One of the reasons I love you girls reactions and are my favorite would be that you have awareness of almost everything going on nearly every time something is happening, meaning you are invested and paying attention. But you also appreciate good dialogue, world building and character development. Too many channels just care about the big moments or fights and not the journey along the way. I always look forward to your reactions because I am excited to see how you two will fall in love with a show for its little things, not just the big things. Frieren is a show for people who appreciate the little things and get rewarded with some big ones now and then too.

@@SilverKnightXx like how kraft was a hero of an age before frieren, the sword might be for a specific prophecy to a threat in some other era
@zoabs87682 ай бұрын
@SilverKnightXx Yup, I think both can be true. You don't need to pull the sword to be a hero, you don't need to be destined, anyone can be a hero and Himmel is the greatest hero that has inspired humanity for 80 years after completing the mission. But I do think the true Calamity hasn't happened yet and/or the Demon King Isn't dead yet (I haven't read the manga so maybe this theory is dead already) but the sword along with a few other clues this season lead me to believe that's the case and in that case this will be Chekov's Sword for Stark to use in the future when he finally believes him to be the hero that he is.

I swear, in every other fantasy story, Himmel, or Stark, would have pulled the sword out, Confetti, Fanfares, Applause! But not here and that makes the message even more brilliant, you don't need symbols of status, it's your conviction that makes you a real hero! And for Stark, he would never consider himself as a hero, but when he saw that sword, he immediately thought of his brother, his real hero 🥲

My favorite part of that scene is the moment when they're leaving and Stark looks at the sword, then leaves without even trying to pull it out of the stone. Because Himmel killed the demon king, it's as if the fact that he couldn't draw the sword discredited the sword rather than him.

I'd say your idea is in line with most peoples thinking about Fern. She lost her parents at a very young age and was subsequently fostered by a rather old (corrupt) priest and then trained and taken in by a thousand year old female elf. Her experience with boys is pretty much nothing, and she probably didnt have any real teachings about hormones/sex/puberty/love from Heiter or Frieren. Stark was also orphaned at a fairly young age and then raised by a old warrior dwarf, who I doubt had such talks with -him-. So you have two people that have essentially been raised to fight monsters/demons since they were small children with little to no contact with the opposite sex, especially someone their own age. IF there are feelings, I highly doubt either one even realizes it at this point let alone would be able to act accordingly if they DID realize it. As for Frieren and Himmel. 1) she's an elf, so her sense of time heavily influences how she learns, feels, processes information and experiences. Plus her whole village was slain by demons and then she was taken in by a powerful mage that urged and taught her to subdue her magical power (and probably emotions, by extension). Then she died and was essentially alone for how long before Himmel, Heiter, and Eisen came along? Years? Decades? Centuries? It wasnt even until Himmel passed that she even began to realize that people she knew for such a relatively short time (to her) could impact her so greatly; that other people, humans specifically, dont have the same advantage of time that she does and live and act accordingly. At the time of their "mere 10 year" adventure I doubt she could have said she loved any of her party members in any particular way or at all. Sure she enjoyed their company, they had fun, they learned to trust each other, and they had a common goal. Shes learning a lot about the people she knew back then with the experiences and knowledge shes gaining now. Just like Stark learned in this episode that maybe his memories and views of past events and people may have had a context he didnt even realize at the time, Frieren is looking at her past adventure through an ever clearer new lense through the whole series. I think she's slowly learning that she DID love Himmel, and still does. As a hero, as a person, as a friend, and maybe even romantically. That maybe Himmel cared about her and maybe even loved her ,too. And Starks brother, oh man. We all have a lot to say about him and its pretty much 100% positive from everyone. I think the most important parts are he didnt have an inflated ego and that he loved his little brother more than his own life and he saw and believed in his potential to become a greater warrior than himself, even when no one else did. Now everywhere he goes when he meets a great/old warrior they also see his potential, just like his brother did, and feel compelled to pass on their knowledge to him. I really hope we later find out that he survived the demon attack and Stark gets to show he finally realized how much his big brother loved him and Stoltz gets to see what a great warrior and hero his little brother has become.

Updated list of German words in Frieren: *Aura* = aura *Auserlese* = selection, to carefully select something of the highest quality (in this case the largest amount of mana) *Äußerst* = most likely referring to the town's remote position (außen = at the outside) but "äußerst" is the wrong adjective to use if that's the case. "Äußerst" is generally used as a superlative as in "extremely, most, etc." *Bluterei* = may refer to the word "bluten" (bleeding). *Draht* = wire *Eisen* = iron *Ende* = the end *Eng* Road = tight, narrow *Erfassen* = to capture, to gather, to register, to comprehend (it's the name of Linie's imitation spell) *Ewig* the sage = eternal, forever *Fern* = far away, distant *Flamme* = flame *Frieren* = to freeze, to feel cold *Heiter* = cheerful, merry *Himmel* = heaven (can refer to the sky and heaven in a religious sense) *Kraft* = strength, power *Linie* = line *Lügner* = liar *Schwer* Mountains = heavy *Stark* = strong *Stoltz* = pride, proud - correct spelling would be *Stolz* *Qual* = agony, torture

i wonder why every reactors first thought when seeing that scene is "stark is gonna pull it?" i mean, when i was watching this episode for the first time that thought never even crossed my mind... i mean Stark is aloof, a strong loveable goofball, he doesn't have any ideas of grandeur or heroism, he doesn't have any big plans about going around killing big baddies to save the world, every single good deed he does it's because he feels like helping out and he is having fun while doing it, not because he wants to be memorable or never forgotten... plus he clearly doesn't see himself as anything close to a hero... after all, all he wants to do is have a crazy fun journey and then go back to his master and share stories with him.

Because its a popular trope my friend
@limini56562 ай бұрын
I wouldn't call him aloof, since he's so friendly and sociable. And why not try to pull it out for shits and giggles then? I think the sword just symbolizes the idea of a hero and how Himmel and his brother are heros but not in the way the sword symbolizes a *legendary hero*. so having stark pull the sword or attempt to pull the sword would mean a lot, especially with how he views himself and what it means to be a hero. So him not attempting also speaks to his low self esteem that gets explored later in the ep. And while he doesn't have any ambitions to be the greatest etc he does want to be a good warrior and hero in his own way. We meet him as the hero of a village and he continues to be a little hero (much like Himmel) while training diligently to pursue being a good warrior. So I wouldn't say that stark is without any ambition or curiosity that could tempt him to pull the sword

All the people talking about how the sword is just some rusty hunk of metal stuck in the ground seem to be forgetting the fact that it continually attracts monsters who are compelled to try and destroy it but can't because of the barrier so they just gather into a horde around the cave. It's definitely true that Himmel proved his heroic character by refusing to be deterred by his inability to draw the hero's sword but if the Demon King was alive for over a thousand years before Himmel and company killed him, it seems doubtful that he was 'the great calamity bent on destroying this world'. I'm sure he seemed like it to the people who were stuck living through his attacks on the human world but I wouldn't be surprised if it's eventually revealed that his constant attempts to conquer the world were his way of trying to protect it from the coming calamity.

@ It's because everything is so beautiful. In her memories, there are always smiling Himmels. This scene, more than any other in the 28 episodes, emphasizes this. At the same time, it's incredibly sad because it's a distant past memory of friends they'll never see again. The reason everyone cries is because they feel warmth and sadness at the same time. This emotion isn't caused by this scene alone. The little memories with Himmel depicted in episodes 1-11, Frieren's feelings for Himmel, Himmel's feelings for Frieren, the vivid and beautiful illustrations, the beautiful yet ephemeral music etc... When all of these elements come together, they shake our emotions. It's like being hit in the heart with a metal bat. Additionally, I think it's significant that this scene comes out of nowhere so suddenly. If you were suddenly hit in the head with a metal bat from behind, anyone would faint, right? I cry every time I watch this scene. For the same reason, I also love the final scene of episode 14.

I have realized something after rewatching Frieren via reactors. Some of the most notable (and pretty overpowered) characters in this anime have somewhat the ability of foresight/foretell the future. Flamme (yeah she's OP) *Flamme predicted Frieren will defeat the Demon King, and Frieren did. Heiter (spoiler at the end on why he's OP) *Heiter formerly said "maybe one of my children will become a mage". And Fern ended up one. *And latest one for me, during this episode Heiter said Hummel "can only be a fake hero" and Himmel did remain a fake hero even if his party defeated the Demon King. ❗❗❗SPOILER ALERT ❗❗❗ Heiter knows a spell that would allow them to survive for 2 months without any food/sustenance. ❗❗❗SPOILER END❗❗❗ As for Himmel, I don't exactly remember him predicting anything. But he did say Frieren is the strongest mage he's ever seen just from "gut feeling". The exact same way Frieren said she thinks Flamme is way stronger than her when they first met.

Serious question. Can you name anything to criticise in Frieren? I've seen a lot of "10/10" shows, but there's always some little things you could criticise. When Frieren took #1 spot on MAL's Top Anime list I started thinking about the pros and cons. I'm a huge FMA fanboy, so I had mixed feeling. To this day I can't find anything to criticise in this anime. I won't call it the best anime in history until it ends, because we've seen great stories crashing and burning, but if they keep this level, it won't be my favorite anime. It'll be my favorite story in all media formats.

Some pacing issues in the fourth ep and the magic exam arc and the first sein ep Some introductions of the characters in the magic exam arc fall a bit flat And personally a few of the jokes don't land but this is subjective And the frieren fight was cut a bit confusingly between the two ep The farewell of the last ep dragged a bit even tho they make a point to be quick with their goodbyes lol

Great discussion and reaction. For myself personally, sometimes this show is really actually too cute and sweet. I felt similar to Hunter X Hunter too, where with both shows, it was so wholesome at times, I had to stop watching a little. Like there was almost too much sincerity, cuteness, warmth, endearment. It can be almost an odd feeling, especially when a lot of other shows often use more conflict and drama, and neither approach is inherently better or worse, its more about shows knowing what they are, and embracing that. As for Fern, my interpretation is a bit similar. She is endearing because she projects a lot. I don't imagine when she was raised by a much older man, who was also a priest, in Heiter, that she had a lot of contact or experience with people who own age, so likely didn't get too much time to socialise with peers. She had a great and warm father like figure, and she probably did interact with some people from a near by town or location... Then a lot of her life was spent travelling with Frieren, who well... Frieren is Frieren, so I think Fern is going to be a little socially awkward. Often when people struggle with expressing themselves or talking about matters they may feel embarrassment or naivety over, its common to then project on to others. Which also takes on a bit of internal and external judgement. Like chastising others, for being inappropriate, if you feel internal repression over natural feelings, but struggling to express that. Fern is a surprisingly nuance and I think well realised character, that compliments Frieren and Stark a lot. All three are also obviously very cute, by themselves and together as well. Stark's backstory was sad and sweet. I am glad that his brother was actually a great older bro. Depending on the person, this show can be subversive at times, granted the father was a jerk, but yeah. I am glad that he had at least one positive influence in his younger life.
