INT. TRADITIONAL YEMENI MARKET - DAY Chandler, wearing sunglasses and a hat, is trying to blend in but sticks out like a sore thumb. Stalls with vibrant colors, spices, textiles, and various goods surround him. The hustle and bustle of the market is evident, with vendors calling out to customers and children running about. CHANDLER: (Looking around, overwhelmed) "This is... colorful." FARID: "Welcome to the heart of Yemen, my friend! Here, you can find anything from spices to camels." CHANDLER: "I'll pass on the camel, but do they have those little snow globes?" FARID: (Laughs) "You Americans and your snow globes! Come, let me show you something truly Yemeni." They approach a stall with traditional Yemeni clothes. FARID: "You should get one of these. It will help you blend in!" CHANDLER: "Oh sure, because nothing says 'I'm a local' like a tourist in traditional clothing." FARID: "Trust me, you'll look great. And it's comfortable too!" CHANDLER: (Skeptical) "Alright, but if I end up looking like Aladdin, you owe me a magic carpet ride." Farid chuckles as Chandler tries on the outfit. He steps out, looking surprisingly fitting. FARID: "See? You look... authentic!" CHANDLER: "Do I? Or do I look like a guy who's about to burst into 'A Whole New World'?" A vendor nearby overhears and starts playing a tune on his instrument that sounds vaguely like 'A Whole New World'. Chandler groans. CHANDLER: "Great, now I have an audience." FARID: "Embrace it! You're a hit!" Chandler does a funny little dance, making Farid and some of the locals laugh. CHANDLER: "Alright, alright, enough making fun of the tourist. Let's go find some food. I'm starving!" FARID: "Perfect! I know just the place. But be prepared, it's not like Central Perk." CHANDLER: "As long as they don't serve camel, I think I'll be fine." They walk off together, continuing their adventure in the market. --courtesy of GPT4!

Tonight we passed a cafe serving Yemeni coffee, and I started talking about this scene from Friends. Part of what made the scene memorable was the hapless way Chandler delivers the line about “I’m going to Yemen!” Even the word “Yemen” itself works as part of this scene - it’s effective, punchy, and funny. Less than an hour later I see the news that Matthew Perry had passed away. At this point, I might say something about thoughts and prayers for his family - but these days in many circles it seems unfashionable to say that, while fashionable to call people out for saying it. I do believe in God and that prayers make a difference. And when I think of something that seems right for me to pray about regarding this tragedy, I will. But for now, as someone who has also experienced loss, I’ll just say my sympathy and empathy go to Mr. Perry’s family, friends, and fans who are in shock and sadness tonight. I count myself a fan as well. And I am sad. My brother and I thought Mr. Perry was very funny as Chandler. And I also enjoyed the movie 17 Again very much. He was a talented actor. He also had a lot of struggles in his life. But, from what I’ve read, he had turned the corner on a lot of those things. Hearing that he was able to do before he passed away that does not somehow doesn’t make this better, but somehow it helps. That’s all I can say for now. Thanks for reading.

Amazing how the world works. Yemen gave the world coffee. A lot of people don’t know that. There’s a reason it’s called arabica coffee. And the word mocha coffee comes from the port of mocha. Yemen was the world’s sole coffee exporter until the 1700s. The coffee bean is originally of Yemen. Many people don’t know this history. Some people think western Ethiopia, but there are specific beans and types of coffee that can only be grown in the highlands of Yemen. In 1450, Sufi monks in Yemen were the first to cultivate coffee plants and brew the drink we know today as coffee. It was used to stay up at night so as to recite the Quran and pray. God came from Teman Habakkuk 3:3 It’s a verse from the Old Testament. Teman in Hebrew is Yemen in Arabic.
@AbeTheFakeSage3 ай бұрын
The cultivation of coffee began sometime in the 15th century, and for many centuries to follow, the Yemen province of Arabia was the world's primary source of coffee. The demand for coffee in the Near East was very high. The beans leaving the Yemeni port of Mocha for trade with Alexandria and Constantinople were highly guarded. In fact, no fertile plants were allowed to leave the country. Despite the restrictions, Muslim pilgrims from across the globe during their pilgrimages to Mecca managed to smuggle coffee plants back to their homelands, and coffee crops soon took root in India. The first Middle Eastern coffee houses opened in the 14th century in present-day Yemen, Mecca, Damascus and Istanbul. Ruling on behalf of the Sultan of Cairo, the governor of Mecca banned coffee in 1511, saying, "In coffeehouses men and women meet and play violins and chess, and do other things contrary to our sacred laws." Then he banned coffee completely. The Sultan ultimately realized that the governor banned coffee because "it stimulated the common customer of coffee houses to discuss the wrongdoings of [the governor.]” So he repealed the ban, discovered the corruption of the governor and had him put to death.

Coffee also made its way into Europe Coffee also made its way into Europe around this time through the city of Venice, where fleets traded perfumes, teas, dyes and fabrics with Arabic merchants along the Spice Route. The beverage eventually gained popularity with the masses when street lemonade vendors began selling it in addition to cold beverages. Many European merchants grew accustomed to drinking coffee overseas and brought it back with them. In 1594, Pope Clement VIII blessed coffee that was brought to Italy. In 1600, a Muslim pilgrim from India named Baba Budan secretly stole seven coffee seeds and planted them in Southern India. Jacob, a Jewish immigrant, founded the first coffee house in Oxford, England, in 1637. The young thinkers of the university crowded in each night for this exotic beverage. Thus was launched the Royal Society. Three years later, the coffee house came to London. A Greek Egyptian named Pasqua Rossee, with funding from a merchant named Daniel Edwards, opened the Jamaica Coffee House around St. Michael's Church in Cornwall, near today's Thread Needle Street. Coffee houses provided opportunities for people to rediscover the art of conversation. It was also in the coffee houses where the "tip" was begun - to insure promptness. Famous coffee houses in this area included Jonathan's, The Cocoa Tree and Lloyd’s Coffee House on Tower Street, which eventually developed into the great insurance exchange Lloyd's of London. Bodega de Café, Venice's first coffee house, opened in 1640. France's original coffee house opened in 1644 in the port of Marseilles, which welcomed sailors from all over North Africa. The Dutch helped to spread coffee throughout the world, as well. When they took Ceylon from the Portuguese in 1656, they planted coffee there - and it grew very well. Exploring further, the Dutch moved into the East Indies, also a hospitable climate for growing coffee. By 1683, the armies of the Ottoman Empire had conquered all of Eastern Europe. Led by Kara Mustapha, 300,000 Turks laid siege on Vienna. Georg Kolschitzky, a Pole, disguised himself and infiltrated the Turkish army camp. He provided enough intelligence for the Austrians to defeat the Turks, and was offered a reward for his services. He asked only for the coffee sacks that the fleeing Turks had left behind - sacks that contained hundreds of pounds of green coffee. With this reward, he opened the first coffee house in Vienna. In the Dutch colony of Indonesia, the government claimed the land for coffee, and harvested the first crop in Java-man in 1690. The Dutch then brought coffee to America, opening the first coffee house in New York in 1697. Later that year, "Ye Coffee House" opened in Philadelphia. A Dutch merchant presented a coffee tree to King Louis XIV in 1713. The tree had been transported from Yemen to Java to Holland, then overland to Paris. The king planted the tree in the Jardin des Plantes.

Incase you're having a bad day, just remember Chandler spent $2100 and actually went to Yemen just to break up with Janice.

The fact that there was a plane going to a whole country (not a town or an airport) still gets me way more than the fact that Janice was at the gate without a ticket :)
@radiocremebrulee4431 Жыл бұрын
Pre 9/11, you could actually see people off at the gate in the US. But yes, your comment on the plane going to a whole country as opposed to a city like Aden or Sanaa is spot on! I cannot believe they messed up that part.
@perzonne6302 Жыл бұрын
@@radiocremebrulee4431If the plane is traveling to Yemen it's probably going to be Yemen Airlines or something like that
@radiocremebrulee4431 Жыл бұрын
@@perzonne6302 Right, but the fact that they don't point to a specific destination in Yemen is odd. It's like flying to New York and the announcement is "the flight for the US leaves in ten minutes". In light of Matthew Perry's demise this weekend, this clip actually feels like quite sad to watch now.
