Damn, there is always a previous "inspiration" for everything! It blows my mind that Jaco Pastorius was the real creator of the underground theme, but the end result really sounds like a mix of the Friendship's and Weather Report's respective tracks, so I guess Koji Kondo was REALLY into Jazz Fusion in the late 1970s.

Steve Gadd played drums on both albums but not on the River People track, the plot thickens en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Gadd_discography EDIT: nevermind, Wikipedia was wrong (what a surprise), he only played in the first Friendship album (before they were a band), but there is definitely a connection between the two, as that album was in the same year of the weather report's one.

It’s interesting to think that even the underground theme, which we would’ve assumed was original, was actually inspired by this amazing song. Definitely gonna check out more of their stuff. I can’t help but imagine a cheesy 2D 70’s/80’s animated detective-esque Mario movie trailer where, along with this song playing, at the start of it you only see a black screen and then the faces of Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Daisy are illuminating with neon lights of their respected colors. Mario looks angry, Luigi is a bit passive, Peach is a touch frightened but still optimistic, and Daisy has a confident smirk on her face. They all do their own unique walk cycles and then you hear a narrator say: “These two plumbers have snaked their way down the wrong drain pipe.” As you actually see them wobbling and zig-zagging down the warp pipe. Suddenly you get a glimpse of the underworld which looks like a cramped, monster infested, grimier version of New York but only illuminated by the neon lights outside of the buildings. “To find their way back,” ‘I wanna go home...’ “Its gonna take two pros,” ‘Cheer up Peachy Pie. Us girls gotta stick together.’ “Two Bros,” ‘Here we goooo!!!’ ‘You can run Mario Bros. But ‘cha can’t hide from me!’ “To unclog this mess.” And then around there’s a bunch of different clips of fight scenes involving Charging Chucks, chase scenes of the gang running from chain chomps, Thwomps, and so on. You see brief clips of all the koopalings taunting Mario before they begin their battles and you even see Wendy calling in Lakitus and at one point carrying a conversation with Mario about something. It flips back and forth between Mario & Luigi to Peach & Daisy going around town, interrogating people about this place how they can get out of it. When it gets to 2:25 there’s ‘fan service-y’ clips sprinkled into the mix where Peach & Daisy are at the “dance” club all dressed in black and the shygirls (I know they’re not canon) show them up with their dancing. Of course Daisy takes this personally and so an odd dance off ensues in between the parts where Mario & Luigi kick some of the Koopalings’s back to world 2-2. “Welcome Mario and Luigi to...” * warp pipe sounds as the title card falls * * 8-bit bullet bill/Firework sfx plays as the title lights up* “The Underground. Coming soon to a theatre near you.”

So original and sweet jazz music. I'm from Cameroon 🇨🇲 and this sounds like our music. Manu Dibango was in this genre. Also sounds like Super Mario soundtrack 😂

Never heard this great song before. Feels like I had to delve deep into a cave to find it.

I feel so weird right now. A jazz favorite of mine inspired a classic video game motif and I didn't even know it. FYI I had never listened to any of Lee Ritenour's stuff prior to Earth Run which was released in 1986.

This music also reminds me of the Cave Dungeon theme from Super Mario 64. Ties in well.

Such a weird title name for a song that CLEARLY inspired the Super Mario Bros underground theme!

What I find interesting is that this song was only truly mimicked in the 1985 Super Mario Bros game, as far as the 3/4 waltz style. All subsequent versions have just been a straight 4/4 beat since Super Mario Bros 3. (Even the All-Stars SNES version of SMB's underground is just a rework of the original SMB 3 variant).
