. Sadly, they are short lived but I have amazing memories. They are so sweet and loving, and ultra clean. They are absolutely incredible.

I like that she admitted that she made some mistakes with raising them but now she is doing her best to give them the best lives possible. People often baby their baby animals way too much, even dogs and cats to the point that it spoils them, with wild animals it usually just means they won't ever be released, but with dogs and cats it can lead to big problems in behavior, thank heavens they are O'possums and seem to be thriving with all the love.

I’ve never understood why opossums are so hated/feared. With their cross-eyes, their peaceful nature and fluffy fur, I always thought that they’d make decent pets…
@emordnilap474711 ай бұрын
Ikr? The opossum's main defence is pretending to be dead! Their teeth are like cat's, so they don't chew everything up, like rodents. They eat pests like small rodents, and hundreds of ticks a night, preventing the spread of diseases such as lime disease. They aren't known diseases spreaders(though as should be obvious, any mammal, or their droppings could potentially get you sick, if you handle it), and are resistant, or immune to many. They're immune to rabies. The only possible down side is if you have certain animals. Kittens, chicken eggs, or chicks would all be on the menu.

Opossums have very bad eyesight during the day. Their general vision is very weak. They have good night vision up to a point. They rely more on smell hearing than eyesight.
