Tell no one you prep. Anyone you tell WILL show up at your door with their hand out, when you say no - they WILL be a threat. When you do not take them (and their family & friends) in - they will complain to everyone who will listen, this word of mouth will reach the raiders, leading death to your door. Real question is when Walmart has been looted clean, how far will a hungry non-prepper walk to TAKE your food ? A friend ask "how much ammo do I need ?" My answer was 3 rounds for every non-prepper in walking distance that knows you have food.

Larry is the first normal prepper in this series. In my opinion most of the other preppers are crackpots. I think some of them are addicted to prepping just like shopaholics are addicted to spending because it gives them a high. These people probably have mental illness issues. These extreme preppers will probably have severe withdrawal pains if there is no way to keep buying stuff during a societal breakdown. (I'm bipolar but fortunately have never gone on big spending sprees, but some people with this disorder do.) I believe in being prepared, but I'm not OCD about it.

While I respect anyone who actively prepares for the worst case scenario, I feel the motives for two of these individuals are heavily influenced by emotions (fear) rather than rational and logical analysis. While fear oftentimes serves as a great motivator, making any decisions in fear or in any emotional state is not the best course of action. In my opinion, if an individual is to prep for a "Doomsday" event, they need to determine/identify the following criteria before doing the actual prep: 1.) What event they are preparing to occur? 2.) How likely will the event occur? 3.) Will that event occur during your lifetime? 4.) What's the duration of the event should it occur? In my analysis, two of these preppers did not consider points 2 and/or 3. In the case of Michael, his overwhelming fear of overpopulation has taken a huge social cost to himself and possibility his family. While the skills he possesses and teaches are extremely invaluable, the time and effort taken to learn the skillsets are more likely to be used for personal/individual survival rather than as a response to a world ending event. Can overpopulation occur? Yes, it is a possibility. However, it is an event that occurs overtime, not overnight, and the odds of him or his children of actually employing those skills during their lifetimes for an unlikely event is very low. An analogy of this point is an individual who is so afraid of drowning while vacationing in a cruise ship that he/she keeps her life preserver and scuba gear on during her entire cruise. In the case of Becky, she has the overwhelming fear of martial law or a government takeover. Like in the case of Michael, Becky's fear motivated her to stock up on food, water, and to take gun lessons. However, while Becky's motivations has made her more prepared and incentivized her to made some impressive investments in dehydrated food and water, the likelihood of a government takeover and/or martial law occurring within a conservative state/city like Utah is pretty low (even during the current political climate). Although I agree that civil unrest and martial law is more likely to occur in certain large cities (i.e.: Washington DC, New York, etc.) during her lifetime, Becky needs to focus less on what may happen and more on what is happening in her life.

Such a lucid and well said comment. Wish I could give it more thumbs up. "Overwhelming fear of..." The intense emotion of fear, is an honest motivator and surely serves an enormous purpose. But I agree with you, that when it overwhelms us, it may no longer serve us quite as well.

I know that people live in all different conditions, elevations, population levels, weather, etc but it seems like if prepping is one of your biggest concerns, moving to more temperate conditions would be a good idea. When everything else is going wrong, why have a fight with the elements (extreme cold, heat, lack of natural resources like food & water) on your plate? This guy up in Maine and the other guy in Colorado (shelter builder from different episode) seem like they have some real challenges ahead if ever they had to bug out. If I ever get serious about prepping, N. California is where I'd look for a place. There is abundant open land, mild weather and plenty of good resources (clean water, good arable land, fish and game to eat, etc.) available. Another vote for my choice of N. California is that I have plenty of relatives there. Of course, if ever the time comes, family will be an extremely important resource.
@DareToBeDeviant
@DareToBeDeviant Жыл бұрын
Sometimes they're too settled in to pack it all up and migrate to a more hospitable area. California may have ideal weather but do does Nevada, Texas, Georgia, and Arizona. The 'rules' are a lot less harsh, too. In California the people in charge like to pretend human rights don't exist and everyday people who want to get ahead in life need permits for this, permits for that, and excessive wait times on those just to be told 'no'.

Going down the hierarchy to the more primitive as your resources run out would be the smarter way to do it. Harmonize modern technology with old world knowledge. Having both is best.

Even with treatment 10% still die. We are still heavily dependent on China for most medical supplies.
