KZbin didn’t exist, streaming was an utter joke (does anyone here remember realmedia?) and DVD releases of seasons (or Blu-ray or digital) weren’t really a thing when they filmed this. I still have the first season of Malcolm in the Middle on DVD which came out in 2002, with a to be continued, and Fox gave up releasing the second, since syndication was so popular for it at the time. I bet that’s where they were, thinking of syndication, assuming that there would be no way the show would last long enough to end up on Nick at Nite or TV Land whenever 2020 did arrive.
