I also don't understand how Joey plans to make a G-sharp chord with that shape, unless he's playing it on 3 strings using A-shape, guess that could work. Still, not really a chord that a beginner should be going for unless the guitar is tuned down a half-step, bu then his teacher isn't helping him, he wants to start playing barre chords and truncated chords all over the neck, she won't even let him strum some chords, so effective is her method that when she gives him a try, he doesn't even know how to hold it!

The fact that Joey knew the G# chord would've gotten him pretty far for a beginner. It's a basic barre chord shape that can be moved up and down the fret board to play most basic and minor chords but it's quite challenging for beginners. Phoebe only really knows E, A, and D which are very basic chords that basically anyone can learn. If Joey was more persistent and actually kept learning, Phoebe would've ironically had a lot to learn from him!
