Notice that Kathy and Monica look similar? Chandler unconsciously or perhaps even consciously was always interested in Monica but couldn't really jump to the next step seriously. Not that he didn't try. Remember in season 3 when he asked her if he was boyfriend material? He tried, he tried since season 1 when he proposed that they'd get together and have a baby if they were single at 40.

One of my favorite scenes is the one where Joey corners Chandler at the bar about being rude to Cathy back at the table while they are out to dinner. Joey says something like, "Even if you don't like her, you could at least pretend." Chandler gets very quiet and serious and says: "I am pretending." Matthew Perry then gives us a few seconds of one of his most heart-breaking performances when he "confesses" how he really feels about Cathy. The look on Chandler's face and the inflection in his voice when he is talking about her gives me chills to this day.

Yes and ignore the obvious love triangle your friend clearly states later on in this episode. The guy was screaming out that he loved his girlfriend. I blame him for them breaking up because he made Chandler subconsciously feel insecure when she did that sex scene in the play. Joey was always the guy who could get girls and Chandler was getting one of his most recent girls so he didn't think he'd be good enough for her when she met someone better than him. He gained trust issues until it was too late and now she was gone. I'm sorry I ranted about this, you're probably a good guy I'm just angry at how this relationship went down.
