My buddy had a grandfather in WW2. I can’t remember whereabouts but apparently he had been separated from his own. As he was making his way back he and a German soldier came across one another. Both drew and aimed their pistols but neither men shot. They lowered their arms before walking to each other. The German unloaded the exact bullet that could have ended his grandfathers life and gave it to him, to which he did the same. He was buried with it in his pocket when he passed 6 decades later.

My German Grandpa were with 16 at the Eastern Front. He was volunteering and saw the real horror and meaning of war. He survived this all thanks to a cellar anywhere in Berlin. He walked from Berlin to Plön and were caught 2 times. 1 time by the soviets and the other by the tommys He was on a German Danish school so he spoken Danish and the soviets and tommys thought he were just a Danish prisoner. When he arrived in Ascheberg near at Plön he saw his grandma. First his grandma didnt notice him and just said he should go away. He said his name (dont want to say his name) and she just crying thought that he never came back. If my grandpa wouldnt survived the war I wouldnt be here right now. God saved him

My grandfather was a sapper during the second world war. He was injured and forced to retreat into a forest at one point and he happened to stumble across a German medic that was on patrol was my grandfather's guess. For a while they stood there staring at eachother with guns raised until the German medic noticed my grandfather's wounds and said in broken Russian "You are injured, yes?" My grandfather confirmed he was. The German asked my grandfather if he would let him help. My grandfather thought he had nothing to lose and let the German medic patch him up and give him water. Hours passed and they had made a campsite, fire place and makeshift shelter. They exchanged many stories about close calls and few moments of joy they had. They're friends to this day.

I was born in USSR. Both of my grandpas fought in WW2. My one grandpa told me a story how he was out of ammo and a German caught up to him. My grandpa was wearing a coat that was Soviet standard issue and doubled as a tent for sleeping under during rainy days. So it was very drapy. The German aimed and unloaded the whole clip into my grandpa. Not one single bullet hit him but his coat looked like a fisherman’s net. He looked down and couldn’t believe his eyes. The German had the look on his face like he witnessed a Devine miracle. Then the German walked up to him, shook his hand. They exchanged looks that said “neither one of us want to be here.” They turned around and walked in opposite directions. Never saw each other again. But my grandpa was always grateful that the German didn’t take out his side arm and finished the job. He said it was a surreal moment for both of them. Like god came down and told them that they’re not enemies but brothers.

This is so powerful. Actions speak so much more than words do. I feel that the Russian understood that as a soldier the German had to do it, but didn't want to go after meeting a friend, same goes for the German. He hated that he had to do that to someone he felt compassion or worry for, because he is another human being that didn't want to fight in a war he had no quarrel in. Truly a beautiful film with a very important meaning.

Both from two sides, two cultures, two leaders, yet both know that they are just young men forced or willingly join their nation's cause. The Russian showed trust and kindness as well as the young German soldier, they drank, ate and smoked together. When the other Germans approached the young German knew that the others would kill the soviet and possibly him as well. You can see in their eyes that neither wanted to die, but it had to for the sake of survival, their was no boundaries or barriers. Both became friends without a single word spoken, it's sad and yet beautiful, poetry without dialog. Great work dear creator to show both sides in a better light and humane way.

What did that terrible, monstrous enemy look like? He always replied that a person looks like a person, and after that, he fell silent. I am sorry for the millions of innocent souls who've had their lives taken. In my view film shows how people act differently when they are left alone and when they are in group. He shot him only because other germans would find them and he would get executed for helping enemy but alone they were human to eachother. Same thing would have happened if roles were reversed.
