My kids and I have nearly been hit by cars several times crossing at crosswalks here. I had a coworker get hit by a car while crossing at a cross walls and he was in a coma for a whole month. Please don't forget to watch for pedestrians crossing the road and also areas people get stuck walking like a long roads with no sidewalks. For those whom don't have a car we have to get around some how.

Motorists do not look for cyclists. They don’t. We get doored. We get crap thrown at us. Our bike lanes are often taken over by pedestrians and riding on the sidewalk is illegal. It’s actually safer to ride a bicycle IN the road than it is to ride on the side of the road- people will actively disregard anything or anyone on the side of the road. Riding through intersections is dangerous anywhere- motorists take right turns without looking for us, and if the light is red, god forbid we go through it to save our own lives. Not one motorist I know can tell me the laws regarding cyclists, and even police don’t have a clue.

Cities quit automatically putting in sidewalks when people quit walking everywhere, as if they were no longer needed. Even having them just on one side of the street is not enough. Where feasible, they could even have bike lanes that are not so close to traffic. I grew up in the 1950s in Colorado Springs and had to walk an exact mile to school. There were sidewalks every inch of the way. People used to have common sense around schools. Now, the only focus is getting to where they are going as quickly as possible WITH numerous distractions inside and outside the vehicle. Certainly kids going to and from school did get hit occasionally or they wouldn’t have spent the money for school zone signs and enforcement to prevent them.

I'd say he is the common denominator in all these situations which doesn't mean he is definitely to blame, but it certainly points to him being at least partially to blame. He should at least move over slightly or wear brighter or reflective clothes. Although The pedestrian does have the right of way generally, it is a good idea to try to be as visible as possible, and give the cars room.
